Sommelier Journal

(Bodega Numanthia Termanthia, Toro) OK, this is a little expensive, but man, is it good! The inky, dark-purple color and stained tears prepare you for the power to come: gobs of fruit and oak in a conspicuosly New World style. Rich, full, and viscous, the wine leads with black cherry—a classic marker for Tempranillo, known as Tinta de Toro in the Toro region, on the Duero River between Rioja and the Portuguese border. The palate features buckets of blueberry and plum, followed by waves of ground pepper and smoky bacon. This is the middle tier of Bodega Numanthia's range, but I can't imagine more concentration or length being coaxed out of any grapes. It would be excellent with a thick steak or blue-veined cheeses.
