  • 12% alcohol.

Quite dark-toned and somewhat translucent mahogany color with a luminous bronze rim. Lots of small particles in suspension. Mature, complex and surprisingly powerful nose of ripe plums, autumnal tones of decaying leaves and mushrooms, some damp soil, a little bit of raisiny fruit, a hint of leather and a bit dirtier touch of animal funk. The wine feels quite old, dry and still surprisingly muscular on the palate with rather tertiary flavors of kirschwasser, blackcurrant jam, some raisiny fruit, a little bit of dark chocolate shavings, light tarry and smoky tones, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and an aged, umami touch of meat consommé. The wine is still remarkably structured with its high acidity and ample tannins that have softened to some extent, but still offer quite a bit of grip. The finish is dry, savory and meaty with lovely flavors of sour cherry bitterness, beef jerky, some tannic grip, a little bit of soy sauve, a hint of raisiny sweetness and a touch of leather. The complex aftertaste persists for a very long time.

A wonderfully developed, complex and impressively structured Taurasi that is still alive and holding up well, although starting to show the first signs of deterioration. Most likely the wine was at its peak some 5-10 years ago, but there's still a lot of stuffing left, so the wine won't be in pieces anytime soon. For the fans of geriatric wines, this wine will offer a lot of pleasure for years to come, but in our tasting some people who preferred a wine to show some more youthful fruit considered the wine a bit too evolved. Granted, this wine has taken its first steps downhill, but with its lovely tertiary fruit and impressive structure, this wine is far from being dead. Not the best old Mastroberardino I've had, but a lovely effort nevertheless.

  • Just too far gone. No VA to speak of, however.

The lesson here is that an aglianico, even a reserva, simply can't go 37 years.
