Terroir-istes International - Christmas Party (post Rioja Tasting) (Savage Wines, Cape Town): A deep, intense nose that reveals umami note, marmite, graphite, pencil shavings and dark chocolate. The entry is sweet and thick on this big, punchy muscular wine. Ripe and rich (typical of 2006?), the mid-palate is toasty, with dark fruits blackberry, nastergaal, warm gravel and coffee grinds. Everything seems to happen on the front palate; there is excellent concentration with plenty of spice and a little soy or balsamic. An immense wine, it felt a little faceless and over the top. Slightly drying on the finish, it clearly sets out to impress, but for me a little too much especially given the warmer vintage.

A big wine (and a heavy bottle to go with it!) that is approaching its drinking window. I am pleased that I did not open this bottle as it would have been an absolute brute.
Dark plums, some violet and mocha on the nose, followed by a concentrated body that had oak whacking you on the head and by the time you recover your consciousness, you can try to detect a dry finish with good minerals. A bit of one trick wonder but a nice trick all the same.
Drink now or 6+ years.

Finally, it is calming down after an overly exuberant adolescence. Still too oaky and fruity for my tastes but others liked it much better and I could appreciate the raw power and intensity better now than in the past. With the right meat, it works.

(Bodega Numanthia Termanthia, Toro) OK, this is a little expensive, but man, is it good! The inky, dark-purple color and stained tears prepare you for the power to come: gobs of fruit and oak in a conspicuosly New World style. Rich, full, and viscous, the wine leads with black cherry—a classic marker for Tempranillo, known as Tinta de Toro in the Toro region, on the Duero River between Rioja and the Portuguese border. The palate features buckets of blueberry and plum, followed by waves of ground pepper and smoky bacon. This is the middle tier of Bodega Numanthia's range, but I can't imagine more concentration or length being coaxed out of any grapes. It would be excellent with a thick steak or blue-veined cheeses. Hot Picks

Sweet, full bodied and once again a pleasure to drink.
Can surely last longer but it is at a nice spot now with oak having receded.
