This needed some air to come around, but not much. Everything I love in Heredia wines - old sweaty leather, tobacco, and dark fruits mixed together in a glass of happiness. Not as powerful as some of the epic vintages but still very much worth the experience.
Sampled 1/17/12. In original printed tissue. Prestine bottle and into neck fill. Wax capsule in perfect condition. Color was amber/rust as expected. Unfortunately, the wine was very acidic and had very little fruit left. After a few hours in the decanter it was clearly more vinegar than wine. Down the drain it goes. Some people thought this wne was supposed to last until 2020. I bought this wine at auction and it had all the indicia of being well cared for, but it was clearly a good 10 years past its optimal drinking window.
I'm not much of a Rioja fan, usually because of excessive oak. Here, the oak is apparent, still, but doesn't stand out as excessive because there is so much else to draw one's attention: the silkiness of the mouthfeel, the length of the palate, the creaminess of the texture against the earthiness and other secondaries and tertiaries on the palate. Wow.
