Commanderie de Bordeaux MN: First Growths at Demi

Demi, Mpls

Tasted May 19, 2023 by rocknroller with 96 views

Introduction

This was a very special tasting of the Minnesota Chapter of the Commanderie de Bordeaux. Gavin Kaysen's wonderful restaurant, Demi, was the destination for this bought out second seating, sold out event with just 20 coveted seats available in the restaurant. The ambitious and delightful tasting menu was masterfully paired by the organizing commitee to showcase a remarkable and memorable flight of First Growth Bordeaux. This was great, great evening that will be talked about for years to come. Well done everyone. Toujours Bordeaux!

Light gold color. Drank a glass from magnum over 45 minutes. This was amazing tonight, it just totally pops out of the glass and on the palate - wow!. Apple, apricot, saline, beeswax, with the palate showing more lemon, lemon peel, and pear; lovely and precise, stones and saline. Super bottle, getting a little mag bump too. Thanks Brad! 96+ to 97pts.

Very dark red color. Double decanted and corked, drank a glass 4 hours later. Cigar, dried earth, green wood, a little creosote, cassis on the nose. The palate shows layers of cassis, spice, cigar, lacquer, and anise. Not as good as a bottle a year ago; it didn't really seem to improve much in glass, and maybe it was just a bit off.

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. Sem54%, SauvB46%. Wow, simply explosive, gorgeous tropical fruits, so fresh and bright, mandarin orange, passion fruit, mango, Meyer lemon, white flowers, sweet Meyer lemon panna cotta, Butter-cream, Chantilly cream, dry stones, incredible energy and intensity. Wow - a total stunner.

Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. There's a lot going on here, with baked apple, Grand Marnier liqueur, slate and caramelized aromas on the nose. The palate offers up baked apple, sweet gold fruits, minerals, butterscotch, lanolin, citrus oil, with hints of iodine and a finish of citrusy bitters. Excellent - but I'll hang my hat on the ethereal 2010 tonight versus the aged nuances of the '85. 92+ to 93pts.

Medium bricked red color. Double decanted and recorked about 3 hours before drinking. Drank a glass over an hour. There doesn't seem to be a lot of love for the '71 on CT, but I will tell you that probably means you haven't been blessed with the kind of pristine bottles that we were. Coming from an old, cold cellar, the bottles from this case have, by all accounts, been stellar. This simply has a glorious perfume of pretty ripe strawberries and wild flowers, cigar wrapper and subtle dill weed. The palate is light-medium bodied, more like an aged Burgundy. It shows a that same red strawberry fruit, pure and penetrating, rich in flavor, thought light in weight, blood orange, subtle dill, cigar, resolved tannins and a long red berry finish. Some will argue that this is too light or thin, but this elegant, aged Bordeaux is simply divine. 94+ to 95pts, maybe better, just a joy to sip and savor. Thanks Chris & Jenna.

Very dark red/purple color with a 2mm clear margin. Double decanted and recorked, served about 3 hours later. Drank a glass over an hour. For me, this checked all the boxes tonight even with only a very modest amount of air. A wow nose, this has it all going - quintessential Bordeaux; intense with pencil, cigar, violets and purple flowers abound, cassis with blue fruit nuances, lifted and vibrant. The palate is mesmerizing as it reflects the nose in its purity and focus, so harmonious and balanced, this is so silky with its layers of gorgeous deep black raspberry, cassis, and boysenberry followed by the floral tones, bold pencil and cigar notes as this lingers on for easily 90+ seconds. This is wonderful, yet still amazingly youthful tonight at 31 years. This has certainly got a long life ahead of it and i fully expect to exceed itself in the future. My WOTN. 98(+)pts.

Very dark red color with a 5mm transitional margin. Double decanted and recorked, served 4.5 hours later. Drank a glass over an hour. And in the continuing vein of outstanding vintages, the '89 Latour also is remarkable in its juxtaposition of youthfulness and panache. Deep, deep layers of cassis, creme de cassis, blackberry compote, deep mineral notes, spice and such polished tannins, savory and concentrated. This wine is not ready to reveal itself fully tonight while showing brilliant flashes at times. 94+ to 95pts.

Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and recorked, poured about 6.5 hours later. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. It's been about 7 years since I had this, so i was really looking forward to it. This just oozes purity and intensity as it explodes on the nose and palate; offering such pretty black and subtle blue fruits; cassis and black raspberries, scorched earth, dried herbs, cedar box, and savory notes. The palate is deep, concentrated and layered with gorgeous cassis and ripe wild forest berries; blackberry, wild raspberry, mulberry, savory, wood spice, plum, cedar, and round welcoming tannins on a crazy long, intense finish. This is pretty primary at this point, but the balance and purity are unmistakable with more nuance waiting in the wings, albeit a perhaps longer wait for that. I love it, a head turning, sensous wine that may last forever.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes plus. As always a wonderful nectar of orange marmalade, honey and cardamom, botrytis, grilled pineapple, apricots, toasted cocnut, rich but lifted and long. This bottle was youthful in color with that character showing beautifully tonight at 34 years. 94+ to 95pts.
