WOW - I was surprised at this 42 year old Cabernet. The cork was totally soft - did’t crumble - so I pushed it in the bottled. Decanted the wine and let it sit for about an hour before tasting it. The color was still pretty good. It is clearly an old wine, but still very pleasant. I opened an 1986 Burgess the same evening. It has held up well too, but the 1981 was the better of the two.

Slow ox for one hour, then decanted for sediment. Deep, complex bouquet with delineated aromas of earth, cherries, smoke, pastille, and licorice. So much freshness and brightness, excellent depth and concentration, and perfect balance between fruity and savory elements. It keeps growing and expanding, with dusty tannin as the perfect backdrop for notes of cherries, black raspberries, and fallen leaves. Long and grippy finish. A glorious wine.

With the gang at Katy Roger's going away party at Trader Vic's. Dark ruby. Good nose. Blackberry. On the palate, deep, firm good fruit. Nice nance, good body. 5-10-15-7: 87/100.
