Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.1 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 26 notes)

Tasted by french16 on 1/5/2010 & rated 88 points: Tasted Blind.

Barnyard on the nose, a touch of licorice (even though there's no oak), leather. Darker fruits on the palate than on the nose.
Not as good as the previous bottle. (149 views)
Tasted by winelovr2001 on 9/24/2009 & rated 88 points: Better the second day. Some nice
Red fruits, spices, and herbs. Not incredibly concentrated, but nice. (274 views)
Tasted by stubbie999 on 7/28/2009: A quick note from memory - lovely, early approachable Chinon, though still a baby. Understated but pure dark fruit, herby-earthy funk with a distinct tobacco leaf note on this night. Needs food and rewards having it with a meal. Great QPR. (354 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 6/19/2009: has improved greatly in the past 6 months. much of the old wood harshness has faded. beautiful cherries, bit of cab. f. funk, lovely texture. good finish. excellent value. (423 views)
Tasted by Dillo on 5/6/2009 & rated 89 points: Medium ruby color. Very aromatic nose and palate of floral, herbaceous, red cherry, smoke, black pepper, green pepper and saddle leather. This is just barely medium bodied, with bright acidity and a lucious, chewy, tongue coating tannic finish. Enjoyable wine and great QPR (488 views)
Tasted by Steve Jones on 3/14/2009 & rated 89 points: What a beautiful wine! Dark purple color, nice minty and fragrant nose. Flavors are supple and complex. The CF is not overpowering yet bold. The wine opened up rather quickly and supplemented tapas we enjoyed at a local restaurant. It is definitely a food wine. My wife and youngest daughter were very impressed with this also. Hints of the vegetal pepper were there but oh so subtle. The fruit is very complex. Well done and good QPR! (499 views)
Tasted by btennan1 on 12/2/2008 & rated 86 points: A : Red and Purple basic. Mild sediment
N : Vanilla; woodyness;spicyness; Currant and cranberries; Huge bitter sweet chocolate; Stargazer lilies.
T : Light fruits mostly plumb; Sharp and not real elegant
F : Short needs to decant. Opened up a little bit after a couple hours.
Overall : Not what I was expecting. Solidifies my opinion that Cab-Franc is only meant to be in a blend and not to stand alone. Of course I could be swayed to rethink if a better CF comes along.
V : 3/5 (577 views)
 Tasted by french16 on 11/23/2008 & rated 92 points: Decanted 30mn.
For under $20, it doesn't get any better. This is a tremendous Chinon.
Nose is what you ask for a cab franc: violet, blackberry, light bell pepper.
Med to full body, mild acidity, round but slightly grainy texture, I love the purity of the fruits with some licorice.
Great stuff and recommended.
Drink now over the next 3 years. (562 views)
Tasted by Epic Tale on 10/7/2008 & rated 86 points: aroma: slightly leathery, a little musty -- like sticking your nose into a book that you've just pulled from a library shelf; taste: initially not distinctive to my palate, but I enjoyed a slightly fermented, herbacious taste on the mid-palate with pronounced, balanced, pleasant tannins and, best of all, a long-lingering, peppery, chalky, cheek-sucking finish. Nice illustration of a wine in which the tannins really rock. I am new to cab francs so don't have much experience or comparison points. (614 views)
Tasted by jmull on 9/29/2008 & rated 89 points: Lovely stuff. Deep core of dark red fruit with really nice herbal funk that was somewhat reminiscent of pinot. Kind of looks like a more concentrated example of one of those, actually. Wide open for business right out of the bottle, but the tannin here suggests it may get a bit smoother with more time. Very good for the money. 89-90. (660 views)
Tasted by Jwobkk on 9/21/2008 & rated 90 points: Served this blind and my guests were sure this was a Burgundy. Medium red in color with a strong nose. Light on the palate initially but comes back with a big finish. Smokey and spicy in flavor and plenty of fruit to chew on. Very intriguing wine. This could work great with red sauce pasta. I think I will get more. (672 views)

Tasted by winelovr2001 on 6/25/2008 & rated 88 points: Distinctively French in style, showing its earthiness from the get-go. Nice fruit and great cab franc pencil lead character. (850 views)
Tasted by PSirah Tampa on 6/21/2008 & rated 91 points: This is a wonderful Cab Franc for a challenging vintage! Showing a powerful nose the initial red fruit and tobacco flavors transcend to an earthy and leathery finish. And what a nice long finish it was! This wine is a great buy. (859 views)
Tasted by jtabor on 6/19/2008 & rated 85 points: Color: Ruby. Nose: Multiple different things going on. Dark berries + distinct fermented dairy smell, maybe yogurt + a bit of green veggie. Flavor: I'd give it a 5/10 on the intensity of the flavors. Well put together, nothing is off-balance. Some veggies up front on the tongue. Some tannic gripping of the mid-back tongue. Another medium-mild veggie pulse at the back of the tongue. Some heat at the finish which decays into nice throat warmth. Nothing wrong with this wine, but at 17 you can do way better. (945 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 6/11/2008: Wow, this has really lost its cheery facade over the past 5 months. Now, the fruit is very much in the background. Aromas and flavors of oregano, camphor, and licorice are dominant, and the acidity is on the shrill side before it settles down. Either this has entered a closed phase (highly likely) or the fruit has gone south at an alarming rate. Whatever the explanation, it is less enjoyable now than it was earlier in the year. (954 views)

Tasted by Zinny on 5/18/2008 & rated 87 points: Very nice for the price - the 87 given here is a real one - not the kind sometimes given, for example, to undrinkable Australian Shiraz.

Not terribly complex - rather fruit driven for a Chinon wine. Nose of blackberries and violets. On the palate - rather balanced earth/must and bright red fruit. Longish on the finish. Some elements - like armpits and barnyard - are a little off-putting for me. I really enjoyed this served slightly chilled on a sweltering evening. (1017 views)
Tasted by karsten on 5/12/2008 & rated 85 points: nose: intriguing sour aspects underneath a sweet, fruity nose
mouth: tannic in an unbalanced way, however tasted near the end of a flight of Loire's and palatte was most likely dulled (755 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 3/29/2008 & rated 87 points: Wine Exchange - The Loire: Nice, bright nose; Consistent palatte; Very fresh; Bright (1168 views)
Tasted by tcfishler on 3/29/2008 & rated 87 points: Loire (Wine Exchange (Orange, CA)): Fairly saturated red. Wet tobacco dominates, but the fruit in the background is sweet and ripe. Crunchy yet refined; nice down-the-middle hit here for Baudry's little wine. (1233 views)
Tasted by robs_r on 3/26/2008: Short impressions: Quite ripe for a Loire Red but fresh and structured, red fruit mixed with some herbs (nothing unripe or green here), medium bodied, fine acidity, very "moreish", long and clean finish. After some time, some tannins show up. Excellent. Drink or hold. (1136 views)
Tasted by slaton on 3/1/2008 & rated 90 points: Opened this last night and found it sort of simple and fruity, not particularly structured or nuanced, though certainly tasty. I saved half the bottle hoping for some development and was not disappointed. Tonight i'm greeted by a smile inducing nose of plum, tobacco, smoke, and black pepper. The palate is pleasingly savory with flavors of plum and black cherry, grilled meat, and some chewy, but very approachable tannin. Loads of umami here, with medium(-) acid. Finishes with mostly vegetal flavors and black pepper, reasonable length. Very good value, but given the positive development overnight i'm inclined to give these a year or two in the cellar.  Tasted by Anonymous on 1/27/2008: Medium red/purple and translucent. A $50 nose on a $16 wine-black raspberry, mint, flowers. It turns in a more herbal direction after open for several hours. Much more complexity than deserved for the price! Medium weight, vibrant fruit set off by soil tones, and the perfect amount of acidity giving liveliness and lift without any tartness. This is so bright and refreshing that it just brings a smile to my face. (1289 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 1/5/2008: Some Loire and Rhone for a Rainy Winter Day (San Francisco Bay Area): Clear medium red. Typical aromas of dill and fresh cut dark flowers. Very bright raspberry fruit and crisp acidity. Light to medium body and persistent finish. This is lovely and much finer and less dense than many '05 Loire wines. I will drink this on the early side to enjoy the fruit before it fades and the herbaceousness becomes more prominent. Great value. (1403 views)

Bernard Baudry is one of the newer stars of the Chinon scene. A graduate of the Lycée de Beaune, Baudry created his 25-hectare estate out of family parcels and purchased land. He quickly rose to prominence in the appellation for precise, textured Chinon. Baudry is now assisted by his son Matthieu. We work with four estates that produce Chinon (not to mention the numerous other of our estates that produce different appellations for Loire Valley Cabernet Franc). Each of these Chinon has a separate identity defined by the winemaker’s style. Baudry’s style exemplifies rich, precise fruit picked at perfect ripeness levels and vinified cleanly using state-of-the-art equipment.
