  • Opens with flowers, spicebox, cherry, tar, earth and a hint of leather. The wine is on the softer side which was an interesting foil to the 'Relentless' we had next to it. The palate was soft and easy, nicely balanced with moderate acidity, ripe red cherry fading to to a floral raspberry. Finish was shorter and a bit more 'clipped' than I like.
Overall a fine bottle and very enjoyable drink.

  • 1+ hr decant in med base @50F. COLOR- very murky with lots of condensates milking up the dark burgundy red slosh (I probably should have kept the decanter in a warmer clime.) NOSE- Meat, Rhubarb, and Hoisin in that order. A deep, meaty, stewed (brown sugar) nose, as this opens I'm thinking of the Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup broth I had there last year, a completely inimitable culinary experience here in the States (at least so far). The little bit of age in this bouquet (10 years now) gives this a quality and interest that would leave me happily occupied in an empty room for an hour without complaint. PALATE- Whoooweee! This is electric; medium bodied and hugely complex; tannins streamlined and embedded, like silken wisps of spider web caught in the flow of a stream; I know they are there, but they're only visible when the sunlight catches it in a brief glitter. Stewed strawberry flavors mix with Hoisin sauce, crushed mint leaves, and even flavors of old soy sauce with finely crushed black pepper and shaved dark chocolate on the smooth, long finish. I feel like this peaked probably about a year ago. This is on it's last plateau, expect a nice long decline from this point out. I really wanted to give this 93-points, but I think for my scale 92 is more honest given this is just barely hinting at "tired"; like the writing's on the wall. But I'm very excited by this wine - almost giddy in fact.
