Decanted 1 hour before dinner. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with a little Petite Verdot. I've previously had the 1988 and 1990 Laterals. Very solid cork. Lightly sedimented. From the excellent 2001 vintage. Clear crimson color without any bricking. Fresh fruity nose. Notes of berries, red licorice and currants. Soft and very approachable tannins. In a very nice spot at 20 years old. Lacking a little length on the finish. 92 points

This was a stronger bottle than my last. This could easily pass for a barely mature Bordeaux variety wine of much higher dollar. Quite dense showing with expression just into maturity. Impressive. Would love to know where this fruit came from and why it was just listed as California.

An odd beast of a wine. It's about a third each of Merlot/CabS/CabF with a splash of Petit Verdot. The appellation only lists California though. This is still quite fleshy and dark. In look and feel. Strong notes of chocolate. A bit soft and blocky. It's an ok drink but just that. With all this fruit you have to imagine it's got more years to burn but will it become anything more interesting. Maybe it plays better younger.

Don't dispare if you still have a bottle of this vintage; it was still very, very good. The color was a deep burgundy. Was still fragrant and fruit forward and great flavors. Lucky for us we still have one more of this vintage which we will enjoy soon.

Decanted with little sediment. Maroon-crimson. Big blueberry muffin, vanilla, charcoal, smell of an oil derrick or car parts, roasted meat.
Great mouthfeel. Super full and rich. Soft tannins.
Very drinkable.
