Blind Dinner at Browntrout (Browntrout - Chicago, IL): Brought this to a blind dinner. When I opened this I was SO close to dumping it because I thought it was heat damaged. The nose was prickly, hot and had that disgusting stewed plum note that I usually associate with heat damaged wines. Figured I'd bring it along and give it a try after 4 hours of air. Glad I did as I thought the wine performed well. The nose was dusty and dark with earthy, smokey, dark-fruit fueled notes. The palate had nicely integrated cherry and floral tones. Doesn't have the rigid 1996 tannin structure - i think 1998 was guessed - but this showed very nicely.

Blind Dinner at Browntrout (Chicago, IL): Served blind. Very, very fresh nose with just a slight hint of brett (or animale) on it. The palate is very light and fresh. Pegged this as old world, cool climate wine -- Piedmont did not strike me immediately as this was a lot lighter than what I'd expect from a nebbiolo. After the reveal of Piedmont, I was thinking that this would be a less-ripe vintage from the early '00s. This was a real charmer.

Drank over the course of 10 hours. I really enjoyed this. The flavors were sweet, soft, refined and still youthful. Had some beautiful berry tones on the palate with a nice earthiness. The tannins were still there, but more sweet than drying. This just shows what a strong vintage 1996 is when a humble Barolo like this still clings to its youth.

Drank along side the 1997 and 1998 vintages from the same winery. This was faded in color and muted on the palate - definitely past its prime. Interestingly, the little fruit there was on the front of the palate was brighter and reddish - mostly cherry. It then quickly flattened out mid palate with nothing left at the end.
