Blind.Faith ‘Badass Barbera’ tasting. Wine 7 Tasted blind. The nose is riper in character than the rest of the wines - red cherry fruit dominates. Initially, this feels slightly unyielding on the palate, but really opens up with time in the glass. Lots of acidity with cherry fruit and a long spicy finish. Lovely balance and mouthfeel.

Very cool but also kinda weird, in the sense that this is a very big (15%!) and concentrated take on a grape that's not really either of those things, yet still produced in a very austere manner. I get the feeling that this wasn't supposed to be drunk for a number of years, but it also didn't really change with a day or two open. Same wonderful nose, same wall of tannin (for a barbera?), same moderate finish. I recognize the quality, but I almost wonder what the point here is.

Giacosa tasting at Knightsbridge Wine Shoppe (Chicago, IL): This is significantly more restrained than the 2017 Dolcetto just before. The nose is far less fruit-forward (although there is still ample red fruit), but also has a dose of dustiness. The palate is quite structural and shows impressive depth for a wine at this level.

Crimson color. Cherry and cranberry on the nose. Notes of red fruit and herb. Better with a bit of age but good now.

A tasty dinner wine, supple and easy. A nice pairing with a slow cook Ragu of short rubs.
