  • Verticale Musar (Restaurant al Sad, Choueir): Nez de vieux meuble patiné, cuir, fruits noirs mûrs et d'épices.
    Beaucoup de moelleux en bouche.

  • Musar with Serge Hochar: A mature, browning colour.
    The nose is mature, with polished oak furniture. After aeration, some raspberry and strawberry fruit become evident.
    The palate is notably mature, no doubt, and the attack reminds me of old wardrobe doors with nice, sweet, evolved fruit. But there's also a certain vibrancy in there. Some sweet, remarkably young feeling fruit comes along. There's a streak of really pure, fresh fruit in there. Remarkable wine. Very complex flavours.
    There's still enough structure to see it through a couple more decades.
    Serge called up Steven Spurrier and John Avery to help him describe it: Spurrier describes it as a "non-facelifted, non-botoxed fifty year old wine", while Avery reckons it reminds him of a madeira, without fortification. Hmmm ... In complexity, maybe, but I don't find any maderisation.

  • White Truffle Dinner (Toscana Restaurant, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Hong Kong): Sourced for me by Ralph Hochar. Decanted briefly before drinking but stood upright for 2 days before opening. Thinning red but not bricking in colour, white miniscus......hard to believe it's nearly 50 years old. Very sweet on the nose, light notes and distinct white peppercorns. Still very good structure on the palate, very sweet, great length. This evolved Lazurus-like in classic old Musar style and was still improving after 2 hours in the glass.........more fruit emerged and the sweetness diminished, with some lovely mushroom and then white chocolate notes emerging. And then it steadily got heavier and even more complex over time. Superb length. It stood up remarkably to the 1971 Grange and won 4 out of 5 votes for the flight.......to everyone's surprise and because, as Jason remarked, " this evolved through 4 great wines in one glass". It was the second-favoutite WOTN for three out of the five of us, which is remarkable given the wines it was up against.
