  • Assessing 2021 Burgundy-La Paulée de Los Angeles Grand Tasting (Fairmont Miramar, Santa Monica): Yellow. Waxy pear fruit. Medium weight. Nice sweetness, lots of soil, excellent acidity, reasonably succulent.

  • Brief impressions. The nose here was quite off (reminding me of a mediocre Chasselas.a bit better on the palate, cleaner but with a flavor profile I don’t like. Not a winner.

  • Tasted at the estate. Fruit of apricot, rather ripe all in all, and candid pear, almonds and tangerine peel. Restrained mineral notes. Buttery taste on the palate with sharp acidity resulting in an off-balance structure.

  • light gold with lime tinge, on opening the nose was almost tropical- gradually settling after a couple of hours into a profile akin to a fine Mosel Riesling- pear, a bit of peach, creamy limes, hints of pungent grass and a lovely waterfall of honeysuckle, on the palate the concentration at the core is massive and yet the wine remains overall quite deft and taut, hints of blood orange, grass, cream and coffee grinds tell the tale of a palate that promises to expand to dreamlike proportions in time- but for now on the palate this is focused, elegant and streamlined with mineral, racy lime and lemon notes leading into a fine long closed finish, after 6 hours of air finally a blaring burnt butter and cream note comes out, but still the core of fruit remains primary and tight, this for me is one of the greatest wines in the world; with so many facets to its personality, and each expressed in varying degrees across the vintages- it really takes a good 20 years of tasting experience to appreciate the breadth of moods and emotions with which Drouhin's Beaune Clos des Mouches tells its story, this is a power vintage like 2009 and 2020- and yet it has a tantalizing tension and carefully restrained opulence that make it most singular, an utterly fascinating vintage- and one I think will need 3-5 years in the cellar to begin to fully emerge.
