A week in Napa for the Napa Valley Grape Growers Harvest STOMP party

Napa, CA

Tasted August 22, 2017 - August 27, 2017 by retired_and_roving with 753 views

Introduction

Each year our generous friends host a large group in association with the annual Napa Valley Grape Growers Harvest STOMP charity event. This is a terrific organization that supports the preservation of the Napa Valley's world class vineyards and through its Farmworker Foundation provides educational and professional development services to the napa farmworker community. We always have an amazing time and are happy to support this worthy cause.

In conjunction with the event, we often have the opportunity to participate in unique tasting visits with various members of the Grower community and this year was no exception.

Flight 1 - Hudson Ranch Visit with Ed Hudson (6 notes)

We met up with Ed Hudson, at the Hudson Ranch in Carneros in the morning to tour the ranch and taste through his current line up of wines. The Hudson Ranch is a very impressive operation - spanning 2000 acres and with views from the upper elevations that take in the Bay and on clear days the bridge. It is a working farm with vegetable gardens, pigs and sheep and some of the land is leased for cattle grazing. Only 200 acres of the property are under vine and the majority of the fruit is sold to other producers - primarily known for their Chardonnay and Syrah. The Hudson Vineyards wine only represents a very small portion of the fruit that is grown.

I am not sure if they are open to the public for visits, but if you ever get the chance this is highly recommended. Some of the things we loved were:
1) the Gourd Alley - a long trellis covered in vines where large gourds (think taller than 3 feet) are grown and you walk between them - like something from Jurassic Park.
2) the Giant Pumpkins - the farmworkers compete for the largest pumpkin - there is a patch with these 500plus pound pumpkins under tents - lovingly cared for to ensure maximum growth
3) the Pigs - raised for sale, we got to see babies, and multiple ages between -
4) THE WINE - it is delicious and great value!!

We also loved driving around the ranch with Ed in his pickup truck - exploring the vast landscape and the views from the top. After the tour we gathered at a long picnic table outside and tasted through the range of wines.

WOTF - 2014 Hudson Vineyards Syrah

Rosé
2016 Hudson Vineyards Grenache Rosé USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Tasting vist at Hudson Ranch. First of 6 wines tasted that morning. A leaner styled rose - more Provencal in style than Cali. Bright and tart with a bit of strawberry and minerality on the finish. Would have liked to circle back to this, first wine of the day in the morning - so took the palate a bit of time to adjust.

2016 Hudson Vineyards White Study USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Tasting visit at Hudson Ranch. 2nd wine tasted in the line-up and totally in my wheelhouse - delicious! A blend of mediterranean varieties - 16% Albarino, 14% Arneis, 15% Friulano, 6% Greco, 26% Ribolla, 23% Verdejo. Just bright, clean, refreshing and with great minerality and salinity. Very enjoyable!!

White
2014 Hudson Vineyards Chardonnay USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Tasting visit at Hudson Ranch. 3rd wine in the lineup. Directly after the leaner styled Grenache Rose and the White Study - this tasted quite rich. However I would not call it a butter bomb, just much richer than the two previous wines. Not generally a chard fan - so did not really do anything for me - although one of the other tasters in our group loved this.

Red
2015 Hudson Vineyards Pick Up Sticks USA, California
Tasting visit at Hudson Ranch. 4th wine in the line-up and the first of the reds. A Grenache blend. Cherry and herbal flavors in a medium bodied wine, light and elegant on the palate with a nice herbal finish. As the previous taster noted, the light, bright color is reminiscent of Rayas. Great value.

2014 Hudson Vineyards Syrah USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Tasting visit at Hudson Ranch. 5th wine in the lineup. I am a big fan of the Hudson Ranch Syrah and this was no exception. Dark blackberry fruits, peppercorn and olive tapenade - long finish. Drinking well young, but can't wait to see how this evolves over the next 10 years.

2013 Hudson Vineyards Old Master USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Tasting visit at Hudson Ranch. Last of 6 wines tasted. I did not note the % mix, but I believe predominantly cab franc. Another stand out red wine from Hudson Ranch. Very dark fruits, drying tannins, some herbal notes (black tea) and a long, long finish. This one needs some cellaring to knit together but the stuffing is all there.

Flight 2 - Opus One Visit with Michael Silacci & Aimee Baker (2 notes)

After our Hudson Ranch visit we headed over to Opus One to spend some time with Michael Silacci. Michael gave us a a brief tour of the facility and then took us to the lab to meet the team there and get an overview of some of the projects that they are working on. Then we headed down to the barrel room to do a tasting with Aimee Baker, the assistant winemaker.

WOTF - 2013 Opus One

Red
2007 Opus One USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting visit at Opus One. A riper vintage so definitely a more opulent wine. Dark fruits and full of flavor, but still well balanced and silky in the mouthfeel. This is in no way a shy wine, but manages to express both power and elegance at the same time. Drinking very nicely now but should continue to age and improve for some time.

2013 Opus One USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting visit at Opus One. Tasted side by side with the 2007, I would have to give a slight nod to the 2013 as my preferred vintage. I think this one just showed slightly more acidity in the structure, which leans more to my preference. Dark black fruits fruits, with some earthy components and a very smooth and elegant mouthfeel - and just enough acidity to keep it fresh. Very nice!

Flight 3 - Champagne & Caviar Dinner (3 notes)

After a long day of wine tasting, what better way to end the day then a champagne and caviar dinner. The following champagnes were paired with Tsar Imperial Ossetra Caviar from Petrossian and an assortment of chopped egg whites, egg yolks, capers, creme fraiche, onions and pickles, buckwheat blinis, brioche toast points and potato chips.

WOTF - for me the 2004 Dom Perignon Champagne Rose

White - Sparkling
2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Served quite chilled from the fridge, so initially was not that expressive. With time in the glass the nose and palate started to really open up. On the nose lemon zest, apple and crushed stone. Very fresh and lively in the mouth with a fine mousse. Not much in the way of bread dough or oxidative notes - more clean and bright in style. What a special treat to get to taste this. Paired beautifully with the caviar.

1998 Dom Pérignon Champagne P2 France, Champagne
Tasted after the '02 Salon, not quite as chilled and more open for business from the get go. Lovely nose of bread dough. On the palate some yeasty notes, golden apple and lemon spritz. A bit richer in style and weight than the Salon. Very nice!

Rosé - Sparkling
2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé France, Champagne
The last of the champagnes tasting for the caviar pairing and my WOTN - this was just delicious. Gorgeous rosy pink color in the glass. On the palate nice fine bubbles, wild strawberries, lemongrass, acidity and a nice mouthfeel. Overall favorite of the group this night.

Flight 4 - Snowden Ranch Visit (8 notes)

A really special visit to Snowden Ranch beginning with a multi-location vineyard tasting and ending with a mexican feast served poolside. The ranch is located up a very long and rough road that is narrow and twisty - requiring a rugged four wheel drive vehicle. We entered at close to valley level and climbed about 800 feet. Apparently the ranch can also be reached from a paved road at the top:-) Randy Snowden was our host for the vineyard tasting as we stopped at the Lost Vineyard, Levi Philander David vineyard and the Los Ricos Vineyard. Wine serving stations were set up on wine barrels and paired with different types of cheese crackers (Goldfish, Wheat Thins and Annies). The property is one mile long and 1/4 mile wide, surrounded by deep woods and moving uphill. They have owned it since 1955 and it feels very authentic and old Napa. After the tastings we made our way to the Snowden's private swimming pool where we were joined by Randy's wife Janet, his brother Scott and his wife Joanne and their daughter Susanne. While they don't have a house on the property, they do have a swimming pool and outdoor dining area. Their vineyard manager's son, has an amazing catering business and prepared us a Mexican Feast. Dinner was accompanied by a number of additional wines, but the only one I have notes on is the 98 CS - so sorry for that. When the sun went down we climbed back in the trucks by flashlight and headed down the long hill back to the valley. A truly special visit with really awesome people.

The wines are all made by Scott's daughter Diana Snowden, who is the winemaker for Dujac in Burgundy (her husband's family's estate). She returns a few times a year to the US to make the wine's at Snowden for her family. With her background, the wines lean more to classically old world style wines that are elegant and well balanced. They are also terrific value and just plain good.

WOTF - 2015 Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon Los Ricos Vineyard

White
2016 Snowden Sauvignon Blanc Sunninghill USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting visit to Snowden Ranch with Randy Snowden. First wine tasted while standing in the vineyard overlooking the SB vines. Planted in the middle of the cab sauvignon vines, on a low spot in the hillside Lost Vineyard about 800 ft elevation. This patch gets some nice sun! This a bordeaux style Sauv Blanc, much leaner then a typical Cali SB - elegant and clean with stone fruit, citrus and minerals. Paired with Parmesan Goldfish:-)

2014 Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley
Vineyard tasting visit with Randy Snowden. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Sipped on this while overlooking the vineyard where these grapes are grown. A supple and easy drinking cab say and a terrific value. Nicely balanced, not overly extracted, dark fruits and soft tannins, with that velvety texture coming in from the Merlot.

2013 Snowden Merlot Lost Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
Tasting visit with Randy Snowden. Tasted this in a flight of three single variety bottlings (Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot). This was ready and open for business, velvety texture and well rounded in the mouthfeel. Red fruits and some earthy character. Drinking very nlcely now.

2013 Snowden Cabernet Franc Melchior Kemper USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting visit with Randy Snowden at the ranch. Tasted alongside the Merlot and Petit Verdot. I am a cab franc fan and this was delightful. A balance between old and new world styles - elegant and flavorful. Would have been happy to sit with a glass and watch it evolve. Highly recommend.

2014 Snowden Petit Verdot Levi Philander Davis Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting visit with Randy Snowden at the ranch. Tasted alongside the Merlot and Cab Franc while overlooking the vineyard where the grapes are grown. I have not tasted a lot of 100% PV wines, so I found this super interesting. It was a really pretty wine, floral on the nose, dark in color but lighter on the palate than it looked like it would taste. Kind of cool and different. Also who could not think that Levi Philander Davis is not the coolest name ever??? The vineyard is named for the original homesteader of the property - under the Homestead Act of 1862:-)

2015 Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon Los Ricos Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting visit with Randy Snowden at the ranch. Our third location for the tasting visit - overlooking the Los Ricos vineyard - named by the vineyard manager due to its location next to "The Rich" neighbors. This was hands down by wine of a very enjoyable tasting - just delicious. This was an elegant yet full bodied expression of Napa Cab with a super long finish. Ready and open for business now, but I bet it will be even more delightful in 10 years.

2015 Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon Brothers Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting visit with Randy Snowden at the ranch. Tasted side by side with the Los Ricos, this was not quite as open and I think it would benefit from additional cellar time before opening. The structure is there along with beautiful dark fruit, but needs some time to resolve the tannins. Would love to revisit in 5 years.

Tasting visit with the Snowden Family at the ranch. Poured from magnum over dinner. Fully mature and showing beautifully. Mature dark fruit, cedar and forest floor with a well rounded mouthfeel.

Flight 5 - 2017 - 10th Annual NVGG Harvest STOMP (6 notes)

The main event that brings the group together every year and quite possibly the funnest event we have ever attended. This year for its 10th Anniversary STOMP was held at Round Pond Estate in Rutherford. The event always begins with a two hour cocktail hour - with various pouring stations that switch at the hour mark and a whole variety of food booths mixed in. The participants are all dress in western style, cowboy boots & hats are standard attire. This year the cocktail hour was held in the old pole barn at the Estate. The only complication was the weather - the temperature hit 107 degrees at 5pm the start of the event - YIKES! Given the temps I only sampled 3 wines during cocktail hour and kept hydrating with tons of water. 600 people in cowboy hats in the heat - together inside the barn - pretty hot. Once the sun got lower, temps dropped and we moved to the tables set up among the vines for a seated dinner and live auction. After dinner a band and dancing to the wee hours in the pole barn. A very successful auction this year with just under $2 million dollars raised for the organization.

Red
2014 Herb Lamb Cabernet Sauvignon HL USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted at the NVGG Harvest STOMP party - Jennifer Lamb was pouring during the first hour. Despite the 107 degree temp in Rutherford, I could not resist the HL. Beautiful dark fruits, some mocha, tannins are present so will definitely improve with cellar time. A lovely structured Napa cab from mountain fruit.

2014 Ovid Red Wine USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted at the NVGG Harvest STOMP - the Ovid team had a pouring station during cocktail hour. Dark fruits, elegant, touch of cedar and dark chocolate. Small pour but always delicious.

2014 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
Tasted at the NVGG Harvest STOMP. One of my favorite napa producers and a wine that ages beautifully. This vintage was no exception with a balanced and elegant cab that sits somewhere in the middle of new and old world. Elegant and satisfying despite the crushing heat wave.

2009 Harlan Estate The Maiden USA, California, Napa Valley
Served with dinner at the NVGG Harvest STOMP. Paired with BBQ beef, cheese grits, corn salad and caprese salad. More mature than the wines we tried during the cocktail hour, so less primary in fruit comparatively but this is still a big wine. Very dark concentrated fruits, but well made with good structure and long finish.

2010 Opus One USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted with dinner at the NVGG Harvest STOMP. This needs some time to open up and would recommend some decanting (similar to previous experience). Initially a bit closed but starts to express itself at about the 45 minute mark. Dark fruits (blackberries and blueberries) with dark chocolate and a hint of mint and earth. Would love to try this after an hour or two in the decanter.

2009 Staglin Family Cabernet Sauvignon Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
Served with dinner at the NVGG Harvest STOMP. This was favorite of the wines served with dinner in very serious company. Just ready and open for business right from the get go. Dark fruits, velvety mouthfeel and a bit a savory quality that kept in fresh with a long finish. I have not had much experience with this brand, but based on this showing would love to explore these wines more fully.

Flight 6 - 1st Annual(?) Mutton & Mouton Dinner (5 notes)

An entire lamb was purchased at the local 4H auction and butchered in preparation for "Lamb all Day" celebration. The commenced with Lamb Sliders and Lamb Skewers for lunch. That evening a larger group of friends assembled for a Lamb Smorgasbord (Lamb Ribs, Lamb Souvlaki, Lamb Salt & Pepper Steaks, Lamb Chops, etc....etc...) with the featured wine being the '85 Mouton. Many more wines followed as we worked our way through the feast. The '85 Mouton was clearly WOTN for all of the participants.

Red
1985 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
WOTN for me and the first one tasted. The nose on this was very expressive with black berry, leather and earth. On the palate this was silky and well knit together with the dark fruits still juicy but strongly supported by supple tannins and dry leaves and baseball glove. Drinking beautifully now, paired with a lamb feast - from a whole lamb. Not much experience drinking first growths but this and the '88 I had this summer have really turned my head. Looking forward to this possibly new summer tradition of "Mutton and Mouton" dinner. Highly Recommend

1998 Antinori Solaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Following on the heels of the '85 Mouton, this was a really tough transition. Where that was all elegant and silky, this still seemed to have some ripping tannins and lots of black tar. It was popped and poured, so I suspect this would have benefited from a long decant - for a best showing. It softened up a bit in the glass with 30 minutes of air and started to reveal some dark fruits, but would not recommend a pop and pour on this one.

2004 Dominus Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
3rd in the lineup of wines and a transition back to elegance and restraint after the '98 Solaia. This was drinking well tonight on pop and pour. Subtle nose of red fruit and earth. On the palate, rides that nice line between old and new world, red fruits with a nice balance of acidity and earth that keep it well balanced. Some dusty tannins on the long finish. Elegant and lovely.

Red
1995 Les Fiefs de Lagrange France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
4th wine in the line-up tonight and definitely not a favorite for me. This had some screeching acidity on it without much fruit to balance it out. Very tight and withholding on the palate. First time with this wine so not sure if this is characteristic or perhaps a faulty bottle.

1995 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
5th and last of the wines tasted my me tonight. A well drinking mature bordeaux. Dark fruits with lots of leather and cigar box notes - medium finish.

Flight 7 - Assorted other wines tasted over the course of the week (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Always an elegant wine, the 2006 vintage did not disappoint. Very fine mousse, crisp and elegant with tart green apple, lemon zest and a just a hint of bread dough. I suspect I will enjoy this even more with another ten years of age when the flavors begin to take on a bit more depth, but highly enjoyable now as well.

Red
2011 Occidental Pinot Noir Cuvée Catherine Occidental Station USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
A big, bold new world styled Pinot Noir - very fruit forward and rich. Would not be surprised if perhaps some Syrah had been added to the blend as the color and flavor profile is dark. If your tastes run to richer styled pinots, this will be a wine for you - if you lean more AFWE, probably best to avoid.

White - Sparkling
2014 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs USA, California, North Coast
When you are hanging out at the pool and a little hungover - nothing like popping some tasty bubbly to while away the afternoon. The Schramsberg BdB is a great value bubbly, with lemony acidity and lively bubbles - perhaps a bit higher dosage than the typical entry level grower champagne - but very easy to drink as an aperitif sans food.
