This tasting and sale keeps getting better every year. I had time to taste probably 75% of the wines and took notes on 75-80% of those. There are few better opportunities in the US to taste such a great cross-section of recent releases from Burgundy and Champagne at various levels in order to assess vintages, understand producers and find wine you truly like.
Notes are not in the sequence tasted, but organized by Champagne (where I tasted the smallest %, probably just 20%), then red Burg, then white Burg. That is roughly the sequence in which I tasted. Within each category they are listed by distributor, even though I followed my own path.
Tasting, brief note. Approachable red cherry with a slightly rustic edge but still nicely balanced for near-term consumption.

Tasting, brief note. Black and red cherry on nose and palate with some floral background hints. Good weight and emerging balance. Very good 90 point potential here, better in another year or three.

Tasting, brief note. Came across as slightly reduced, which I don't recall from prior times I've tried this wine. Black cherry with some red cherry hints and a firm Pommard structure throughout. Good.

Tasting, brief note. Red cherry on nose and palate with some black fruit hints on palate. Subtle spice hints. Firm and more power than I'd expect from a 2011 Volnay, but everything is in enough harmony that I expect this will emerge nicely, but certainly needs 5+ more years in the cellar

Tasting, brief note. Lots of charming red berry aromas and flavors, that come across as very approachable to start, picking up density and complexity at the finish with some sneaky structure. Very good, with no signs of any rough edges in many 2011s.

Tasting, brief note. Much like i recall from the summer, there is a lot of red berry and cherry with good density and meatiness for wine at this level. I expect it will be even better in another year.

Tasting, brief note. Mostly black fruit with classically firm, black Gevrey character, but today a bit too rugged for the level of fruit coming through. This was nice, but I definitely preferred the 2012 vintage tasted immediately after.

Tasting, brief note. Fleshy and meaty with lots of black fruit and an enjoyable slightly smoky, gamy character. Strongly prefer this vs the 2011 just tasted.

Tasting, brief note. Lighter styled red fruit with subtle spice and some pronounced structure. I don't think was quite as enjoyable today as I recall from the few other times I've had this wine.

Tasting, brief note. Starts with accessible, fun red fruit that I truly enjoy. More structure comes through from middle to finish, which may provide longevity, but might also stay rougher than I'd prefer.

Tasting, brief note. Mostly red berries on nose and palate with some black fruit and savory spice hints. Slightly rugged middle to finish for now, this needs time in the cellar. Good.

Tasting, brief note. Like the other Groffier 2011s, this seems to be shutting down quite early. Great red fruit aromatics to start that follow through on the palate, just slightly more subdued than previous times tasted. As a result, again like the other Groffier 2011s, the structure is more pronounced right now than i recall from before. Hold this in the cellar.

Tasting, brief note. Unfortunately the first bottle was just finished, so I got the 1st or 2nd taste from the 2nd bottle open minutes before. Clearly impressive concentration with mostly red fruit aromas and flavors, but very, very firm, almost hard at that moment. Unfair to try to assess today.

Tasting, brief note. Black fruit, very dense, unmistakably Gevrey. More closed and firmly structured than I'd expect from an '09 Gevrey Villages, but this has a lot to offer, just preferably in a few more years.

Tasting, brief note. Moderate red fruit and subtle spice, this relies mostly on its good textures and balance.

Tasting, brief note. In contrast the the Vosne, this retains the elegance and style I like with so many 2012s, but also has good density and attractive fleshy red fruit to start. Cellar worthy.

Tasting, brief note. Good fruit throughout. Soft, rounded fruit most of the way, slight rough edge at finish.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Tasting, brief note. Nicely floral start with rounded black fruit aromas and flavors with moderate depth, finishing with good acidity and minerality. Accessible and balanced now.

Tasting, brief note. More 1995 character than Volnay, this showed some moderate maturing fruit, but more structure than flavor. Others enjoyed this more than I did.

Tasting, brief note. All red fruit, lighter styled with modest spice. Good now.

Tasting, brief note. Not a personal favorite. Some rough edges and a bit too barnyardy for a wine this young.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Tasting, brief note. Dense black fruit, firm and seemingly slightly brooding today with some gamy character. I liked this more a year ago, so think it is shut down and best to hold for a few years in the cellar before revisiting.

Tasting, brief note. This wine continues to show great without interruption. Bright black fruit, some meaty and animale hints, but lots of freshness and balance. Good now.

Tasting, brief note. Modern styled start with lush fruit and pronounced new oak. A faint green edge on the periphery.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Tasting, brief note. This has very charming and pretty red and black fruit with modest spice. Easy and fun from start to finish, this is a red Burgundy anybody would enjoy. But it just didn't show any Vosne typicity to me, so I didn't enjoy this wine as much as some others tasting it at the same time.

Tasting, brief note. Big wine with dense red and black berry and some meatiness reminiscent of good Gevrey Villages wine. Lots of acidity and firm character, this will also benefit from another couple of years in the cellar.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Tasting, brief note. I found this slightly odd, with moderate fruit concentration and ripeness for the vintage and more firm tannins (relative to fruit) than what I'd expect from Volnay 1er Cru. I will have to try this again in the next year or two.

Tasting, brief note. Bright red berry aromas with lots of floral charm and nuance. Red berry and cherry flavors with modest spice. Classically Volnay to me. Very good.

Tasting, brief note. I've had very different experiences the 3 or 4 times I've tried this wine, and today's was good. Mostly red cherry, some black cherry, all in a slightly lean style. Good spice. No rough or green elements.

Tasting, brief note. This comes across far more as "Corton" than "2006" with none of the ripe fleshiness of the vintage. Backward red fruit and slightly hard today. This will need more time to provide pleasure.

Tasting, brief note. Much like when I tasting this in the spring, it is forward and accessible. Some earthy notes are coming through already. Good now, best to drink young.

Tasting, brief note. Black, firm fruit that has an attractive powerful, fleshy character. While the fruit came across as very Nuits St Georges, the spice was very Vosne-like. Very good overall.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Tasting, brief note. Good fruit but slightly horsey. I didn't enjoy this as much today as I did in the spring. It seemed more reminiscent of Grivot's 2010 Vosne, which I have never really appreciated.

Tasting, brief note. Lus, forward fruit with moderate spice, already starting to show hints of maturity and evolution. At its peak, surprisingly early, even for a 2006.

Tasting, brief note. Clearly very good concentration but I found this slightly shut down and brooding today with more pronounced firm structure vs what i recall from when last tried a few years ago.

Tasting, brief note. Dense and meaty with extreme concentration for Villages wine. Didn't quite find this in harmony.

Tasting, brief note. Ripe black berries with hints of chocolate and earth. Modern styled new oak is still pronounced, but is supported by very good fruit quality and concentration. Very good now, this will be better in a few more years.

Tasting, brief note. Roasted meat and mushroom are center stage here with firm, powerful black fruit. Hold for a few more years.

Tasting, brief note. Deeper, darker and blacker than the others just tasted. Also very good, but this is a Bourgogne that will reward some time in the cellar.

Tasting, brief note. Red fruit with subtle spice. Slightly more barnyard than I'd want for wine this young, also a bit firm. OK.

Tasting, brief note. Red berry and cherry that are more forthcoming than I recall from when tasted in the spring. Floral hints and savory spice in background, this will be a very good young drinking Volnay 1er.

Tasting, brief note. All black fruit. Slightly rustic with some rough edges right now, so this will need at least another 3-5 years. OK.

Tasting, brief note. Sulfur to start, this needed some serious aeration to assess. Lean red fruit throughout with good spice, nice overall balance. This should evolve nicely in classic style.

Tasting, brief note. I haven't had this wine in several years and like its trajectory. Big red fruit with background spice. Good concentration, good length, slightly firm right now. I expect this will emerge nicely in a few more years with 89-90 point potential.

Tasting, brief note. Bright red fruit with hints of new oak that will require a year or two to integrate. Lots of texture and minerality that comes across as very Chambolle already today. Very good 90+ point potential here.

Tasting, brief note. One of my favorites today. Spice driven start seemed very Vosne, but with blacker fruit. Serious and powerful with long, meaty finish. Very impressive.

Tasting, brief note. Spice-driven nose with fresh black berries. Palate slightly less accessible even with same fruit profile, just more firm. Good concentration for Villages level. Still needs a little more cellar or decanter time to soften.

Tasting, brief note. In contrast with the very accessible D Mugneret '11 Echezeaux just tasted, this Meo is dense, dark and brooding. Very good concentration and spice bodes well for this wine, which shows none of the jagged edges many other 2011s are showing.

Tasting, brief note. One of my favorite wines today. Lots of powerful red fruit coming through loud-and-clear, even with Malconsorts' classic intense and pronounced minerality and firmness. This has great concentration, but will require patience.

Tasting, brief note. Similar to previous times tasted, this has moderate fruit concentration, showing red and black cherry, all with good spice. Not at the same level of any of the previous vintages since Nicole took charge in 2006.

Tasting, brief note. Black cherry and some roast game meat, but in a leaner style. Some green hints on finish. Moderate depth.

Tasting, brief note. Another of my favorites today. Good cross-section of red and black berry aromas and flavors with enticing organic spice and hints of cooked mushroom and animale. Subtle structure makes me think this will be younger drinking vs other recent vintages. so think it might be worth revisiting starting 2020 or so.

Tasting, brief note. Great aromatic start with lots of red and black cherry, background spice and dried herbs. Similar flavor profile but with very firm structure start-to-finish that made this seem extremely firm and shut down already. Tough to fairly assess.

Tasting, brief note. Enticing floral start with lots of green and yellow apple character. Very savory spice and Grand Cru density. This is the finest vintage so far this Bourgogne and it makes me sure we are close to this once again being classified as Musigny. 93-94 point potential here.

Tasting, brief note. The 4th time I've tried this wine, it is changing for the better in bottle. While it seemed more lush and forward when tasted just after release, both tastings this fall come across as leaner, more restrained, elegant and cellar worthy.
