  • Mainly Sangiovese (80-95%) with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Macerated with the skins for 14 days. Fermented in barriques (1st, 2nd and 3rd use), 10 yo botti casks and cement vats. Aged for 15 months in French barriques and tonneaux of 1st, 2nd and 3rd use and in 10 yo botti casks, and a further 6 months in bottles before release. Annual production 50,000 bottles.

Dark, almost completely opaque dark cherry color with quite aged, mahogany rims. Somewhat reticent and a bit sweet nose with aromas of slightly wizened dark plums, some dried cherries, a little dusty earth and something sweet but industrial and rubbery. To one attendee of this tasting there was a highly disagreeable, extremely off-putting note, but no-one else noticed anything; probably something to do with genetics and ability to actually sense some compounds other people can't? This had nothing to do with volatility or TCA, however. To this one person this note rendered the wine completely undrinkable, but other people found the wine quite pleasurable with ripe, succulent flavors of sour cherry, some toasted spice and a hint of pepper. The wine had full body, rather low acidity and quite prominent, still very grippy tannins. The wine finishes with a rich but very dry aftertaste with medium-long flavors of sour cherry, peppery spice and some crowberry. The tannins become even more prominent in the aftertaste.

The wine was enjoyable and nicely matured, but also quite underwhelming; not just because it was next to the infinitely attractive vintage 1997, but also it seemed to be rather one-dimensional and dull. Perhaps there was something wrong with the wine, stripping it of some of its complexity, but only one of us could actually notice anything wrong? Or then the wine was just getting past its peak and started to lose some of its complexity and intensity? Whatever the case was, this was a nice, classy and classic aged Tuscan, but nothing truly spectacular.

  • Wow...what a wonderful surprise. I pulled the cork on this at work today...the cork was about 1/3 saturated but the wine was just magnificent. With notes of figs, fresh tilled earth, and funk this wine was firing on ALL cylinders today. With bright flavors of sour cherry, bakers chocolate, and Kalamata olive firmly supported by soft and supple tannins emerging from this lovely wine. It was still a bright ruby in the center with light bricking around the edges of the glass. An absolutely outstanding wine…that had impeccable storage for a small wine store.
