Auswine - 90s and earlier tasting: Blind. Spice, lemon, waxy and nutty with some floral and earthy notes as well - very nicely complex nose. Good length and intensity on the palate, there is still good brightness to the fruit. Improved further in the glass, with extra lift and character. Excellent stuff.

NobleRottersSydney - 20th Anniversary - 'Wow!' wines (Alio's, Surry Hills): {cork, 13.1%} Proudly wearing Murray Tyrrell’s quirky nomenclature ["Pinot-Chardonnay"], these examples [+87, 84 vintages] produce an interesting verdict on the aging ability of this father of Australian chardonnay. This 1992 is in great shape, mid lemon-gold in colour, with aromas of honey and peaches. The palate is dry, despite the richly aging fruits of nuts and figs, with some warm minerality. The flavours run the length of the palate, combining for a decent length finish. Oak has softened out to a sort of gentle woodspice note; interestingly the wine doesn’t taste a million miles from the Vat 1 semillon of the same age. The Hunter terroir trumps winemaking, at least in this vintage. No need to hold this wine longer, but feels like it will keep for a while yet.

NobleRottersSydney - Lots of birthdays this year (Lucio's, Paddington): Still only a mid straw in colour, the nose offers secondary-development aromas of melon and peach with cedary oak. On the palate there are soft spicy oak nuances, together with plenty of acid. Attractive length of finish, although a picker of nits might note that the back palate has faded away. Overall, a lovely wine, just starting to show that it’s reaching the end of its peak and will probably start the decline soon.

NobleRottersSydney - Partner's Dinner (Tetsuya's, Kent St, Sydney): Deep straw-pale yellow. Strong buttery and cashew aromas dominate the nose, but the palate (straight chardonnay, despite the idiosyncratic name) is redolent of melon and grapefruit, with a dash of well balanced oak, which brings out the smoky qualities in the fish. Displays an attractive acid cut with an even dry finish, and although drinking beautifully now, has many years left ahead of it. Quite delicious - one of the few semi-affordable Oz chardonnays which ages well and actually goes with food.
