Flight 1 (21 notes)

White - Sparkling
2002 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil France, Champagne
98 points
Lemon curd, toast, marshmallow, earthy spice, white florals and apple. The palate has a sizzling blade of acidity, slicing through effortlessly. With time in the glass, the power of the exceptionally pure and mineral fruit starts to catch up and the balance feels stunning. The length is stunning. Superb across every facet. Wow.
White - Sparkling
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
96 points
Golden colour. Oyster shell, honey, mandarin and ginger aromas. Rich and powerful, the complexity has started to shine through across the core of tingling acidity. Great length and balance, this was a lot better than a recent bottle that was too advanced - this still did feel like it was hitting a great point to drink though, I wonder what further time will bring.
White
2014 Weingut Keller Riesling G-Max Germany, Rheinhessen
97 points
Flamboyant nose of lemon, orange, wild florals, petrol, apricot and peach. Explosive palate, with unbelievable layers to it. The texture is just unreal, playing perfectly along with the fruit richness. Even with all the power and depth, there is still a lightness and freshness that gives this a sense of ultimate refinement. What a stunning wine.
White
2009 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
91 points
Sesame, orange, toast, apple and musk - opens more as it warms up. There is a little hint of bitterness toward the finish but as the fruit lifts with time in the glass, it isn't as apparent. Good length and this should age decently well.
White
2011 Coche-Dury Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Mint, spice, smoke, melon and floral notes. Has good richness on the palate, while there is a softness upfront it is really quite approachable and ends up feeling well balanced when the acidity cuts in at the mid-palate. Very good, maybe lacking a little interest to be better though.
Red
1978 G. Vachet-Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
89 points
Perfect level and the colour looked great. Cherry, tomato, ash and earth aromas. Still has good acidity and nice earthy savoury elements. In excellent condition and holding up really well.
Red
2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
94 points
Black cherry, some stalks, perfumed florals and some meaty and earthy notes. The palate is sumptuous, with great depth of fruit. Style, structure and pleasure all tied up into a superb wine. As always, Rousseau brings the goods.

2013 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
93 points
Bright ruby red colour. Very pretty nose - raspberry, roses, red cherry and spices. The palate has lovely balanced, the acidity feels just right, it works really well with the restrained red fruit profile. Composed and decidedly pretty.

2004 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
89 points
Almond, green beans, vegetal and ash aromas. There is some bitterness on the palate, while it is holding on okay since I last tried it, it definitely felt more green. Has some interest, but for the level and reputation of this vineyard and producer, it's not really okay.

2011 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
91 points
Ethereal nose - mineral, stalk and spices. The palate is lithe as well, with the structure and the fruit definitely not asserting themselves. Felt like it shutdown even more with time in the glass. Some further ageing will probably serve this well to built some more interest but I don't think it'll ever be stunning.

1997 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
95 points
Opened about 11 hours before pouring. Ash, tobacco, cherry, blackberry and tar. The palate shows off youthful fruit, with the power showing but held in check by some very fine tannins. Has weight but also depth and persistence. Just a knockout wine that will be even better with another 10+ years.

Blind. Roses, redcurrant, cherry - pretty and lifted perfume. Really impressive balance and composure on the palate, there is such good definition to the fruit. Structured and really a beautiful wine. Great now but even more to come with time.

2011 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Upfront fruits on the nose - blackcurrant, raspberry and cherries. The palate certainly steps up - with power, structure and great length. The fruit density pushes itself forward, though there is also a pure element underlying. Give this one plenty of time before approaching.

1995 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
96 points
Lifted, perfumed nose of earth, redcurrant, iron and graphite. The palate is singing, with that perfumed fruit showing as layered and deep, while the structure keeps it all propped up. Very long in length, with the texture consistently excellent throughout. Exciting wine to drink.

1999 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Truffle, earth, red berries, spice and plums on the nose. Youthful flavours, though the fruit does show off the cooler nature of the vintage. The acidity is impressive in that it really gives verve and spark to the palate. Has enough structure that this will be at its best in another 10+ years.

2005 Puriri Hills Clevedon Pope New Zealand, North Island, Auckland

Blind. Herb, earth, stalk and some savoury meaty notes. The palate shows some sweet red fruit which sends most of us thinking of the new world, but there are plenty of savoury elements here as well. Great length and it gains plenty of points for how stylish and interesting it feels. Impressive and easily the best of the 2005 Puriri Hills wines I've tried.

2009 Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo Corullon La Faraona Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo

Pepper, bacon, redcurrant, light herbs, roses and smoke - plenty of interest on the nose. The palate shows lovely balance, with great detail and poise to the fruit. Good length and texture. Focused and really quite impressive.

2010 Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo Corullon Moncerbal Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo

Charcoal, cherry, bramble, smoke and redcurrants - a good contrast between the red fruit and green characters. Quite a bit of spice on the palate, the fruit here is a little bit broader and has a little less depth than the 2009 La Faraona. Still has some decent texture and is great to drink, without being quite the star that the La Faraona was.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2011 Albert Boxler Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles France, Alsace
95 points
From Heimbourg de Turckheim. Rosewater and turkish delight, orange, fairy floss, pear, peach and apricot - pure and lifted Gewurztraminer aromatics. Beautifully put together on the palate, there is intensity to the sweetness, but the purity of the fruit is still allowed to shine through. The balance and flow are exceptional. A sprinkle of magic in this.
White - Fortified
N.V. Chambers Rosewood Muscadelle (Tokay) Rare Australia, Victoria, North East, Rutherglen
97 points
Cherry. toffee, Christmas cake, charcoal, caramel, coffee and chocolate - there is a lot going on, with new notes every time I come back to it. The palate is intense and hugely viscous, but it still retains a freshness and unbelieavble vibrancy. Superb length and drive, the complexity is breathtaking. Brilliant stuff.
White - Fortified
N.V. Stanton & Killeen Rare Topaque Rutherglen Australia, Victoria, North East, Rutherglen
92 points
Sultana, chocolate, spice, cherry and old woody oak notes. The palate has good balance, while the depth isn't as good as the Chambers Rare, there is still plenty of depth and lift from the spirit. No element feels out of place here - really a cracking way to finish a night.
