Introduction

13 of us gathered for the monthly tasting event. There were tables of 6 and 7 people.

Flight 1 (21 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Voirin-Jumel Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
Same bottle as Chablis28. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. I thought this was solid tonight; I didn't really notice any oxidative character. I thought it was pretty fresh with maybe a bit of chalkiness on the finish.
White - Sparkling
2007 Cesarini Sforza Trento Aquila Reale Riserva Brut Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Trentino, Trento
88 points
Small pour. This was an interesting wine, with mint, fresh cut herbs, citrus and a bit of smoke. The texture and palate was almost a bit buttery. Enjoyable and certainly not Champagne-like, but a fun alternative if at the right price. 88+pts.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Champagne Le Mesnil Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
Drank a small pour over 15 minutes. This was the best example I've had of this in recent memory. More often I find this heavy handed and just to overtly sharp and chalky. This bottle, seemed lighter, with a clean mineral core and more green fruits to balance and support the mineral spine.

White
2009 Domaine Faury Condrieu France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
flawed
This wasn't right, no fruit, lots of alcohol, sharp and disjointed. May simply be OTH.
White
2014 Pierre Gaillard Condrieu France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
89 points
Tropical, floral, nose which stands out over the somewhat angular palate, the palate being leaner, tropical fruit, decent length. Good.
White
2011 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
Small taste. Lemon, clean, very nice minerality.
White
2013 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Pale gold color. Thrilled to get a pour of this. Really great. Wonderful complex nose, fresh, slightly tropical fruits, lemon, citrus, dried herbs. The palate is riveting, lively and so bright, restrained tropical fruits and tangerine, apricot, wet stone minerality, very crisp and very long. Wow. Thanks Jason and Tracy. 94+ to 95pts.

2004 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
90 points
Medium dark gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. I probably pushed this bottle a bit too far past its prime looking for the right opportunity at a NR tasting. Oh, well. Still good, but also not a wine everyone is going to like under the best of circumstances. This shows age more in the fruit profile being considerably more subdued. The oily, waxy, lacquer like quality and the hazelnut is now dominant. It has that old Lopez character that can sometimes be too dominant. Drink these soon.

2012 Kistler Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Drank a small glass over 30 minutes. This wine didn't get any love at our table. I think I was alone in enjoying it. I can live with that. Yes, there is oak here. No, I didn't think it was excessive, especially given its age. I found very nice tangerine, meyer lemon on the nose with a freshness that could compete with the oak and spice. The palate was rich and round, with enough acid there to keep it crisp, and there's plenty of depth. Oak, yes, but clean and still complimentary.
Red
2006 Patrick Jasmin Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very dark red/purple color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Same bottle as Chablis28. I agree with Chablis28 on his take. This felt youthful and a bit off kilter. Certainly it has potential and the given more cellar time, I think this will turn out to be very good. As it stands now, good, but a bit disjointed. I don't think it will ever rock your world but it should come into a better balance over a couple years. Though I would not expect this to be a long term ager.

1998 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
Very dark red/purple color. Drank a small pour over 15 minutes. I didn't write down any detailed notes on this. But it was Dave's bottle from the other table and it was one of the highlights. Showing good balance, a nice savory element, with roasted meats, dark red fruits and nice tannins. 91+ to 92pts.

2003 Domaine Belle Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
Very dark red/purple color. Splash double decanted. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This also suffered from getting too warm in the restaurant, but at its peak, it had a nice freshness with very dark red berry fruits, blackberry liqueur, black cherry and plenty of savory, earthy and roasted character followed by anise and spice on the finish. It got more "cloudy" as it became warmer. The vintage character is there, and when cool it maintains correctness.

1998 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
Very dark red/ purple color with subtle bricking over 5 mm. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was a highlight wine and probably my red WOTN. It showed the classic forest floor and savory nose with dark red fruits mixed with spicy floral elements. The palate is medium full bodied, very refined and elegant with depth and balance and a well integrated structure, funky, cedar box cigar on top of such pure cass and dark berry fruits. Long and pleasurable, this is still a force.
Red
2005 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Terres Sombres France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Very dark red/purple color. Drank a small pour over 30 minutes. Very good, almost liqueur like, blackberry liqueur, black plum, thick and almost unctuous, charcoal, pepper, full bodied.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. Well, it is evident that this is destined for greatness. While it is youthful and exuberant, it has all the elements that young, exciting Sauternes should have. Great fruit, exotic, but not overly tropical, tangerine, peach, honey, spice, and plenty of crisp acid. I'll take this to the bank. 93(+) with room to grow.

1999 Cave de Tain Hermitage Les Nobles Rives France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
90 points
Very dark purple/red color with modest bricking PNP, Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nicely earthy, funk. brooding dark fruits, black cherry, firm, somewhat grippy tannins.
Red
2003 Patrick & Christophe Bonnefond Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
88 points
This had that great savory character I want in my syrah, but the alcohol was showing just too much. I suspect a vintage issue as the fruit just couldn't hold up.
Red
2006 M. Chapoutier St. Joseph Les Granits France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
90 points
This was good, some heat, but with lovely very dark fruits and a long, resonant finish.
Red
2003 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Classique France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
82 points
Small pour. Glad to try, but quite disappointed. Wow, totally green and herbal in a hot vintage. Certainly not what I look for. Would have absolutely though this was Carmenere blind.
Red
2001 Michel Perraud Cornas Le Vignon France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
87 points
This suffered from a lack of balance, red fruits, heat, meaty, oak, but just too disjointed.
Red
2004 Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Small pour. Spicy, oak, full bodied, dark fruits, firm tannins.
