Halfway Bandol and Barossa, this Tuscan Syrah is both supple and rustic. Brambly fruit, peppery spice, soft tannines, good length and typicité and no noticeable heat. Simply an excellent Syrah.

PHMG WAG: Syrahs from around the World (The Lyon's Tree House): From someone who has an idiosyncratic distaste for Italian acidity if the vintage is not ripe: well, surprise! A very nice aged Syrah from a place we don't think of for this varietal. Some nice leather, herb, and earth notes to the mixed berry fruit. Modest oak and meat tinges are there too. On plateau, the tannins are resolved/ smooth. Very nice the next day too. Hit it!

PNP last night and much closer to what I would have hoped for ......solid, earthy, still quite dark with smoke, ash and solid fruit to pare with the structure...excellent

(FONTODI Syrah Case Via) Syrah Dear Friends, This wine is seriously impressive and it's one of the better Syrah-based wines I've tried this year - it's not surprising the 2003 did so well. Unlike Sangiovese, the Syrah planted in this area of Tuscany actually benefits from the warm vintages (Syrah loves to soak up the heating degree days) and 2003 was the perfect situation for the Case Via to shine. Maybe it was an anomaly but the 2003 has far more natural extract than is typical of this wine but it still retains its harmonious sense of the Golden Zone near Panzano. Not easy to come by, I had to scrape and claw to get a few cases but here they are directly from the source with perfect provenance: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a wine that will go head to head with the major Syrah-based wine of the world and leave many of them in the dust (for less of an investment than top Cote Rotie or Hermitage): 2003 Fontodi Syrah Case Via(Veronelli 3/3) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy6299
