7 Days in Italy II; 2/17/2019-2/23/2019: A dry vintage, lots of spice showing on the palate, but I’m immediately distracted by the quality of the fruit expression. It calls for my focus.

2018 Visit to Marchesi di Grésy with Jeffrey Chilcott (Martinenga, Barbaresco): Served blind by Jeffrey. An interesting, developed, complex nose of Campari, liquorice, aniseed and dark fruit. Somewhat medicinal (as a positive descriptor). That evolved character carried through to the palate, expressed as dried leaf, tobacco and game meat nuances. Fleshy, generous fruit and seamless. Very good. “The Martinenga presently drinking the best”, noted Jeffrey.

Annual Piemonte Trip - 2018 Edition; 10/12/2018-10/14/2018 (Piemonte, Italy): We are starting to like younger and richer Barbaresci ( not super modern stuff though) more and more and this 2009 Martinenga was a very pretty little number. We decanted it for a good half an hour and had it along its cousin the 2009 Gaiun (Papies 92) and this showed very well. Nice ripe fruit, well balanced and silky on the tannin side. Very good wine to have now and with legs to go but we just found it delicious now with the extra dollop of fruit. 91

30 min decant. Very dry - loads of dark fruit, anise, and game. Definitely needs a big steak.
