Brought to a party and on pop and pour, this was not very good. Seal was good, cork came out intact, color was decent. But the wine was dried out, lacking in fruit and was cedary and tart. I wrote it off as being 15 years past peak.
I came back a couple hours later and some fruit had started to emerge, with some leather. About half the bottle got drunk, so I recorked it and took it home.
Came back the next night, and the wine had improved! Very nice pure black fruit, herbs, cedar, leather. Shows especially nicely with food, with smooths out the tannin and mellows the acid and lets the fruit shine. Holding up very well.
From Chad's closet cellar with no temp control - I was not optimistic. This once again showed that people think wine is way more fragile than it actually is. This wine still had plenty of fruit as well as tannin and showed some nice secondary notes. It was probably never a really great wine to begin with but it was a very interesting look back at earlier California wine-making styles.
