Flight 1 (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2015 Agrapart Champagne Grand Cru Vénus Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
I'm not really a champagne guy but this was quite impressive. Cut and focused on the palate but quite expansive with some brioche and golden fruit on the finish. Good staff. only small pour and the bottle was killed.
White
2017 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

More of a white fruit profile with hints of apricots subtly in the background. Viscus lush mouth feel, quite deep with lengthy finish. Better when quite cold as it seems to add some cut.
White
2017 Les Vins de Vienne Condrieu La Chambée France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
94 points
I thought this was terrific. Explosive ripe golden fruit profile with chalky stone notes underneath. Rather viscous mouthfeel when warmer--but doesn't lose depth. Another wine that was better when quite cool.

Flight 2 (23 notes)

2018 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie Les Journaries / Maestria France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Tasted immediately after opening with plans to consume the following night. Lovely floral character with a distinctive violet profile on the nose. Really surprising how expressive and delicate the nose is. Palate was dense, angular and somewhat standoffish. Heavy tannins. Not particularly enjoyable. Hopefully will improve on night 2.
Night 2 this was awesome with food. Fantastic nose but the palate was open giving some clues to the future with a black and violet core. Still quite tannic with a coarse mouthfeel.

A fun wine not in my typical preferred style. Flamboyant and polished but impeccably balanced. Hides the high alcohol very well though there's a little heat on the very long finish. Darker fruit profile, with subtle interwoven pepper and grilled meat notes. Powerful, yet polished and lush, with an incredibly long finish, and impressive depth.

2019 Llano Estacado Shiraz Signature Series USA, Texas

Fat on the palate but still a bit angular. Mostly grapey plummy fruit. Fine drink but not thrilling. Lacks structure and complexity. With air this balanced some, but not sure I get a varietally distinct expression, just more focused lush red and purple fruits and subtle fine pepper notes on the finish.

1975 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

This bottle was low neck. Considerable bricking. Aged and tertiary, with plum and tobacco notes with a fine herbal character at its core. Some iron/metallic notes on the nose and palate. Shows the lush fat palate of older Pomerol. It’s elegant and nuanced and lovely—though this bottle was clearly on the down slope.

1979 Château Certan de May France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

High shoulder fill. Perfectly aged 43yo Pomerol. Still quite vibrant. Cedar and leather notes with tertiary fruit. Fully integrated tannins. Moderate finish. Solid for the vintage.
Later on in the evening was still showing wonderfully. Mostly about the nose which was elegant and aromatic, with mushroom and sous bois notes much with saddle leather. Really terrific old bdx.

Unfortunately I think this saw some heat at some point. Brownish fruit and muddled profile. Tired for its age. Not correct.

2016 Chapelle St. Theodoric Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Guigasse France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Had a little reduction at first but beautiful core of red fruits with a taught focused palate. Tensile and vibrant if still quite young. Lovely baking spice character.
I really like the style here. Restrained, elegant, focused, structured.

Never really came around. Was cloudy. Tart profile with a distinct orange rind note. Didn't seem correct.

2011 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Small pour, but this was distinctive with an elegant expressive nose and powerful palate and finish. Has a nice mix of smoke and tar notes mixed with white flower notes. Fine tannins that seems mostly integrated. To me this was balanced and seamless, implying some maturity but could likely hold for decade plus given the pedigree and balance. Went fast in a competitive lineup

2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Better than I expected given my prior experience with the '07 vintage. Still shows some heat but hides it well with is a sexy, polished wine with considerable depth and nice spice notes. only had a small pour.

2007 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Maybe aging better than I initially expected, but still not my thing. Still hit and bit unbalanced. Shows a dark fruit and spice note and lack some lift--but there's considerable depth here with the dark concentrated fruit. Heat mars the finish.

This was fantastic with a explosive black pepper and grilled meat nose and bright refreshing palate. Not too heavy. In a great spot.

2017 Nicolas Champagneux Côte-Rôtie Les Grandes Places France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

New wine and producer for me. This is dense and concentrated, and has a little lavish oak influence on the nose. Palate is rather smooth and lush, quite smooth with more olive and spice than pepper. Grilled meat note on the lengthy finish where some back pepper notes pop through.

2018 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Awesome young wine. Quite balanced despite the difficult vintage. Black fruits with violet highlights. Smokey and maybe a bit reductive?. Palate is quite coarse and even austere on the finish, showing considerable tannins. Still, depth and complexity balances the structure. Needs sometime for sure.
On night 2 this was still rather dark fruited and sullen, with a smoky character. Needs time.

I liked this quite a bit tonight. Spicey and smokey, with plenty of lift. Tannins mostly resolved at this point.

Not as balanced as Griffin's Lair. This was a little hot. Great expressive nose of red and blue berry notes mixed with smoke notes. Plate a little lean and thin, with austerity coming through on the back end.

2005 Delas Frères Hermitage Les Bessards France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Still has some oak note to integrate. Darker riper fruit profile but has a floral lift on the palate giving this some energy. Sandy rather coarse tannins on the finish. Thought this would be better given pedigree. 92
Really fell apart on night 2 showing heat and angular thin fruit and notable oak influence. Seemed over extracted. Lost 2 points.

Less intense and lush than prior vintages. Love the focus and lifted on the nose as this shows persistent white pepper and violet notes. Palate is a bit thin and lacking fullness--but is still quite fresh and lifted. Great energy Maybe will fill out with time. Nice food driven wine.

This was lovely. Black fruit with pepper and olive notes and mostly integrated tannins. Seemingly in a great spot but has the energy of a young wine.

2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Had many times before but not in almost 10yrs. Still a powerful ripe wine with a black fruited profile. Seems a little thin now and showing it's alcohol but still has a terrific core of spice notes and kirsch. Lengthy finish.
Surprisingly held up well on night 2. I may have underestimated this.

Closed nose. Seems rather off putting, with some olive and meat notes but otherwise limited accessibility on the palate. Didn't care for this--maybe better on night 2.
Not really better on night 2. I think this may have been spoiled by Brett or some similar spoiling organism.

2012 Cayuse Wallah Wallah Special #4 USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

From magnum. Intoxicating nose of barnyard funk, rocks, horse and dark fruit profile. Finely integrated tannins that are present, but subtle, giving this a silky inviting mouthfeel. Finishes with white pepper and spice notes with some tannins coming through. Better with several hours air--funk was almost off-putting initially.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1986 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Light golden color. Slightly cloying but there a nice spine of acidity underneath the voluminous palate. Finishes bright and refreshing. More of an apricot and white flower profile.
