Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): En Magnum. Beautifully mature nose displaying sweet red fruit, raspberry, strawberry, rose, a hint of sous bois, grilled fat and mineral. Fully integrated palate, finely layered sweet red fruit, elegant and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven floral finish. I had a magnum from the same batch in 2017 and thought the bottle was not quite ready. This is drinking beautifully.

Fully resolved. Bit soft on the nose and palate. Sweet, soft red fruit. Very easy drinking and moreish with no hard edges at all but lacks an extra dimension. Looking back on my note from 2013, who knows whether this bottle was representative but the wine seems to have lost the joie de vivre that made it so much fun back then.

Haven't had Rousseau's version of this plot, but have had it from all other producers and it is pretty clear to me that this doesn't deserve a promotion to GC level. This wine although very nice lacks nuances to really drive to higher echelons of burgundy. Many made a point that Fourrier produces a very different style nowadays.

Beat the '96 Rousseau: Very similar to the 2002 that I had last month. This was a little tighter with bigger and warmer dark red fruit, but with similar notes of soy, forest floor and mushroom. Again, not the sexy, modern Fourrier for sure but a proper old-school, masculine Burgundy.

Beat the 96 Rousseau Ruchottes: Still fresh, tea leaf, orange peel. Nice palate with lively acid and mild tannins ending with some heat.
