Tasting this wine in double-blind fashion (from a well-cellared bottle kindly provided by D.B.) was a very educational experience. With a deep garnet robe and brick rim, it flaunts an effusive bouquet of dark plums, pipe tobacco, leather, Asian spices and truffles. Full-bodied, freshly acidic and with soft residual tannins, it delivers complex flavors which mirror the aromas and throws no heat from its 13.2% alcohol. Dense in the middle and concluding with a very long finish, one can only be amazed by the elegance and balance of this wine. Made by Helen Turley, it carries a much lower alcohol load than more recent bottlings. Drink now-2020.

What a surprise. This wine was still drinkable. We opened this up at a local tasting and my fingers were crossed that this one would be okay. The nose didn't show anything and the high powered alcohol of a typically Turley was missing but still this wine was enjoyable. It had no highs or lows but a dependable profile.

Middle weight wine with a rich aroma. Nice on the palette too, but no specific discerning characteristic. Not as fruit forward or racy as you might get in a Zin. Probably already peaked. Not worth $80 (7/00)

Way past it’s prime but you could tell it was once a good wine
