Chateaux Canon and Rauzan-Segla with John Kolasa (Merchant Taylors' Hall, Threadneedle Street, London EC2): Open, youthful nose showing creamy red fruit, vanilla and a touch of florality. Lovely pure red fruit on the medium bodied palate, good persistency, lovely freshness. Kolasa suggested it would be 10-12 years before this was at its best. ****1/2

In great shape at age 15. Gorgeous dark ruby with a brilliant red rim. Nary a sign of age. Amazing viscosity as well, with big red legs. Excellent nose of iron, lead pencil, and mulberry. Wow! Super smooth, super sleek in the mouth, with medium body and richly fruited. This is one incredibly sexy wine, right at its peak of drink ability. All tannins are resolved, but nothing suggests any decline. Just a gorgeous, gorgeous wine. Finishes in a suave, sophisticated fashion. I haven't tasted many Bordeaux from this vintage, but this is certainly the best of the lot. 5-14-17-9: 95/100.

I’m done with Italian wines until we visit Italy again or someone teaches me! Very disappointed in this bottle. Medium red color. 30+ minute decant. Weak nose of cherry and cocoa. Very high in OH and is very light. No flavor whatsoever and zero finish. I don’t think it was flawed by any means; just poor. Back to French Bordeaux’s tomorrow!!

Purple-brown color showing signs that this bottle was over the hill.
Slightly plummy bouquet and flavor with somewhat unpleasant grilled meat notes in the finish. Fair balance but with little depth or nuance. Not much more to say.

My mind was blown!! As close as your getting to get to first growth at an insane price! PnP and reminded me of Haut Brion. Dusty, earthy, and smokey with some tar. Velvet on the palate with an insanely long finish. I’m speechless and in somewhat disbelief!!

This was the second bottle I tried from my OWC of 2000, of which I tended to conclude that the wine of this good vintage year might have gone under hibernation. When the bottle was first opened, it smelled more earthy & leathery than berries. Breathed for almost 3 hours before drinking. The nose had improved with more fruit character. Smooth tannins but fairly rich texture on palate, with ripe berries, spices & earthiness. After 5 hours being breathed in bottle, the nose picked up markedly with very elegant & fragrant berries, which resembled a matured Bordeaux red. Nevertheless, flavours deteriorated on palate with less fruit & more acidity. Decided to store longer to check if it will evolve.

Beautiful aromas on the nose with cherries, black currant, cedar and cigar box. On the palate it’s medium bodied and quite light in style. The tannins have almost entirely resolved in the wine, which result in a perfectly balanced wine. It probably lost some of its fruit, but it is still outstanding, with a fabulous finish. Absolutely recommended!

Blackberry, mocha, blackcurrant, oak, and a hint of flora (irises and violets). Medium+ acidity, medium+ body, medium+ smooth tannins, medium/medium+ finish. Very pretty on the front end, but this could have done with a bit more intensity and length towards the back palate.

Decant. Thick and concentrated with an almost black, inky color. Oak, ripe berries, tar, and cigar smoke on the nose with olive, raspberry, and mineral in the mouth. Very Northern Rhone in its balance, but showing some really nice fruit. A nice break from the textbook AU over the top, jammy style. Flawless texture with and intense finish that lingers on and on. This is why I love AU Shiraz. Hold for 2-4.

90 minute decant. Closed, alcohol nose that covers up the fruit. Decent but not a great vintage of this wine. Medium body and extraction and didn't really improve much over the next hour. I find a fair amount of bottle variation in this wine. Never wows me but is acceptable. Lots of berries, woody, spicy but muted.

Definitely high quality. If I had this blind I'm not sure I would guess Bordeaux, as it really resembles a high end Napa Cab or Blend. The nose and body aren't over powering, but are balanced and quite lovely. A little more umph would make this insane. Finish is medium to short. Very enjoyable wine!

This is a great Chard. Pop and pour. Full-bodied, complex Chard that is very smooth. Dominated by peach. Surprised that this has more oak than the Campbell Ranch because it does not show.

Second bottle of two. This one showed the same as the first. PnP at cellar temperature. Aromas of petrol and new sneakers, green pineapple, and lime pith. Thin mouthfeel and astringent acid complemented by acidic lime and pineapple flavors make this bracing in the mouth.

Perhaps a good foil to very oily foods, but not a particularly outstanding example of Finger Lakes Riesling. Perhaps better in a subsequent vintage, as the 2014s were somewhat variable. OK QPR at USD$14 from Saratoga Wine Exchange. "Very good," 86/100.

Celebrating the birth of our twins, Drew and Emma!!! Can't go crazy while helping feed the little ones every 3 hours, but a glass of this is a great change to 4 nights in the hospital.

Classic Matthiasson Napa Red Blend. Definitely give it a little air, but it is somewhat passed its prime in my mind. The nose is the best part, then the finish, but it is starting to run thin and losing fruit and tannins. Still a great wine!

Back to burp cloths and bottles of a different type :)
