Northern Rhone theme at Empire: In contrast to the Cornas this had a much more vibrant colour. Some VA and a prominent alcoholic note on the nose. Had the power of Hermitage but wasn't quite in balance for me, the acidity and tannins reminded me of Nebbiolo that someone else also pointed out. As usual with Chapoutier a more international style and the least northern Rhone of the flight.

Surprised me. Was expecting it to be faded and flat, but turned out to still have a lot of fruit and flavor in it. Color was slightly faded and rustic but overall very impressive. Decanted for 3 hours before tasting.

Tasted blind. Tart plum, strawberry, a bit herbal, quite smoky, with a hit of bretty sourness and funk. Quite mature and silky. THinking Rhone but incorrectly guessed southern, upon reveal this really does smell like other old Sizeranne, damn.

Tasted blind. Ripe nose of coffee, cranberries, and cocoa. Pinot Noir? Earthy palate with some pleasant funk. Lighter in body with saturating flavor. This has (comparatively) the best acidity.

Fully mature now and drinking nicely, though a bit on the lighter side. Started off with a little horsey funk, but that receded and left a sweet, olive infused, smokey palate. Drink up.

(M. Chapoutier Hermitage La Sizeranne) Earthy red fruit, horehound nose; tart red fruit, iron, cherry and raspberry palate with depth; medium-plus finish
