  • This was an absolutely stunning experience to say the very least. When the wine was opened it gave off a lot of forest floor, pencil shavings, graphite and a little bit of berry fruit. On the palate the wine seemed a little light, with minerality, some berry fruits and earthiness. The wine was a little orange at the rim and the rest was a brownish-brick red color to it. However, the longer this wine sat out it kept improving, putting on weight and the aromas were just stunning as we could pick up floral aromas, aromas of mineral, sweet tobacco, blackberry jam, cassis, very little earth and slight hints of mint. On the palate blackberry jam, mineral, currants, a little earthy and what seemed like a bit of chocolate pipe tobacco flavor. What is absolute amazing is how the wine put on the weight it did and how it changed. So many old wines quickly fade after opening, this one kept improving and improving after sitting out many hours. The structure is still very firm with plenty of backbone. I am going to give this wine the benefit of the doubt in saying I think it just might have a chance of making it to 100 years old and still being a drinkable. This wine drank much younger than 70 years old to say the least.

If anyone from BV is reading this, please do California wines some justice. Go back to making GDL the way Andre made them. There is a great deal of fun in having great California wine that can age like a 1st Growth or a Vega Sicilia. Your modern offerings of GDL have zero chance of seeing this age and being this good. You have the vineyards to make it like this again. You have your BV Napa and BV Rutherford wines, make those your California wines, and return the GDL back to the way Andre made them.
