  • It's A Boy! Just kidding! (Mi Casa): 2 years later and decided to check on this. Well, it looks like it is time to forget about these for another 5-10 years. Lots of ferrite, forest floor with a tinge of dark red fruits. A bit brooding and needs some time to mellow out, integrate and do its thing in bottle for a while. Good news is, I am fairly confident this is going to give me much pleasure long term. Bad news, it is in a spot where it just needs to be forgetten for a while. If I needed to score this today, it would be 94-95.

  • Stylistic '18 blind (The Sumoba compound): N: Dark blueberries minus any ripeness, and the scent of standing on a stone path on a drizzly day. Initially, almost quiet or muted, but thankfully opens up with time showing nice black earth, dark fruits (more red and black), and a nice brightness from wet stones.

P: Dark and bitter oak and damp wet earth, wet minerals. This has a damp characteristic or mustiness in a good way. The least ripe of the line up on the first go. With time though, this finally shows its goods. Black fruits that are giving yet so classy. Deep and intense without ever being heavy.

This is the person who may act timid, quiet and even awkward at first. But as they get comfortable, they really open up and they're just awesome to be around.

Reminds me when I tasted from a 750ml bottle a while back (this one for the blind is a half bottle) where it started showing its best glass on the last couple of glasses. That took HOURS before it started opening up, but this half bottle also took much less time to open up and unfortunately, it was almost gone by the time it was starting to show up. Least favorite of the blind lineup but to be fair, this was on the first go where it had no time to open up. 96+

  • With a little 1998 left over from the night before I decided to kill this 375 way too early. But, it did make for a fun side by side.

With 20 years of between them the classic terroir notes of Eisele vineyard are still unmistakable. I suspect the Pinaults will continue to raise the pricing till it's equal to Latour. This is first growth Napa and the prices will reflect that. Now the pricing is going to suck but the writing is on the wall to grab what you can of older vintages.

Stunning in structure. Ripe dark bramble, unsweetened dark chocolate, think 85% cacao. Anise, tobacco and wet gravel. All locked up behind pixelated fine tannins.

    Hold

  • Salon Focofi Paris walkabout and dinner, so no detailed tasting notes. Unlike in burgundy with Eugenie (former René Engel wines) the Latour team does a good job here, I guess they should stick to CabSav... TN: This was really nice and polished, precise, composed. Drink this beauty after 2033 to let some tertiary notes appear.
