2018 Carpineto Chianti Classico Riserva Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese
In Gino's opinion they have really up their game. Smells like quite a bit of wood here. Or aged wood. And then Sangiovese on the palate. So not really in harmony to me right now.

2/16/24, 1:07 PM - I am quite a bit surprised of your TN because I can't taste anything heavy in wood here. It is the opposite: Very fresh and very typical. Almost old-fashioned but in a good way.

Color: Light to medium yellow. Nose: Not much going on. Mouth: Fresh. Good expressiveness and length. There is a fruity component, like quince. Quite wishy-washy and a bit boring. It is good wine but overpriced. To me it should be sold by the bucket (5 L) for 40 $. Would be nice in the summer to drink cooled. I would drink it with head cheese and other rustic charcuterie. It would make a great party wine if it would be cheaper.

A private Cheval Blanc tasting (Bolomey Wine Imports, Amsterdam, NL): Not decanted. A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon, young vines on sandy soils. Designed to reflect a Loire style rather than Pessac-Léognan, fragrant and floral, subtle Sauvignon Blanc aromas, lovely balance, elegance and freshness, aged in various sizes of oak (including Stockinger demi-muid), nice fat on the palate from the lees stirring, barely any visible oak, very gentle bitters, excellent length. I really like it, and I would suggest drinking it young.
  • wineaficionado commented:

12/17/23, 4:50 PM - I would rather wait until the fat has gone. That is what I heard from vintners in the Alsaçe when they were talking about their white wines. And I wholeheartedly agree.

Color: Medium to deep ruby. Only slight signs of an aged wine. Nose: Soy sauce, raspberries, oranges. Mouth: Fresh, Finely grained tannins. Very good expressiveness and length. Some complexity. Can be stored even longer 5 yrs max

8/31/23, 12:41 PM - Hi WineGuyDelMar. I think " a big nothing burger" doesn't do this wine justice. It is a very good wine hence our scores. But is it outstanding? No. Will I remember it? No. To wait a bit longer may be worthwhile. At least, there is no downside in my opinion.

Color: Transparent ruby with an orange hue. Nose: Maggi/soy sauce. In the background red berries and oranges and some cherries are lurking. With aeration the fruit is getting more predominant. Mouth: Past its peak. Almost no fruit. Quite harsh and alcoholic, too. Diluted, too.

Color: Medium yellow with green reflexes. Nose: Botrytis, exotic fruits. Mouth: Quite viscous. Very concentrated. The sweetness is beautifully balanced by a vivid acidity. A fruity sourness that I adore. Exremely long. Honey in the finish. Even better 2 days after opening the bottle. Now there is a lemon aroma, too. It is a liquid lemon tart mixed with exotic fruits.

Color: Impenetrable almost black ruby. Nose: Spices and fruit. Mouth: Full bodied. Dark fruit like blackberries and cassis. Good length. The alcohol of 14.5% is fairly well hidden but still noticeable. You'll find better qpr in France including Bordeaux. Very good wine but it doesn't blow me away. It won't benefit from further cellaring.

Unfortunately my last bottle. It shows no signs of aging. I guess you could cellar it for another 5 years. But it is at its peak, now.
  • wineaficionado commented:

1/26/22, 2:25 PM - Hi srh, Yes, the 2016 isn't available anymore. At least not in the supermarket where I usually get it.

2/24/22, 10:36 AM - Hi macaujames, thanks for your kind comment. Unfortunately Germany is a bit far and there are so many good wines out there waiting to be discovered. When it comes to bargains I am especially fond of wines from Portugal and the South of France. Spain, too has a lot to offer for relatively low prices.

12/14/20, 3:04 PM - Hi Winebargainchaser, Yeah, if the wine isn't that good it isn't. I have given up on Parker and others for a long time. Many times I couldn't understand their scores. There are wines that are underwhelming at a certain point in time but will evolve. This wine isn't among them.

Tried my second bottle today, having found a big disconnect between my impressions of the first bottle and most other reviewers here.

And my initial views stand. With a 3 hour decant, this is a medium- acidity, medium- tannin, medium+ oak, very smooth, fruity, but rather uninteresting wine. Great party wine. Perhaps the epitome of Parkerisation for the American market.

I'd be buying more at US$12-15 for parties/BBQs, but at US$30 my money goes elsewhere.
  • wineaficionado commented:

11/7/20, 6:06 AM - Hi Paul. Yes, Before aeration my score was 78. I found the difference quite stunning. After several hours of aeration I liked the wine and before not. I'm still not a fan because of the spice aromas. It reminds me a bit of an after shave.

Wine was okay. I consider it a disappointment as I was expecting more. Not much nose and very light in mouth (not what I would expect from a Rioja) and it wasn't at all expressive!
  • wineaficionado commented:

Color: Deep and impenetrable. Almost black. Nose: Beef bouillon, wild berries, sour cream. Mouth: Full bodied wine. Nice grip from the tannins but not offensive at all. Just in the finish a hint of bitterness. Finish a tad short. Quite a muscular wine but it has some nice fruit to counterbalance. Fairly well hidden alcohol but still noticeable. The beef bouillon in the bouquet is too strong for me.
I liked the wine better the next day. Hence 2 points up. Perhaps it needs another year.
  • wineaficionado commented:

3/9/17, 1:40 PM - GAET, I assume it will be better in a year or two and will gain perhaps one more point in my book. However 89 points is already a very good score. But of course, there are better wines for the same price.

Color: Transparent ruby. Nose: Oranges, pomegranate. After a while of breathing the bouquet is leaning towards cherries, too. Decant the wine for 0.5 to 1 hour because at the beginning I also could smell some reductive notes. A rather delicate bouquet. Mouth: Nice freshness. Appetizing acidity. Not as tannic as other wines but they can still be felt. A lean and tight wine. Very elegant and off the mainstream.13.5% alc.

Color: Still very youthful. Only at the rim the color is a bit transparent and orangy. Nose: Spices, leather, cream, zest of bitter orange. Mouth: There is also a good amount of cherries. No signs of ageing aromawise either. Good length and expressiveness. Nice freshness and noticeable but fine tannins. Everything is in balance and harmony. Can be kept for another 5 years easily.

Nose: Dark berries, a hint of spice. Mouth: Consistent with the nose. Very good Bordeaux but disappointing considering the name and price tag. It lacks complexity and depth and is all in all not very interesting. The finish is a bit too watery. Also a bit too bitter. The alcohol is a bit too pronounced even though it has "only" 13.5%. It won't improve. Drink now or in the next couple of years.
  • wineaficionado commented:

1/25/16, 1:00 AM - daniel.jay, I was considering the same regarding bottle variation. If it was the case I would think of it as a major problem especially for such a prestigious winery. We have to wait for future notes and see.
