  • Understated nose with soft baked strawberry and spice. A lovely soft palate texture with resolved tannins and gentle secondary flavors of baked strawberry, balsamic herbs and white pepper, smoky pork parts, and subtle sous-bois. Fully mature and entirely delicious, I particularly appreciate the soft weight and palate presence here, for a ripe vintage and a Rhone wine it's achieved a surprising delicacy with age.

  • Lovely, black cherry and raspberry, herby/wild grass, campfire. Round texture but with good acid backbone, what a fun wine. B++

  • I'm not familiar with Brézème, but I like this bottle. A few cork bits; otherwise fine. Poured out a third of the bottle on Day 1: dark but clear red. A bit medicinal on opening, this changes to a cool minty tinge to the deep and subtle fruit, which is both refreshing and satisfying. Followed over three nights, and better each evening. Beautifully aged; and worth savoring slowly. Very interesting on its own, terrific with a hearty winter soup of chicken, mushrooms, vegetables, and wild rice, as also with tofu and sautéed veggies over rice, as also with flavorful cheese. A winner. I see it was auctioned at one point for US$11.46; sorry I missed that!

  • Very close to resolved and recognizable as Brézème. I think I may have expected a little more either intensity or complexity given other experiences with other vintages. I love the shape and feel of these wines even if this particular bottle didn't hit the highs they are capable of. I have one more bottle, I think I'll give it another couple of years to see what happens.

Rockss and Fruit

  • By Lyle Fass

(Eric Texier "Domaine de Pergault" Brezeme) Having not tasted this since barrel in February of this year, where Eric boldy stated it was the best Pergault he has ever made. I thought so then and I think so now. The nose was high-toned and floral with violets, cherries and other dark ripe berry fruit. The palate was so delicate. So finesse driven. As opposed to say the 2006 Gonon Sy. Joseph which is a brute and power driven the Texier floats on your palate yet has vivid Syrah flavors. There are velvety tannins, and amazingly pure fruit with that great Brezeme acidity. A great Syrah and something that I can see developing nicely over the next 10 years.
