  • By coincidence I recently read William Kelley's essay 'Things Fall Apart' (https://wfkelley.com/2016/12/15/things-fall-apart/), and his words struck me as rather apt for this wine:

"After a decade in bottle, the mid-palate amplitude that extreme ripeness, new oak and a variety of cellar practices can bring begins to dissipate; an initially ‘pumped up’ wine deflates as the alcohol takes over, not only bringing heat on the finish but also denuding the wine of texture. An impression of heaviness sets in. Purity and focus on the palate diminish leading to a certain ‘soupiness’. (It’s not—with apologies to Yeats—that things fall apart; rather, the centre cannot hold)."

This wine is still quite drinkable, and its satiny texture and sweet fruit (candied strawberries and blue fruits as described below is an apt descriptor) may even make it appealing for uncritical wine-cocktail quaffing. But to my palate, and I'm sure that of most CT users, the near-absence of perceptible acidity, the apparent residual sugar, and the cloying mouthfeel (albeit with some not wholly resolved dusty tannins providing a modicum of texture) mean that this wine is now well over the hill.

  • This wine was a wonderful surprise, a bit past when I would have normally drank it but it was great from the first sip to the last.

  • Dang-waited too long on this one. While not oxidized or fruitless, there was an overwhelming VA on the nose. Surprisingly youthful on the palate, it was tough to like.

  • Pretty decent wine, but it fell short of what I was expecting. While this wine usually seems like it needs a few years to be enjoyable, this seems like it has quickly passed through its peak and is on the downhill. Still very good, but a little disjointed and never really meshed together over the evening. Showed candied strawberry, dark blue fruits, and not much else. I've certainly enjoyed this in the past, and perhaps this was a less-than-perfect bottle. (PE: 89)
