  • From a recent auction "mystery pack" of well-stored Herb Farm collection wines.
Saw this bottle at auction for cheap, so had to bid on it, as I last had a bottle of this in 2011. I scored this 88 back then and will again score this as 88, as it was still a decent drink, with good Chianti character and well-balanced. Very good food wine and has held up well since my last taste 12 years ago.

  • Funny thing about Chiantis (and maybe most wines for that matter, lol) - some reviewer comes out with a 90+++ score ("and will age for 10-25 years"), the industry hypes the "heck" out of it, it flies off the shelves, and everyone drinks it with in the next 48-72 hours ("Hey, look at what I found - I bought this wine last week and lost track of it, lets drink it tonight"). Sadly this was one of "those" and I drank my fair share within the 72-96 hour time frame (hey - I have a cellar for Pete's sake!!). But unlike many of "those" I also put down a case and am now getting around to re-discovering it. And what an "it" it has become! Fabulous. Sure - I like a cherry berry fresh Chianti like the rest of you but given time this wine has evolved into something special. Cherry? Sure, but more subtle, greater depth, "suave" even (that's not a term I think I have ever used in my almost 3000 reviews...), gentle integrated tannins, round mouth feel, long smooth finish. Wonderful. I wish I had two cases. For those of you keeping score, it didn't last the meal...

  • Corked. However, after submerging a loosely crinkled 1 square foot piece of chlorine-free Premium Saran Wrap in the wine and waiting for two hours, the mustiness completely resolved and the wine became perfectly enjoyable.

  • Allowed to breathe in glass 1 hour. Clear deep dark garnet color. Lovely notes of black cherries, blackberries, violets, leather, dark baking spices, stony soil. Fruit was stewed at first but freshened nicely with air. Full body with firm tannic grip and bracing acidity in classic Italian style. Could easily masquerade as cabernet or merlot.

  • Lovely mature cherry fruit, the tannins found in its youth have fully resolved after 15 years leaving a fragrant balanced wine. Very nice.
