Wonderful wine. Bought at antinori and cellared for a year. Dried fruit and spices. Eucalyptus, mint and oak hints. Some greenish lumber from the cab franc. Nice tannin integrated. May benefit from a few more years of cellaring. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed.

What a pleasant surprise! Makes great Brunello, of course, but was curious about what a Cab from same area, produced by an innovative winemaker would taste like. It was delicious! Will buy more and hold a bit to see what it turns in to. I'm not a huge fan of Cali Cabs despite living here with unlimited access, but this tastes nothing like that.

A really great showing for a 1999 Napa wine, with obvious resemblance to a left bank Bordeaux. Strong whiff of earth, cocoa, and sweet cedar wood flowed by a dry wine, resembling an old Pauillac or St. Julien from a classic vintage. With more time, the wine showed the greener tobacco notes associated with a cool vintage cabernet or a heavy dose of Cabernet Franc. A real head turning experience from a california wine from an overlooked vintage. Strarted declining and showing hints of raisin after 2 hours...Still delicious and all ready to go. Dont miss if you have it. DRINK

Wonderfully classic bdm. Lots of fruit with sour cherry, and darker figgy flavors. Maybe a hint of tart blueberry. Medium tannins. Leather, tobacco, tuscan soil, hints of coffee and some balsamic notes. Some limestone as well on the back end. Paired with charcoal grilled ribeye. This is in a great spot and probably still ascending. It got best after 2 hours in decanter. Enjoyed thoroughly.

Clearly a blockbuster and a great wine. TBH I expected this to be more balanced now than it was before. Quite the opposite happened in the last 5 years…

Blind this is a California Bordeaux blend… ripe plums, blue and red berries, seamless tannins but noticeable alcohol. The latter is exactly the difference for the 3.5points less.

This is my last bottle but I actually doubt it will get better.

Drink now - 2033

Dinner w/Chris and Stephanie at Italian Cucina in New Hope (a fantastic corkage friendly place). Last tasting note on this was from 2015, bottles in my cellar from release. It was time to check in on this again, heeding the advice of other tasters, this got a 3 hour decant, rebottled to go to the restaurant. Significant sediment in this bottle.

Garnet/purple color, some thinning at the edges, sediment strained out in the decant. Nose was dark fruit, fig and balsamic. Plate repeats adding notes of blue fruit, black cherry, leather, baking spice. Tannins softened at this stage. Rich and viscous texture, fruits, fig notes go through the mid palate. Fruit displaying a sweetness through the finish. Full body, long finish.

This is in a perfect spot, hitting all the classic BdM notes. The fig and balsamic were really notable. I can't stress enough the importance of the decant. Tasting a splash when opened it was still tight, not showing the characteristics cited in the note (it would have been a 90 vs the 95 I am giving it). At 2 hours it was really showing, we drank after about 3 hours. Well stored bottles still have a way to go - but no reason not to drink this now!

Bottle looked rough but the wine was in perfect shape. Fruit was still strong, no signs of oxidation, with good balance, medium body, and lots of complexity with good length. Smoky and plummy like aged Rioja should be. Not a huge fan of American Oak - if this was aged in French oak I'd like it even more. Glad I have one more - easy hold for a few years.

Poured from a 375ml. Initially the wine hard a barnyard nose and seemed bretty. Mouth was dried red fruit (plums and cherries). With 30 minutes in a burgundy glass the nose opened up and a mature and deep CDP was revealed. I don’t think it’s at the end of its life, but I don’t think it’s getting any better, at least from a 375. I would drink up if you have any splits.

An enormously concentrated Umbria wine (in all its aspects: color, bouquet and taste), a selection of the estates best Sagrantino grapes (100 percent). The wine spent 24 months in French oak barrels, followed by a further 8 months refinement in the bottle before release. It boasts a dense black-inky color (almost impenetrable, no visible signs of aging) with glass-staining legs. The complex nose is brimming with aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, dark chocolate and some hints of nutmeg and leather. The wonderfully balanced palate shows an opulent but extremely elegant wine with loads of ripe plum and black forest fruit, great depth, significant but succulent tannins and an excellent acid structure. Magnificent aftertaste. Absolutely great yet and should continue to drink well for the next five to six years. It is recommended to decant the wine one hour before serving.

This is probably the worst high end wine I've ever had. First sips tasted like a cheap wine--lot of bell pepper, astringent, dark berry without the fruit, flavor profile all over the place. Tasted like the wine they serve on international flights in economy.

Wine got better over time, but pretty uneven. No terroir either. Imagine too young to open, but I've opened plenty of other young wines like this and they are always amazing.

Maybe it would've been better tomorrow or a few years from now, but I found it almost undrinkable.

The structure was very very lovely though.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I am not going to score this wine. It was so a-typical. The bottle had been tasted earlier with the Coravin and I don’t know if this has influenced the development of the wine. The wine had a very ripe and sweet bouquet with red berries and impressions of cocoa and oak. On the palate some sweetness and overripe impressions, full bodied, good length, round tannin and lush. I have a few bottles myself, so eventually there will be a tasting note from one of my own bottles, but that will not be on the short term.

But, I need to stop drinking it!
Gonna last at least a decade, and will soften or mellow for sure, as tannins resolve.

Almost a bday dinner (Chez Bruce, London): A magical wine and an arbitrage of a wine vs price ;and still so “young”.
We recently had the the joy of trying the beautiful 1990 Margaux ( Papies 99) and that too had this youthfulness and we feel this is a result of the austerity of their terroirs at a young age vs the more juicy St Julian’s which now feel like they are getting on the old side from this glorious vintage.
This is a spectacular bottle and frankly we should have decanted longer as the wine is indeed youthful still, bright fruit, still just turning secondary and a joy. This is the second bottle we try in the last 3 months from different batches ( Papies 98) and indeed one of those great experiences that remind us why we love the classical clarets so much. 97-98 and buy on sight wine.

91-93 potential range. When consumed now, it certainly stands out distinctly from the previous vintage, with a more austere tannin, a more floral bouquet, and still in a strong closure. These wines require patience, and I have no hesitation in describing them as great despite the truly incredible price for this level of quality. The color is pale, typical young Nebbiolo, with plenty of small, fresh, and tangy red fruits. The alcohol is present but never overpowering. The hints of mint and flowers (mainly roses and violets) are beautiful, distinguishing and elevating the drinkability and pleasantness of this wine. The tannin is still rather rough and impactful. It should be waited for at least 3-4 years before entering its phase of pure enjoyment. Outstanding persistence and acidity. Terroir and recognizability are the signature of this producer.

91-93 range potenzialmente.

A tannin bomb it was on the first evening. The wine had mellowed substantially on evening two. There was only a drop left on evening three, but not much had changed since evening two. It been nearly two years since the previous bottle, and I had to step back and give this some serious thought. James suckling has this as “pure and polished” @ 100 points; Wine Enthusiast said “Rich, hot, and heavy” @ 92 points. This bottle was definitely in the Suckling camp. To me, it was notable for what it wasn’t, instead of what it was. It was tannic for sure, but not overwhelming; it was not overly oaky or cedary; it was not over-ripe or raisiny; it was not green or herbal (as many Chilean bottles can be); it was not noticeably earthy or briary; it was not too sweet or too dry….nothing dominated, but everything I mentioned was in there, and more.Basically, it is a little bit of everything all in balance. In essence, this bottle of wine was flawless. I think maybe that was Sucklings whole point. This is IMO north of 95 points, wife loved it.

This is the best pure Merlot I’ve ever had, even surpassing the 2010 vintage.
I had expected this to be a lot more mature, jammy, and open than it was, but it was actually fairly fresh and tight. Upon opening it had a slightly metallic smell, and the tannins were still a bit firm, which fortunately blew off quickly in the decanter.

The wine showed a lovely bouquet of dark berries, purple plums, tobacco, and some je-ne-sais-quois charm. On the palate there was a carryover of cassis, plums, and some cedar, dusty tannins, and enough acidity to keep it fresh. The wine wasn’t jammy at all, and frankly I wish I’d saved it another year or three. Go ahead and open one if you have several, but if you only have one, and it’s been stored well, there’s no rush.

New Opportunities by the Sea; 6/7/2023-6/30/2023 (Alicante - España): More than ten years since previous bottle from this vintage. Till keeping that golden net, a sign of the greatness from the past. Capsule shattered into a thousand pieces when trying to remove it. Cork soaked and moldy. Another mission impossible for The Durand achieved (pictured). PnP. Clear orange colour with a ruby core and some aqueous edging. On the nose, after dissipating the obvious reduction, it retains that sweet touch of strawberries, wet leather, plowed earth, wild mushrooms, vegetable glycerine, furniture varnish, rusty apple, marzipan ... Endless complexity for a bottle that some would describe as old. On the palate it has a silky, elusive and watery texture. Tremendous acidity, still alive and kicking although volatile is already knocking at your doors. Finish fully digestive. I reaffirm, wine of La Rioja is not for everyone. I’m sorry.
An inspiring, exciting bottle that on the back label proudly obstructs a simple "crianza" and deserves all kinds of praise. I still have two more bottles. Happiness

Five 2019 Left Bank Wines, First through Fifth Growths: The loudest bouquet, featuring red berry liqueurs (impressions, if not whiffs, of VA, perhaps the result of amphora aging), meadow flowers, and alongside the other four, this features unmistakably Pauillac characteristics. No one ever accused Pauillac of pretty perfume, yet unabashedly bold it is.

This makes its mark on the palate. Rustic purity and precision throughout. Focused, primarily red fruited attack. The highly expansive, ultra gripping middle features a core of purple and black berries. Seamless, ripe, clamp-down tannins show prominently at the back. Persistent, inflection-changing finish; the longest of the five. Straightforward, high-quality, and deeply satisfying. Stylistically, a hybrid of the rustic '14 vintage and the ethereal '15.

Likely to enter its wheelhouse after 2040 and hold through 2050.

EHC placed this last (on account of the bouquet). I placed it first (although the Margaux might be the better wine over the long haul).

Visit to Ornellaia in Bolgheri, where it is located at the beginning of the famed Cypress avenue.

This is Ornellaia's "second" white wine, and it was a pleasure to try this at the winery on our visit.

I was surprised with the crispness and freshness of this Sauvignon Blanc dominant white!

In fact the blend ratio of this 2020 Poggio Alle Gazze Dell'Ornellaia is 69% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Vermentino, 5% Viognier, and the rest Verdicchio. Only 350 cases were ever produced!

Citrus notes on the nose, and wonderful white fruit such as peaches and apricot on the palate with a wonderful balanced mouthfeel. There were hints of tropical fruit on the finish and that wonderful minerality too. Cheers!

Sings like a bird, as always. Medium-bodied, so much charm, tannins are so soft. Has it's youthfulness making things a bit closed, but this is one of the most approachable Bordeaux in a very approachable vintage.

Everything I love in a wine. Everything I love it in an Italian wine! Incredible leather and cedar in the nose, followed by an enchanting, dark fruit, mid pallet and bracing acidity on the finish. Oh, and the finish! Keeps going and going, and going.

A wine not to share with others. Partly because it is magnificent, partly because it takes a lot of time to unfold. Unfortunately, this review is based on only 1 hour with the wine, but it was on a path to heaven when i emptied the glass.

Nose of bright red fruit, pickled cranberry, earth, herbs and even a slightly green vegetal hint. Palate is very much alike, although the fruit appears more ripe and textured. You wonder why it says 15% alcohol on the label, as it is so elegant and free running.

A wine worth more than just a description. Try it yourself.

Tasted alongside Romano dal Forno Monte Lodoletta Valp.superiore 2013. Two VERY different top league styles of Valpolicella.

I have the Dal Forno 2013 as well. Which one did you like more?

Flowers, smoke, cherries, espresso and powdered cocoa open the perfume. The wine is medium-bodied, with lift, vibrance and loads of sweet, ripe, juicy pure red fruits with a touch of citrus and dark chocolate in the endnote. This is a strong vintage for Poujeaux. In fact, it could be about the best vintage I have ever tasted here. Drink from 2024-2045.

Bought Oreno toscana 2019 ($80) at Costco. The price is exorbitant for wine quality and taste.
Regular cheap wine, taste similar to $15 wine.
No twist, no zest, nothing special about that.
Not worth the price.
Not recommend this wine type to friends and family members.

The 2018 vintage of Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana is a lovely pale to medium ruby color in the glass. Despite being a young wine, it opens with magnificent aromas of cherry, raspberry, and vanilla, which are typical of this vintage. On the palate, the wine is impressive, with well-integrated fruit and oak flavors and earthy balsamic notes. The finish is long and features hints of tobacco and leather, which add complexity to the wine.

One notable aspect of this vintage is its excellent balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins, making it an incredibly enjoyable wine to drink. Furthermore, the wine is made from 100% Sangiovese, a grape variety that is known for producing some of the best wines in Tuscany. The winery, Isole e Olena, is renowned for its dedication to producing high-quality wines that showcase the terroir of the region.

Overall, the 2018 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana is a stunning wine that is already drinking well but also has the potential to age gracefully for many years.

Tuscan Lunch chez Joel (Kent countryside, UK): Cooked black fruit and oak on the nose which carried over on to the midpalate where there were soupy tannins, stewed fruit, and in search of an oasis of freshness. Perhaps it was not my style or my ability to read the wine was hindered by nearly a dozen preceding bottles!

From an original release blue top (!) from my cellar which had some minor leakage so I popped to check. Loads of initial VA - this needed 5hrs in a decanter. I cannot stress this enough... Do NOT pop and pour this wine. Nice deep brown-burgundy colour and 3mm meniscus rim. Behind the initial VA was a lovely mixture of spices which remained but with air the wine was then marked by a 45sec finish of wood smoke and fennel. Intensive rose and tar on the nose, OK mid-palate that falls off a bit (maybe even more air needed) but great sour cherry persistancy in the mouth. Still that lingering smoke was amazing with rich tomato-based food... Almost like there was a bit of Laphroaig mixed in! 94+pts... The best sip was the last, this may be even better next time. No hurry to drink, this has more than 10yrs left.

Edit: as an experiment, after 5hrs in a decanter I ran some through an oxidation bubble machine to simulate a further 2hrs in a glass. The previously disappointing mid-palate became fantastic! This needs even more air than I thought... Try SEVEN hours in a decanter next time.

Decanted for 7hrs, which was needed here. This was a great bottle showing the 'masculine' 55 vintage. This is more about body and power than finesse although I still love the distinct smokey finish almost like a Laphroaig. The bottle was less oxidised than yesterday, a touch clearer, but slightly lacking the great mouthfeel although still fantastic sweet cherry persistency. Burgundy colour this time without a brown rim or much meniscus. Enjoyed with venison meatballs and tomato sauce before dinner. A great treat, although I still prefer the 47, 58, 64 and maybe 71 (in that order). Will try a 64 horizontal from my cellar next week to compare traditional producers...
