Community Tasting Notes (24) Avg Score: 90.8 points

  • Medium to dark gold
Aromatics medium +. Pleasantly oxidized notes of caramel, dark honey, macerated apples and orange peel. No new oak
Palate has medium body. Acid medium +. No phenolics. Alcohol medium. Intense minerality, dried apricots, sweet bruised apples.
    Finish has medium length. Balanced
I really enjoyed this. Balance between aging/oxidation and the acid. Oxidation is likely going to detract if held any longer though

  • Double blind tasting
    Beautiful medium/dark gold color
Medium/ medium plus aromas - mild oxidative notes over a caramel apple background with hints of wet wool and honey and distinct saline minerality
Medium plus bodied with firm linear mouthfeel - some bruised apple but really its the rocky/ saline character that dominates here
Medium plus acidity and medium alcohol - no noted phenolics
Wasn't sure if this wine was intentionally oxidized at production or was a well made wine with some age - I have a hard time with this usually
I went with a Jura Savagnin but should have picked up on the CB aromas despite the oxidative qualities
Really distinctive wine and drinking well now as further time may give more overwhelming oxidative qualities

  • Still young(ish)- getting more oxidized notes which make this an interesting drink. Caramel, lanolin, bruised red apple, some woody elements in the nose. In the mouth, off dry sweetness, similar to the nose in flavor with an aggressive almost tannic acid bite on the finish.

  • Intense. Drank at close to room temp. Slow ox for 2hrs. Wine is quite tight initially, opens up to a great wine. Aromas of acacia honey, fresh apple, passion fruit, fennel pollen, and ripe persimmon. Much different than my other bottles. Pours a light gold in the glass, cork was fully intact. In the mouth, the wine is med bodied, bright acid streak with some chalky tannic presence. Not overtly fruity- more mineral than anything with a tangy honeyed finish, doesn't feel like oak, but there is a woody element here that I can't put my finger on... Great wine, great price, and a great evolution. I see a long plateau for this wine.

  • No point in scoring this, since it’s pretty idiosyncratic. Somewhat oxidative and definitely tannic in style (I believe the cuvée speciale is aged in chestnut), this was gruff and tough to enjoy the first day or two, featuring mostly cidery, bruised apples, a little wet wool, and extracted, slightly drying tannins. A week in, this is just starting to come around, with those cidery notes balanced by brighter acidity and slightly less oxidative character with some honey, mushroom, and apple cake character that lengthens the finish. Given the lack of approachability and the structure, I’d be interested to see what this looked like with another 10-30 years of age on it.

(Château d'Epiré Savennières Cuvée Spéciale) Light minerally, herbal nose; focused, minerally, tart baked peach and stones palate; medium finish (a great Savennieres)
