Deg. July 2007. Still fresh with a fine acidity, but also very mature notes of coffee galore. Manly and concentrated champagne. GrandVin in da house.

Deg. August 2006. Very much like the 2007-version, just a bit further ahead. HSA, the nekrofile, found this too old, PB and I disagreed; still livelym rich with toast, coffee galore, very layered and deep. Time to drink this, though.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White
2016 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Juicy and fat; very rich, somewhat sweet, buttery almost decadent, layer upon layer – and yes, too much of a good thing is wonderful. On day 2 virtually unchanged, but seems to be moving I a more spicy (garrigue) and a bit less opulent direction. 95+

2015 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

In the beginning this accents the garrigue and minerality, very much the Rhône-quality, unlike the 2016, this very much gains weight and on day 3 after opening it is really showing off; minerals, precise acidity, citrus – and great length. Grand Vin. 95+

Some gras here, but also fine acidity and balance. Harmony and length, certainly, could be closing down, though, it is a bit shy already. 93+ point.

2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Colour is dark, changing towards mahogany. Rich meaty nose, vraiment Beaucastel. Sweet, animal, good spice. Soft, creamy, like the vintage, but acidity is fine. On day two still meaty and rich, powerful wine with backbone, very good example.

1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Precision and freshness here; quite vibrant, lively fruit, kirsch here galore, a wee bit of alcohol – not up to last showings, but not declining either – will try another one soon.

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark, roasted, rich like the vintage; still primary fruit, but just a wee bit of heat here (not pruny at all). A much stronger showing than last time in Gigondas. Later, on day 2, cooler in its showing, minerals arrive, still very balanced.

From PB. Friendly, round –and mature. Very fine neuf from a small vintage, still no signs of fatigue, not even on day 2. Bravo

From PB. A firm, vertical, mineral wine; like a lessor version of the 1981. Loads of character here, animal wine, a deep southern wine with cool elegance. Great. The surprise of the evening

The leanest of the lot; nice, round, mature, good balance, quite fresh, but in this company, it seems just a little bit short, yet a very fine showing – for the vintage, not least. #Auction wine.

Very round and harmonious, very 1990, performing effortlessly. Complete wine in complete balance, generous, without showing off. My WOTN. #Auction wine.

Had this from MG eight years ago, and I remember it as more sauvage -
it has turned towards elegance. Lovely, elegant wine – in complete harmony; an almost Burgundian feel here, both sous bois and meat, yet the elegance prevails, this is en danseuse, light on it’s feet. Complete. # Auction wine.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Marcel Deiss Pinot Gris Altenberg de Bergheim Sélection de Grains Nobles France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
97 points
Coffee, toast, minerals, a deep canned fruit; hors classe, layers upon layers. Cork is terrible as usual with Deiss (never fails with the older bottles), but the wine … oh dear. Will keep, no effort.
