50mm cork enclosure. Bright gold/green in colour. Med(+) intensity on the nose. Apricots, honey, orange, grapefruit… Medium body, pronounced intensity on the palate. High acidity, wonderful balance and a finish lasting somewhere in the middle distance. Medium sweet. Not a dessert wine - different German wine regions have varying oechsle (phonetically: x-slee-er) requirements within the pradikat - but this was an absolute gem that just got better over the course of a few days.

Never could stand that fork ... (Mikhailgrad (Rego Park, Queens)): My bottle. Nose is herbal, peach, spices, lemon, pine - honey, white flowers. Racier than the Zilliken with lemons, herbs, spice, honey, light. Crisp. Finish is crystal clear with lemon, peach, spice and stones. The acid shows more on the finish, giving it great (but soft) energy and verve. These 97s are fascinating wines - they sometimes feel soft, verging on ripe, but their clarity, lightness and elegance are transfixing and heartbreaking. Such poise ... they should have sent a poet. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

In which Seth lost his fork. (Count's place, NY): AP #7. Another winner from Grunhaus. Just a fantastic bottle of Riesling, with gentle autumnal pine cone notes, richer citrus, green apple and other tree fruit, minerals, and developing smokiness all coming together. So polished on the palate, great balance, finishing long - absolutely outstanding.

Remarkably youthful and fresh, the least developed of the three Auslesen with a spectrum of fruit ranging from tarter citrus and pear flavours to riper peachy and melony notes, accented by fresh herbal, floral and forestal/pine notes. There's a wonderful purity and clarity to the flavours, bright acidity balancing the sweetness perfectly and a long, resonant finish.
