  • Friday at the strand (Strand Cellars, Croydon): "Served blind.
Funky initially, slightly meaty, plenty of sweet spice, slightly baked fruits' blackberry and plums. Medium plus acidity feels adjusted, huge chewy tannins are drying and close down the palate. Bolshy
I got as far as a warm vintage New Zealand Pinot noir"

  • {screwcap, 13.5%} Minty nose initially, then cured meats dominate. Flavours also add liqueured strawberries; the tannins are mild and dusty, it has balanced acid and a warmish finish. Dry, medium-weight pinot with some classic Martinborough richness, quite enticing and enjoyable, but lacks true complexity. At peak. Look to the Reserve for the top shelf I guess, but at a price.

  • {screwcap, 13.5%} Wonderfully developing Martinborough pinot. All dark-hued cherry fruit with meaty, gamey overtones; earth, compost. Gosh, this is beautiful. Tannins are low/medium; acidity medium also. It's soundly medium-bodied, and has a medium/long finish of interest and some complexity. Couldn't be anything but pinot, not a new-world caricature; this is very impressive, and stood up to a Felton Block 3 that following it (albeit in a different style). On this showing, ought to continue to develop for another 5-8 years easily.

  • Delightful wine. Beautiful nose with cherry and berry fruit and plenty of savoury complexity. Great structure with silky tannin, balanced acid and long finish. Again, great blend of primary fruit, and savoury, meaty, forest floor elements. Just as delicious as the 2007, but a more subtle and balanced wine.

  • 8/10 - Ready to drink. Alcohol and tannins no longer detracting from the wine and a smooth NZ pinot comes through. Cherries and chocolate come through. Pity the wine only comes into being with my very last bottle.
