  • Pretty fascinating wine with some Sauvignon and some Savennieres qualities. Full, earthy and incredible acidity for a 2006 French white. An interesting oddity worth seeking out.

  • Gosh, I have no good explanation for why this bottle should be so awesome and the last bottle so boring. But there you have it. This one was everything my last one wasn't, piercing, acute, crunchy, as vivid in its romorantin flavors as anything I've ever seen yet, and with its density and lusciousness not taking anything away from its purity and freshness. Reminds me somewhat of those stellar 2000s I enjoyed a few years ago before they succumbed to premox but this one is showing more youthfully.

  • This would normally be way too soon to open a Marionnet Provignage but unfortunately prior vintages have succumbed to premature oxidation. (Can't imagine the agglomerate cork in this bottle is going to help matters any on that front, either....) Anyway, this is very pretty stuff with rich, pure fruit, kind of like sauvignon blanc but fleshier, plumper, and less grassy, and also creamier and less angular in texture than some other vintages have been. It doesn't show much depth beyond that but the thing about this wine was that they tended to open up after a few days being open, so maybe the leftovers will be more interesting. Unfortunately I'm afraid that bottle age is what's really in order for this wine to show what it's got, and there's still a question mark whether it can handle that.

  • Bastille Day at Chateauneuf-du-Joe's. (Dougherty's): As luck would have it, Coad also brought a bottle of Marionnet (geeks tend to think alike) and the newer version showed brilliantly. It's piercing, delineated, lengthy on the palate with laser-like focus. Oyster shell minerality dominates with quince, green apple, green almonds and a touch of herb. Just a wonderfully vivid wine. A-.
