1989 Piedmont Retrospective (Cinghiale, Baltimore): Relatively straightforward nose displaying subtle red fruit, tar, iron and earth. Good concentration, subtle cherry fruit, good acidity and mineral and a medium long finish. It is surprisingly tannic, perhaps the most tannic wine of the flight.

Dinner with 1985 Focus (Nopa Restaurant, San Francisco): Fairly deep for Nebbiolo of this age. Leafy scents. Rich and harmonious, even a bit chocolatey. Little in the way of secondary development. This still has a long way to go to achieve maturity and reach the apogee of complexity.

Moderately tannic, sour cherry with a bit of secondary flavors. Not a stunning discovery, but very enjoyable.
