Acker Auction - May 2019

Zuma in NYC

Tasted May 15, 2019 by MC2 Wines with 329 views

Introduction

Standard Wednesday night auction. It's true that the food at Zuma doesn't quite match with red wines, but I do find the space pretty and pleasant. This time around they were decked out with cherry blossoms in honor of the season.

Flight 1 (34 notes)

White
2004 Sine Qua Non The Rejuvenators USA, California
Interesting to try one of these with a bit more age. I remember the whites mostly being mouth coating, but this stayed away from being quite that intense. It's an interesting wine. Tons of different flavor profiles competing against each other here. Lots of light honey and floral and white peach and all of that. It's balanced. More intense than not (interesting because I usually think of Chave blanc as intense but compared to this it was practically airy). Still, enjoyable.
White
2002 Sine Qua Non Whisperin' E USA, California, Central Coast
This was perhaps even more fresh than the 2004 which was interesting. Lots of citrus notes. Predominantly lime. I think that gave the feel of the acidity and balance to it. In a great spot right now although I don't think it's going anywhere that quickly.
Red
1986 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
I don't always "get" the La Mission, but this here was a very nice wine and of the three bordeauxs seemed to be in the prime drinking window. It's all savory at this point - no fruit really to speak of. Tons of truffle which I ove. Some more herbal side. And this odd like green fern type of note. I happen to enjoy a touch of green in a wine as long as well balanced and this was that. Very tasty.
Red
1970 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Hard to know exactly what was going on with this wine. My impression was prob over the hill, but it could also just have been in an 'off' period. It starts off really quite ok up until the finish and then the first sip had this weird bitter note to it that dominated and left a less positive impression. With a bit of air that sharpness in the finished seemed to mute down and so it ends up being more of the savory bordeaux character. Perhaps not as exciting and vibrant as some wines, but enjoyable and drinkable.
Red
1982 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Oh my - all sorts of chocolate and cacao bean and all of that jazz. It's velvety in nature. Also more savory. Soy and tobacco. And then that chocolate/cacao again. Drinking well. Missing some of the brightness from the La Mission '86 in the same flight.
Red
2002 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche Cuvée Auguste France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
My only foray into the Burgundy table although I'll agree that it was enjoyable. If you are willing to spend large sums on burgundy turns out there are some great wines. This is a very dark red fruit - more like a currant or a fleshy red plum. Some spice and a hint of the woodsy. Tasty.
Red
2000 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Still quite young and drinking as such. There's a hint of the oak here that is impacting my impression of the wine. It's also got a touch more alcohol than I'd like to see. I think though it's more needs some time to pull together. If you believe the 20 year theory of LaLa's (that each LaLa needs at least 20 years) and I do, than this one still has at least one more to go. There is a certain softness and 'prettiness' to the wines. I had started as a La Turque fan but I'll say the softness in the La Mouline can be quite compelling.
Red
1990 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Interesting disparity between the nose and the tongue. This smelled almost a bit over the hill and yet it was quite bright and happy. Get some very refined fruit which is just the right balance of sweet but not overly so. Perhaps the nose was picking up on the end of palate where it was a bit more tired.
Red
1988 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Cicala Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Probably the wine of the early tasting. This was just awesome. It's a nice blend between fruit and spice. The spices got a bit more exotic after some air. Really enjoyable.
Red
2010 Sine Qua Non Syrah Five Shooter USA, California, Central Coast
The first of three wines where the most apt descriptor has to be 'rocket fuel'. This is not for the faint of heart. It coats the tongue and the palate and it's hard to imagine being able to fully appreciate some of the wines that came before this as well after this. It's lots of fruit. Fruit loops springs to mind. Sweet. There is something that doesn't seem quite right though - usually I think of SQNs as truly vibrant wines that just sing out of the glass at you and that wasn't the case here. Perhaps in a more muted or dumb phase?

2014 Sine Qua Non Grenache Testa dei Cherubini Eleven Confessions Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast
I tend to think that while the Syrahs are good, the Grenaches are really the showstoppers for SQN. This has some nice stuffing. It is in the rocket fuel line-up and it is definitely rocketful. The kindof wine that reminds me of my five year old self who loved candy (I mean the stuff that's pure sugar, not some random chocolate bar). There's that whole hedonistic appeal to it. I think it needs a lot of time to calm down and find itself. I hope it does.

2009 Sine Qua Non Syrah This is Not An Exit Eleven Confessions Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
Part III of the rocket fuel series. This is again quite intense. Amazing to think it's 10 years old - you can't tell the age here at all. It's got darker fruits and spice and a lot of intensity. Here again I hope that with some time it will start to mellow out a bit and then all of the crazy flavors that make it so interesting will be a bit more in balance.
White
2007 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
From a magnum. Funny how what you drink around a wine can influence your impressions so much. This was surrounded by a bunch of SQNs and so while I typically think of Chave Blanc as waxy and a mouthful this came across as almost light and delicate in comparison. It's lots of white flowers but in just a bit in that signature vanilla bean is there in full force. The vanilla is mouth coating even if the wine doesn't come across as so. Tasty enough.

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. L. Aubry Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
I am more and more getting to the point where I believe there should be bubbles with any outing and so these were the bubbles. A nice palate cleaser after the SQN. Unlike the previous note I got lots of red fruits- mostly cranberry. A hint of the sweet and sour. Very easy and great for the price.

White
2000 Lur-Saluces "Y" France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur
I always like this wine. It's exactly what you would picture a dry d'yquem tasting like. Really beautiful. Nice acidity. Lots of flowers. Easy wine. I like it.

1982 Château Beychevelle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
If I had to only pick one flavor in wine I might go for having a spice cabinet. There's something just very compelling about wines with those notes. That was this wine to a 't'. It's incredibly fresh and drinking super well. One of my favorites of the day.
Red
1971 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Prob the oldest wine from this estate that I've had. I think it might have been a bit off. Certainly came across as a bit older and more tired. Lots of bricking and more of a dull brown color. Pity.
Red
1970 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Not the best vintage of Margaux, but I really liked this. The classic more velvety notes. Red fruits. Potpourri. Certain elegance to it. It's a touch more faded than I think one usually gets, but still very enjoyable. One of my favorites of the day.

1961 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Much fresher than you would think for a wine that is 58 years old. I'd say it's still a bit more savory and a bit less fruit which seems to have faded down if there was any, but the energy in the wine is impressive. I thought it was enjoyable, but was also surrounded by a lot of pretty amazing wines.
Red
N.V. Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Reserva Especial 1991, 1994, 1998 (2011 Release) Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Another favorite. It's still on the younger side but the blends seem to make it more approachable than similarly aged unicos. Just a hint of the oak. Lots of dark red fruits. Lots of pepper and spiciness. Just a bit tight and while it opened some over the course of the night didn't quite get there. Needs some more years, but going to be special.
Red
1973 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Just kept on improving throughout the course of the evening. This started off a bit musty and a bit 'old' but as it got more air it got a bit more body and this nice blend of fruit and leather polish which doesn't sound delicious, but def worked.
Red
1986 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Valbuena 3° Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Enjoyable. Love some good age on a wine and this definitely seemed to do well with it. Nice currant, a certain vibrancy. And this kindof delicious undertone. Only knock is the finish was a bit quick.
White - Sparkling
1995 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
This wine is just oh so young. it is crisp and fresh and tasty but also a bit higher on the acid side and feels like it needs a bit of time to settle into itself. Might recommend giving it a bit of time open if serving now.

1971 Aurelio Settimo Barolo Riserva Rocche Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Nicely aged. Pours a touch cloudy and continues to be more of an almost brown-gray color in the glass. A bit lighter in style. Nice.
White - Sparkling
1985 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame France, Champagne
This was just plan awesome. Vanilla bean, a hint of oxidation, a bit of toast. It's in a perfect drinking window and just great.
Red
2005 AR.PE.PE. Valtellina Superiore - Sassella Riserva Vigna Regina Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore - Sassella
From a magnum. Overshadowed by a lot of the other wines at the event. It's red fruits and a touch herbal but in a fairly basic package.
Red
1988 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
I really liked this one. It's all spice cabinet and fun and drinking pretty young and tasty. I was surprised at how much depth seemed to be in the wine given the price point. Enjoyable and pretty wine.
Red
2015 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This wine is just straight up young right now and in a line-up of wines with age that stands out quite a bit. It's intense. Lots of bright fruits. Bit of tannin. Bit more intensity, but suspect it will calm down with some time.

1997 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Definitely got swayed the wrong way on this. Did think it was Pinot, but I was thinking more new world (maybe Cali). It's got lots of red fruits, balanced, but more forward. I also thought it was a bit on the younger side. Would not have guessed 22 years of age. The drinking window of 2014 is off here.
White - Off-dry
1983 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Brought by a friend to be a wine that pairs a bit better with Zuma fare. And that was true. It was nice and fresh. Sometimes I react to the petrol in old rieslings, but that wasn't true here at all. Very nice and lightly sweet and tasty.
Red
1994 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
From a magnum. Drinking well. Lots of black fruits and very bright. Bit of herbs in the mid-palate. Very nice.
Red
2015 Sine Qua Non Grenache Le Chemin Vers L'Heresie USA, California, Central Coast
This needs a lot of time to integrate. Drinking younger than most things we had today. It's lots of red and almost candied fruit. Lower acid. More mouth coating. Lots of vanilla and oak. Will hold our bottle and try to let it all pull together.
Red
2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Poker Face USA, California, Central Coast
I do like these with age and would even say this one is still pretty young. It's a bit more refined though than its peers. Lots of blackberry jam and chocolate and spice and maybe even a touch of fir or evergreen notes. It's tasty. If we had a bottle though I'd be waiting another 10+ years.
Red
2012 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
Another NYC restaurant wine list at a very reasonable price and so we were off to the races. I think I might have drunk most of the bottle. I just love these wines. There's a great precision to them. The acid cuts a line and keeps it all in balance. Then there's a bit of the almost green twiggy flavor. Which I like. And some darker fruits. I would love to age one of them to see how that works (suspect it would be divine), but they are very drinkable young as well even if it is baby killing.

Closing

We left a bit early so missed some of the wines I think. Not sure if I have a definite WOTN although there were a lot of good ones. The '88 Calon Segur for some reason is standing out to me. I also loved the Margaux and it makes me think I need to be buying more of that.
