Takes a bit of decanting (even after 30 years), but the wine opens up beautifully after about an hour or so. Tannins are tame, but the fruit is evident, even if the wine is mellow.

Medium-dark mahogany color. Very tertiary nose of leather, shoe polish, chalkboard, mesquite BBQ, and a slighhtly sour aroma. The palate as a bit of dusty brambly flavor but the fruit has mostly dried up. There's a reprise of the mesquite note on the finish, which recedes quickly. The nose is pleasingly reminiscent of mature Bordeaux, but this should have been enjoyed a few years ago for maximum flavor. Even so, it's always a treat to drink older vintages of Chappellet.

Pop and pour. Cork broke on the way out, and while it showed moisture nearly halfway up there was no seepage. Beautiful bordeaux-like aromatics, garnet coloring with slight bricking, heavy sediment on the cork and in the neck. Wine is enjoyable for those who like softer offerings, but tanins are largely gone and the wine is clearly past its prime. Drink up!
