2007 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques

Pinot Noir more

Sixth bottle from a full case purchased from a reputable UK merchant in 2011. Not decanted, opened five hours in advance. On cracking form. Completely open and engaging, deep and complex nose, spicy and lifted (70% stems), reminiscent of the Ahr (Walporzheimer Kräuterberg), hints of forest floor and sweet oak (100% new), ripe and elegant palate with gentle but firm tannic grip, harmonious and energetic, good weight of fruit, long and complete, finishes just a bit dry. Stunning quality for a 2007, well on its plateau of maturity, another decade in it at least.

Whoa.
Dense powerful primary fruit, all ripe red cherries, earth and iron, spicebox, stems, perfumed aromatics.
Medium+ tannic grip and medium acids. Last glass evolved to show some licorice, salt and a touch of tar. 13.5% Alc.

Every now and then you sip a delicate Syrah that is easy to confuse with Pinot, but this is the first Pinot I’ve had that tasted like a love-child of Nebbiolo…nothing delicate here.

This is a delicious glass with loads of good material to age well and interestingly, but I suspect it will be a polarizing wine; if ethereal and light-bodied are what you want from Burgundy, this ain’t it.

Tasty but seemed a bit angular, needing more time and/or air to resolve. If I were to open another bottle anytime soon wouldn’t recommend pop and pour. The opulence is there, and it’s still on the upswing.

Tasting through Bruno Clair's impressive 2022 portfolio. There is much to like about the wines and this vintage in general. These are complex, deep wines with an enchanting, bright red fruit perfume. The purity is impressive, and silky elegance can be found in all the wines down to the village level (their Gevrey Village has to be one of the best village level Burgs I've had). The star of the lineup was unsurprisingly their bright, pure and refined Clos de Beze (96pts+), followed by a very promising, slightly more muscular and mineral-driven Bonnes Mares (95pts).

TN: Intense red fruit on the nose, complemented by spices and minerality. Harmonious and inviting. On the palate this has impressive depth with a broad array of red and blue fruit, cola notes, stems, menthol, spices, minerality. Very fine, silky tannins and lots of freshness. Quite complete and easily 93/94pts.

This is such a great bottle of wine. Fourrier really nailed the 2007 vintage. This is as red fruited as you will see CSJ. Glorious really with red, dark red, cherry ore mineral, spices, balanced and pure as all get out! This is a great bottle to have guarding your cellar!

Pronounced nose intensity with notes of red fruits, strawberry, flora. Needs a lot of aeration. It gets better with more air. Probably one of the best 2011 vintage wine I have tasted.

Wines in Cardiff; 4/19/2024-4/20/2024: Nose of cherries - but not singing. I wanted a bit more nose from this fabled vineyard.
Good fruit framed by chalky tannins for pinot and big structure. The structure slightly overpowering initially.
Became a lot better with air but by the time I discovered this we only had little left in the bottle!
From Bo’s cellar.

Bit tannic but great fruits (red fruits) both on nose and palate. Acidity balanced once accompanied by roast beef I had for dinner. Improved with time and air. Overall very enjoyable - drank side by side to lamarches Clôs de vogeout which performed slightly better tonight.

Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): En Magnum. Beautifully mature nose displaying sweet red fruit, raspberry, strawberry, rose, a hint of sous bois, grilled fat and mineral. Fully integrated palate, finely layered sweet red fruit, elegant and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven floral finish. I had a magnum from the same batch in 2017 and thought the bottle was not quite ready. This is drinking beautifully.

Pop and poured, color was splendid and the condition of this bottle was great. A little on the lighter but was expected from the vintage. Also I much prefer this "classic" Burgundian vintage over the rich fruit bombs of 2015. Nose was beautiful and airy, red cherries, potpourri, a bit of dried autumn leaves, the gevrey earthiness and a hint of sandalwood made this very enjoyable. On the palate a little tight and a bit acidic, but opens up with time and a little air. Enjoyable today but will last another 5-10 years easy.

What a treat to drink Rousseau! Taken to a restaurant and let breathe in Zalto Burgundy glasses. Beautiful if on the young side. Perfectly balanced stewed and red fruit almost Zen-like. Some morelo cherry, green stem, and hawthorn bush notes. In time a touch of mint. This did close up some towards the glass. 95-96 now with upside in a few years.

Drank side-by-side with 17' Rousseau Lavaux St. Jacques. The 18' CSJ was more approachable and overall drank better than the 17', but both wines were showing quite young compared to the 14' Mugnier Amoureuses and the 16' Bizot Bourgogne also on the table. Lovely wine, will be better with time.

An insane floral spice box that long-jumps from the glass - you can smell this wine from 6 feet away - it fills the room… Wow the nose on this wine… the Palette is waves of silk and spice followed by a tide of crystalline red fruits that saturate the pallet and meld with velvety tannin. This wine is sensual, spicy, and long - it has staying power. A real wow wine… Obviously young, but so complex and enjoyable even in this early state.

Joyaux en Côte de Nuits (Marsannay/Gevrey-Chambertin) - Les Grands Jours de Bourgogne (Tonnellerie Rousseau - Gevrey-Chambertin): Walkaround tasting with the producers. Bright black fruit with subtle meat and spice, this seems to be starting to shut down hard, so I might be undervaluing this wine's long term potential.

Just a beautiful wine. CSJ is certainly the sweet spot in the Rousseau lineup if you can't or won't pay for the Chambertin or Beze. This was clean, rich, pretty, red currant, deep, bold textured, aromatic, delicious wine. None of the roastiness of the vintage. This will undoubtedly get even better.

The one with Luca Roagna (Teochew Paradise): Pop and poured into decanter for 15 mins before serving. Flamboyant bouquet with iron, violets, roses and macerated plums with persistent fruit concentration on the palate along with dried leaves, blood orange, dried roses and gevrey spice. While plenty of fruit, this was slightly lean and thin on the palate although it culminated in a regal fashioned finish with plenty of length and fruit concentration. Truly, Rousseau's Clos st Jacques are a special bunch.
