I’m not a Syrah expert by any means, but I just think the Syrahs from Down Under taste better to me. They’re a bit darker, subtle (never a known trait from Napa), but still lighter, than the Syrahs from Napa, including this one. Yes, it was young, so it was fresh, but I decanted it for 2 hours, and drank it over the next 2 hours (with minimal change).
Overall, it was Dry, and medium-bodied, typical New World Syrah. And typical of a Napa Syrah profile it had lots of pepper, blueberry, and blackberry. And a touch on the backend of tobacco, olive, and rosemary.
To be fair, I really need to end this note with some clarification… I’m no Syrah expert, so don’t read too much into my notes (on any of my Syrah tastings.! 😳

decanted for 1.5 hours. dark blue and black fruits with a smokey caramel or hint of vanilla coffee that I could not figure out. Paired nicely with smoked pork tenderloin.

California Syrah isn’t always my thing, but I have to say Truchard has a wonderful wine here. Theres such purity and fullness to the fruit on this wine, but never over the top. Alcohol is in check and while you won’t mistake it for the northern rhone, it’s not going to offend those who scoff at anything but the birthplace of Syrah. I’m really enjoying this wine and its varietal accuracy is spot on. Nicely made.
