Pale ruby colour. Light and developing nose with raspberry, cranberry, red cherry, vanilla, red currants, charred wood, smoke and dried herbs. Medium taste of raspberry, red cherry, red currant, charred wood, smoke and dried herbs. Long and dry finish. High acidity. Light tannins. Medium body. A very good German Spätburgunder. Drink now or over the next couple of years. Goes well with duck, poultry, pork or veal.

Revisiting a 2018 Thörle Saulheimer vom Kalkstein tonight (originally opened last week during the Golden State Warriors final win of their season, then forgotten.). Thörle tends to taste big, meaning having a fullish body, and this Ortswein is no exception. They usually have lots of good material, as does the Kalkstein. It’s minerally, a hint of stems, no more, pure cherry fruit and a touch of soy and spice. It’s a good deal from Fass and a great deal at cellar door (€12,50 IIRC.)

Give this a good breather and maybe even a full day - it took some time to build some life. It does and nudges up against being something I'd really love if it had just a little more to give. It' has fruit and plenty of minerality and earthiness for balance but at least at this point in life it's not singing. Far reaching aromas - rich and sappy. Black cherries, leather, cocoa, cedar.

Acidity -driven red fruit in a very pleasant multilayered package. I really like this wine! One of the best value for money there is?
Razor sharp
