50th Birthday Bash

Tasted December 1, 2023 by Francophile1 with 103 views

Introduction

A wonderful night of drinking history in a bottle with great friends at a wonderful venue paired with 8 delicious food courses followed by late night cellar diving.

Flight 1 - Food Courses 1- 4 (prior to the Latour vertical) (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
1995 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Wonderfully aged vintage brut. Full bodied, slightly oxidized due to age, and a fine long finish. Drink up. Probably won't get much better with age.

White - Sparkling
1996 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
An absolute treat to taste this side by side with the '95 Krug. This is in stark contrast to the Krug since it is a Blanc de Blancs. Incredible freshness and acidity with an almost creamy texture and tiny, TINY bubbles. Loved it.

White
2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet Domaine France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
This is probably one of the best bottles of white wine I have ever tasted. Amongst the line-up of wines we had tonight, this stood out as one of the tops. So much so that I saved a 2 oz. pour to revisit throughout the night. Equal parts incredible nose and lengthy finish. So Great!
Red
1996 Domaine Henri Rebourseau Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
This was a great comparison next to the Mugneret-Gibourg in that the Rebourseau was built in the more classic masculine style of Clos Vougeot. Incredible layers of black cherry fruit laced with undertones of damp earth & soil. I enjoyed this much better than I did when I had it back in 2019.

2015 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
In contrast to the more classic Vougeot from Rebourseau, the Mugneret-Gibourg Vougeot was borderline exotic and sexy. Bright red and vibrant fruit fills the glass. I could sit and smell this wine all night long. Incredible length and purity. In 20 years, this will be a showstopper once it puts on some secondary notes. Wow!
White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
This has everything I love about mature Yquem! The classic pairing with Foie Gras made it a wonderful tasting experience. We saved some of the 750ml of the Yquem for the end of the night with our dessert course. Delicious!

Flight 2 - 10 Vintages of Chateau Latour (10 notes)

Red
1945 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: Starting with 1945. My mind is blown! This has got to be one of my top 5 wine tasting experiences in my lifetime. This bottle of 1945 Latour was sublime. A beautiful bottle with VHS fill and solid provenance. This was amazingly youthful vs. what I was expecting it to be. It looked almost like a Red Burgundy, but there was no bricking. The fruit was still fresh but it had the most glorious nose. The group agreed the herb on the finish was most definitely rosemary. The WWII victory vintage did not disappoint. Utterly awesome!
Red
1955 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: This bottle ranked #3 as Latour of the night only behind the '45 and '82. Another perfect expression of a fully mature Latour from a solid vintage. This 10 year vertical experience demonstrates that Chateau Latour is one of the most long lived wines from Bordeaux. The 1955 was still so vibrant.

1959 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: The only corked wine in the bunch. Thankfully, I've had this vintage of Latour before and when it is on, it is ON. Just not tonight.
Red
1966 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: This is definitely the 2nd best vintage of Latour in the decade of the 60's. This was my third time tasting this vintage and I enjoy it each time I drink it. While fully mature, it drinks like a 30 year old bottle of Bordeaux. Consistently great and somewhat affordable if you put it up against other older vintages of Latour.
Red
1971 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: Another great value vintage of Latour. Only the second time tasting this vintage, but it is really delicious. Fully mature and slightly lighter bodied than the '66. However, it is one of my favorite vintages of Latour from the decade of the '70s. Still has years left should you decide to hold it, but why do that when it is drinking so good now?
Red
1973 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: Of the 10 vintages, this was the weakest of the 10 bottles (which is what I expected due to the vintage quality). This is still enjoyable and has fruit, but it is on the downward slide. A touch of soy on the finish. We had to include it since it was a 50th birthday bash.

1982 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: This bottle was certified ex-Chateau release and released in 2022. Therefore, it had perfect provenance. This was clearly my #2 WOTN only behind the 1945. Unbelievable nose of utter goodness. This tastes like a 10 year old Latour, not a 40 year old Latour. It is a tightly wound ball of energy that explodes in the glass all the way through the persistent veracious finish. My fourth time tasting this vintage of Latour and thankfully 2nd time this year alone. This is a wine for the ages.

1989 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: It was so fun to taste this next to the 1990 vintage. While this is a softer & more elegant version, it is a wonderfully made vintage of Chateau Latour. More mature than the 1982 (which came just before it) and also more nuanced. While I love the power of the '90 vintage, I would almost give the edge to the '89, especially since you can acquire it for $300 - $400 less.

1990 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: I love this vintage in Bordeaux and this vintage of Latour. My fourth time tasting the '90 vintage and thankfully twice in the past month. This has the power of the 1990 vintage but tasted less mature next to the '89 and to the older vintages that came before it (with the exception of the '82). I'm not sure which Latour from the decade of the '90s that I prefer more... '90 or '96? Only time will tell and it will be fun to taste these two vintages side by side in the next 10 years or so.

2002 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
10 Vintage Vertical of Latour: I was so looking forward to tasting this vintage as it has been regarded as the wine of the vintage for the average 2002 vintage. However, this vintage was the one bottle that was not like the other nine vintages that came before it tonight. What it had going against it was where it fell in the order of the line-up (palate fatigue) and its young age. All I can remember is that it was uber concentrated and wonderful, but less evolved in comparison. Bottom line? This is a great bottle of wine and don't open it for another 10 years minimum.

Flight 3 - Dessert & Cellar Diving (4 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Revisited this wine again but this time with Dried Cheery Sauce & Cinnamon Ice Cream instead of the delicious Foie Gras Terrine. While great, I prefer it coming earlier in the evening with Foie Gras.
Red
2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Late night cellar diving... full disclosure, this bottle came after 16 bottles of wine across six guys and a six hour dinner. That said, it was great. I was surprised how approachable it was and that it already had some bricking at the rim. Always a treat to drink regardless for when it shows up in the evening.
Red
2010 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Late night cellar diving... Ka-Boom! My palate and senses are officially alive again. One has to respect the style of this wine. It is so distinct, so consistent, and so not typical of CDP. I loved it!

2003 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Late night cellar diving. Full disclosure, this was bottle 19 of 19 and the last one of the evening. Therefore, not an analytical tasting note. Nevertheless, it is superb, full of fruit concentration and just beginning to show layers. Did not decant. Infanticide pop and pour.
