Three years since my last. No sign of aging in the color. Shy on aromas. Similar notes of black currant and graphite. Still a little grip. Clean. The vintage shows in the short finish. Not quite as good as the last bottle. This was a relative bit of a disappointment. 88

10/25/23, 9:37 AM - Good question. I did give it about two hours in the glass while I was cooking and then enjoyed it over the next two hours. It didn't really move much or open up during that time.

10/25/23, 1:26 PM - It's seventeen years out. If you've got more than one left, I'd say pull a cork. I'm glad to be an enabler for you. I still have another left. Enjoy!

First bottle of three. No sign of aging in the dark color. Aromas of coffee and truffle. The entry was velvety and pillowy. Fantastic texture. This was marked by a big core of black currants accented by pencil and chocolate notes. Good length. Clean. This was in a really good place. This tilted a little modern in presentation. This was completely different than the 2001, which was completely classical, but equally remarkable. I preferred either to a very strict 1995 Latour, which was like getting wrapped on the knuckles with a ruler by a nun. 95

Paying attention on night two. Twenty-five years old, yet so young. Smells of a cauldron of stewing black fruit, clove and baking spice. A peacock's tail of flavors of raisin, fig paste, dark cherry, espresso and a distinct black licorice whip note. Finishes clean and in waves. Long. Draws you in for another sip. Demi-sweet. Medium body. This is in the beginning of a long, happy drinking window. Classic. 95

Re-tasted. Light cherry run through by piercing acidity and framed in green notes. A hair better than the undrinkable bottle from this February. Not flawed. Not good either. I loved my Burgs and this is the biggest section of my cellar, but I can’t polish this turd. If this was a U. S. Pinot tasted like this I’d really torch it, but I’m always soft on these. 80

9/9/22, 7:17 AM - I’m a big fan of this producer. I didn’t think this was balanced. About the green, I was super sensitive to the 2004s and I’ve found some unpleasant tones in the 2011s (like Bertheau’s Charmes). If I found all the 2008s to be like this, it might not be fair, but I’ve had excellent bottles from Dujac, Mugneret-Gibourg, Bouchard, Faiveley and others. This was a disappointment. I wanted to love it, trust me.

I hold and have tried many vintages from this Chateau, but this is the youngest I've quaffed. This bottle is at some variance from a bottle tasted last year. This isn't your father's Cantemerle. This came across quite charming and personable. I may say this was classic, but still nodded toward new world in a way. Still firm, but engaging with warm, smoky aromas. This wine was marked by black currant, saddle leather, green tobacco and slate. Plus finish that extended in waves. Round and broad with flavors in the mouth at the same time. Great vintage for them. 94

9/7/22, 5:31 AM - I thought it was in a good place and in it's drinking window. It's twelve years out and ready for enjoyment. I've still got a few bottles for down the road.

WOTV. Better than the very good Graham’s. No sign of age. Creamy entry. Fig paste, perfectly ripe blackberry and briar. Ballerina, pinpoint balance. No edges. No spirit. Long finish. This didn’t move over four days of nipping at it. A monument. 96

Sweet dark fruit. Closer to Syrah than Pinot. Lots of residual sugar. Ten years ago there was some vintage to vintage interest and flavor profile change. This has fans (my wife), but there is no vinosity here anymore, rather industrial recipe. The price should keep going down. You know what you are getting here, but so too at McDonalds. The difference between this and say Seghesio zin, is it doesn’t have distinctiveness. No flaws. This will have its fans. Rich and fruit forward. This it delivers. It can’t be outstanding for me. It can’t be better than the 2017 when it is the same. 86

Ruby color. Light, dusty aroma. Wet taste (like a trace of cucumber water), slate finish. Some astringency. Flat and clipped finish. It looks lovely, but I couldn’t find any fruit. Demi-sweet. I’m not into legs and usually don’t comment, but long and clinging so I’m supposing high alcohol. 79

10/6/20, 6:19 PM - You could be right. This wasn't out of my cellar, so I don't have a purchase note. It has been a while, but my guess/recollection is Total Wine. I only buy daily drinkers at two stores.

Deep purple. Nary a sign of age. Aromas of creme de cassis flecked with black pepper. Opens like a velvet rope in the VIP line. Spherical in the mouth with cassis, ripe blackberry juice, green tobacco and an encore of black pepper. Clinging finish. Swirling acidity seems to move the flavor profile around and accentuate it. Balanced. I couldn't ask for more from a wine. Spectacular! I have been wild about collecting and drinking fine wine for fourteen years. I can think of one better wine I've ever had and I underscored it in hind sight (gave it a 95, but with time and perspective, probably a 97). I've never scored a wine above 95. This moves the bar. 96

4/11/20, 7:20 AM - Thanks! I’m a fan of Stag’s Leap too. My CT note says I paid $90 for this. I recall the next vintage they moved the price to $120. So I drooped off. So unfortunately, no, I haven’t tried any other vintages. I can find lots of great Napa cab for $90 or less, so no regrets.

Decanted four hours. Still deeply colored. Cigar box aroma. Full entry. Pops with black currant, cigar box and spice. Nice balance. This still finishes with some grip. This has matured well since I tried it at Plumpjack. Miles to go. The first of my stash. 91

Open and followed for eight hours. Effusive black fruit aromas. Lovely. Classic crieme de cassis, lead pencil and cedar. The mouth feel is ridiculous - creamy and polished. This is so caressing. The down vintage shows in the finish length and flavor depth, but this is remarkable. 92
  • swade commented:

1/11/17, 7:36 AM - I have opened another since I posted this note - in July 2016. I followed the first one for a long time, but it did take a few hours to open up. If it were me, I'd probably give this 3-4 hours of air. I hope this helps and I hope you enjoy the wine.

Dark, stained cherry wood color. Nary a sign of age. Fragrant, foreshadowing the palate to follow. This opens with black cherry, sous bois (deconstructed in this case as earth, pine resin and moss) and spice. There is an interesting interplay between sweet and sour elements. Wine Spectator graded this a 93 blind against it's peers. This is in its early drinking window. The tannins are largely integrated; it's still endowed with fruit and its developing nicely. This 2005 won't bite, so treat yourself. 92

Plum color. Funk and herbal tea aromas. This enters with a bit of flat filminess. Dark cherry, grip, acid and bone dry. I don't expect the fruit will outlive the structure. Unbalanced. This needs food. Pass.

From my 62 degree passive cellar. Opened for four hours. Some bricking on the edge. Smells like horse sweat. Flat entry. Leather, funk and acid. No discernable fruit. Slightly shrill, tart finish. Below average for me. My wife liked it. Scored for average. 79
  • swade commented:

11/29/14, 7:02 AM - I considered marking it as flawed, but other notes referenced some of the same notes of leather and funk. Trust me, I wanted to love my own, long stored wine. It just wasn't a very good bottle. There are only good bottles as they say. Sometimes there are only bad bottles too.

I tracked this over 4.5 hours from pop to last drop. Limpid Christmas red color. Floral and cherry aromas. Airy, silky entry. This offers flavors of cherry juice, tart red raspberries and a nice, spice and sweet tart finish. Balanced. No green, astringency or under ripeness. This had good tension and energy. I kept thinking this tasted like a good Chambolle. This is a wine of finesse. 92
  • swade commented:

11/21/14, 12:22 PM - I enjoyed this from the minute it was unplugged. I tracked it for so long because I was concerned about the 2004 issue of the wines turning green with 30-45 minutes of air. The flavor profile was somewhat elusive over the span of consumption, but not really better or worse, just evolving, which I found interesting. - My first from MI. I did not know what to expect, nonetheless, I was impressed. I understand the winemaker is shooting for a finessed, non interventionist wine and I think that is reflected in this wine. I hope you enjoy it too.

Paired with roasted red garlic marinara sauce and fresh three cheese tortolini. Fresh bread and cheese. 3.5 hour decant. Pristine cork. Tawny rim to leather center color. Faint smell of potpourri. More body than most Nebbiolo I've tried, but still thinnish. Acidic entry. What little fruit there was to start quickly vanishes to leave a nearly flavorless filmy, acidic residue with a faint resemblance to acetone. Short finish just drops off a cliff. Yet I'm convinced this isn't flawed. The longer I worked this over and the more I focused on it after dinner, the more convinced I became that this just isn't very good. 79
  • swade commented:

10/31/14, 9:56 AM - It's my wine and was bought on release, trust me, I wanted to like it. I know these need some time (it's 10 years out), but with the fruit already gone, how does it get better? Wines die from the inside out and the heart of this particular bottle is on life support. I have another and if it's substantially better, I'll report. I probably won't hold on to it too long.

Glossy garnet color. Tiny bubbles on the bottom of the glass, without fizz. Cranberry sauce aromas, with some tart on the tail. Ripe entry. Monotone red fruit palate. Old world for sure, but this didn't taste like Chambolle and at this point the vintage overrides anything the terroir or producer may have to say. Tastes closed to me. I still think the 2009s will come out fine on the other side. 87
  • swade commented:

8/2/13, 1:48 PM - I enjoyed this bottle quite a bit. My wife even more. I'm tough grader and take the scale literally. In my last few notes I've give out a 79, 80 and an 84. This is drinking my own stash.

Burgundy is no bargain. I love them and sometimes I find I score them soft and I think, "To be honest, if this were a Napa cab, I'd trash this sourish thing." But I love them and the good ones, which I have more than the bad since I've stuck to certain producers, are more often the case. See my recent note on a 2008 Dujac Chambolle. I paid about $60 for it on sale and this H-N was $42. Not cheap, but the good ones take me to heights other regions don't let me visit. You're chasing the dragon in Burgundy.

I hope you enjoy yours when you get to it. Thanks for commenting.

This shows no signs of age in the color. Ebullient aromas of tomato leaf and wet garden soil come out to greet me. Dry entry. Little juice or fruit. Perhaps dried plums. Fanned with mushrooms trailed by tobacco. Sharp finish. Paired with grilled filet mignon. This was on edge all night. 89
  • swade commented:

7/3/13, 8:29 PM - Hi WS. Good question. Sorry, I usually comment on this. I let this breathe in the stem for three hours. Split with Mrs. Swade, I'm sipping the last sip another three hours later. Consistent over that span, and if anything, slightly more clenched and incrementally more dry here at the dregs. This has a patch of sediment at the neck. I hope this helps.

Inviting raspberry and fresh cut rhubarb aromas. Round entry, semi-sweet and über juicy. Red fruited from entry to end. This is layered with cherry juice, cranberry, with the tartness of the cranberry carrying through to the finish and seeming to wash over an undercurrent of salinity. There is a lingering, tart finish. No hard edges here. I found the mid palate fruit energetic and generous. 91
