This bottle was great, so guessing the last bottle I had may have had an issue. This bottle definitely didn’t seem tired or dusty and was more in line with my earlier note. Have got half the bottle left so will see how it fares this evening.

Nowhere near as good as the last bottle. Had a very dusty, woody quality. Just generally felt a bit over the hill. Enjoyable on the palate still, less so the nose. Hopefully just bottle variation. I’ve got one left, and the other four bottles before this one were delightful, so fingers crossed! Decanted for 1 hour, which could also have been a factor. Decant for 30 mins next time.

Absolutely gorgeous wine. Decanting helps to remove sediment, but it didn’t really need the air. Just a nice mature bottle of wine which has plenty of time left. Rivals any Bordeaux for the price.

Still young and fresh! Very deep dark color. Beautiful fruity Merlot dominated nose. Increasing intensity after 2 hours. Raspberry, blueberry and espresso. Harmonious, smooth and well balanced. Medium to long finish, silky tannins. I am convinced that the wine will deliver pleasure for wine lovers for 2-4 more years. Excellent qpr as always with Serre Nuove!

Monthly Tasting Group HWS; Bolgheri (By BS): Dark berries and sweet spices in the bouquet. On the palate a full bodied wine with a firm amount of sweet spices, good acidity and tannin. The fruit is very ripe and the wine is in its maturity stage with still some room for some more time in the bottle. Beautiful wine.

CT says only good until last year so better drink up. Solid cork with only 1 mm of penetration. A small amount of chunky sediment in the bottle. Still quite deep and dense mulberry colour with some bricking at the rim. Classic Italian nose! Red and black fruits, stone dust, leather, anise and a touch of pitch or eucalyptus at the end when deeply inhaled. Just a lovely nose. Medium-full bodied, gobs of sweet, ripe fruit extract, barely any tannins, good acidity and correct alcohol. Nicely balanced from front to back. Flavours of sweet, ripe red and black fruits, chalky minerals and tannins, some graphite, cedar and tar. Very dry on the finish with a bit of tannic astringency left on tongue and teeth on the very end. Very nice and in no way over the hill. IMO this could go years longer without losing anything.

I've never tasted the first wine, Ornellaia. But this second wine is just a power pack, so complex, impressive and very very good. The grape mix and quality of craftmanship makes this one of the most exiting wines I've had. Ad the 12 years it's spent in the cellar.... I mean. WOW. Still got many many years ahead, and will probably evolve and get even better. -> 95p?

Dark cherry colour. Still youthful with lots of dark red and blue fruit. Lush wine, a beautifully balanced Bordeaux like blend. Excellent integration of fruit, alcohol and tanins. In the mouth is more dark fruit and lots of red plums and blackberry. Coco and chocolate covered raisins follow on the long finish. Fabulous wine from an excellent pedigree. Axel Heinz is a magician even with the second label. Still has a few years to go in evolution.
Still my favourite of all the Serre's...... To my palate it is the most elegant. In hotter vintages this wine can often be a little jammy (but still enjoyable). The bottles I have of this seem to have miraculously avoided this fate .... Probably time to drink up though, I think this is at it's best.

This wine had a pleasant but not fulsome aroma with notes mostly of dark berries. The wine was crimson in colour and clear. It was full-bodied , balanced with a nice firmness from beginning to end. Cherry was more apparent in the flavour than on the nose. The bottle was distinctly better than the 2008 which was consumed the previous day.

Fruit Day - Decanted off a very small amount of hard sediment. Garnet core to a slightly orange/brown/ruby edge and thin watery rim. Gorgeous nose of red florals, dark red fruit (Black cherry but also something richer - plum perhaps or possibly cassis), light spice and the tiniest touch of leather and sweet tobacco. On the palate, it shows strong mocha and black cherry along with sweet tobacco, sweeter cooking spices, leather, and you can actually taste the red floral elements. Remarkable! The finish is long with warming spices (clove and nutmeg) and sweet dark and red fruit. This is excellent and drinking beautifully now. There’s plenty of ripe tannin and fresh acidity to have it develop longer - perhaps another 5 years on this plateau. Such a beautiful wine!

This has developed into a remarkably good wine. The tannins have really smoothed out but the core of dark cherry fruit, tar, and a faint hint of rubber remain. It’s in a wonderful place right now and may still improve.

(Decanted for one hour) Deep red colour with a maturing nose showing hints of leather, some dried fruit, chocolate and warm red berries. Still showing some austerity on the palate from tannins combined with some warmer fruitiness on the mid before showing some Corinth on the nice and lengthy finish. (Best 2019-2029)

An Ornellaia Monday Evening (Silo 16, Hamburg-Harburg Harbour, Germany): 54% Mer, 31% CS, 10% PV, 5% CF, this is a different wine, compote nose and palate, from a very warm year, silky, but lacking the tention of the first two samples, tasty swallowing, more gastronomic and somehowe a crowd pleaser in a good way, drink up, **-***,86-88

Great on opening. Beautiful Bordeaux-like nose but with some nice Italian grip and acidity on the palate. Lots of red and darker fruits, cherry, blackberry etc, no overpowering cassis. Must use some very good quality oak but it’s almost imperceptible which I like. With an entrecôte steak and later gouda cheese it seemed a little too young or disjointed. The tannins have retreated noticeably but it’s not expressive or complex enough. I would give it a few more years maybe? Or maybe as a second wine it’s more casual and never going to blow you away with a big steak? On it’s own again it’s very good but still not as good as at first. It seems a little hot and raw on the palate. I think time might help. Price-wise, it’s on the high side, perhaps like the 2nd wine of a 1st or 2nd growth Bordeaux these days. I think you could get a lot better in Bordeaux or South Africa drinking much better after 10 years.

Far too meaty and has lost its chunky fruitiness but gained little refinement with age. I have several vintages of these and I hope they do a lot better than these. This has followed a totally different trajectory to most Bordeaux. 88

Dark and professional but not inaccessible. Berries and espresso. Well-judged-but-apparent dark wood. A little sharp. Really great but just not memorable.

The 2009 Le Serre Nuove presents a much darker personality, as I think of mahogany with my nose in the glass. The bouquet was a mix of deep, dark, rich wood tones with tobacco, balsamic spice, and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, I found a dark and textural wine with a bitter herbal twang as dark red fruits and spice were invigorated by zesty acidity. The finish was long, bringing Balsamic spices back into the mix, along with lingering dark fruits. The 2009 is a different animal all together, and I don’t see it drinking this well for the long haul, but I must admit that I find it to be quite attractive today.

I've always been a fan of this wine - this was really strapping and felt young still. I'd give this another five years. Big tannins, takes a half hour to open a bit. Really shows the terroir.

A deep colour; full, rich, spicy fruit, slightly sweet and noticeably oaky. A wine of power rather than elegance, and good for outdoor drinking (as on this occasion), since there is not much subtlety to be lost in the open air.

Maybe my favorite second label to date. This bottle is in a perfect place right now. It's showing some age with its garnet hue. Tannins are well integrated and acidity is still vibrant. Amazing aromas that I can sit back and sniff all day. On the palate is intense flavors of chocolate and dark fruits. This bottle makes me want to stock up on a bunch of the 2013 for future use.

Decanted for about 2 hours, it is better than the last one I had a few years ago. Still a young wine that would rather wait 5 more years, but starts to be more approachable. Dark colored and profound. Dark fruity nose, dark cherries, blackberries and nice spices. Interesting structure that will get better.

Ordered at restaurant Limoncello in Bad Homburg. Popped and poured, consumed over a period of two hours. The wine was dark ruby in colour and reserved at first. The nose slowly opened up to ripe fruit, some chocolate and vegetal notes. On the palate the wine showed ripe red and dark fruit, dark cherry, raspberry, blackberry, black currant, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, liquorice and vegetal notes, with medium-level acidity, ripe, medium-plus tannin, some heat from the alcohol, a good mouthfeel and very good length. The medium- to full-bodied wine was ripe and broad and seemed thick and heavy, and hence did not drink well at its current stage. Personally, I would hold and revisit in five years.

A deep colour. This bottle seems rather restrained, the fruit withdrawn and with a rather dry, short finish. Perhaps it's going through a dull phase, but I think the fruit is rather dominated by the wood which has made it a little dry and hollow. Slightly disappointing.

I would say still hang on to this longer. Paired with mushroom linguini. Decanted for an hour and it improved. Aroma of blueberry and medium toast, tastes of boysenberry and dark chocolate. Full body but the finish tapered off at mid-palate, which improved after the decant.

Dark red in color. Good fruit, with a cedar element. But lacks complexity. Dusty tannins in the finish. Not sure if more time will resolve these. I note the label states "Rosso." Better with food such as a nice Italian or Spanish cheese.

A deep colour; rich, berry fruit, soft textured but quite concentrated; the oak is a little obvious and there is still some tannin on the finish, so this might be better in 2 - 3 years when the elements are more integrated. Even so, it makes enjoyable drinking now.

Weekly tasting group #118; Italy: Bolgheri (@ CvR): Beautiful bouquet with cherries, good oak and a touch of pleasant barnyard. On the palate an intense wine with juicy cherries, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness, well dosed and integrated oak and round tannin. Early maturity now and room for improvement. At its peak probably between 2016 and 2020. 92 for today.

Sexy, flashy, sweet (but not too sweet) chocolatey fruit. Like an unctuous raisin and biscuit chocolate bar. A little heat on the finish, though not problematic. Enough acidity to keep everything fresh and a pleasant bite at the finish. As ever with Italian Bordeaux blends, 24 hours in an open bottle smooths out the rough edges and a lovely, engaging and fun wine emerges. 90

I opened this at our 1/25/14 Super Tuscan tasting. It had a deep, rich and layered bouquet of mocha, floral, black cherry, plum and spice aromas. The palate was rich, layered and dry with flavors of plum, black cherry, mocha and spice.

This needs a lot of time in the decanter. Very harsh at the beginning, with a lot of spice and tobacco on the palate. Started to open after almost 2 hours. Medium body, Medium-Long finish. This needs more time in the cellar or a long decanting time (2+ hours).

Brash, seemingly over extracted and with an alcohol burn, when this was first opened I wondered if this was the same wine I had last year. 24 hours later and all this had gone leaving rich, dense creamy black fruit, liquorice, grilled meat and charcoal nicely balanced with fresh acidity and saline. The quality could easily be mistaken for a far pricier right bank but this is desperate for a long decant. 91

Osteria I Nonni Fall Italian Tasting (I Nonni, St. Paul, MN): This is a honey. I love this wine. Very approachable even now, bringing forth florals, bright red fruits, and hints of espresso. We poured the wine into a decanter and served the first glass immediately. The wine was tight yet elegant at first, but opened-up as time passed. It offered floral notes, dark fruits, cherry, black currant, leather and hints of coffee and tobacco on the nose. On the palate the medium-bodied wine offered floral notes, juicy red and dark fruit flavours, cherry, black currant, some tobacco, some coffee, some chocolate, spices, clove, vanilla and a hint of coconut, paired with medium- to low acidity, a thick and slightly creamy mouthfeel and very good length. The oak is quite present on the palate yet not out of balance. The wine should benefit from cellaring.

Thursday Night Mixed Bag (Andrew's House): Decanted approximately 1 hour, served blind. Deep purple in the glass. On the nose, red berries; raspberry, strawberry, pyrazine, light herbal notes, light underbrush, with accents from the oak of caramel, vanilla and light coffee. On the palate, this seems loaded with pyrazine, with some moderate acidity that contrasts the ripe fruit and a touch of drying tannin on the moderate finish. Overall, a nice wine in its own right, but a poor value for the money.

Popped and poured, though this bottle needs a few hours in a decanter to properly show. That or 5-10 more years in bottle. Aromatically it's gorgeous, with loads of black fruit, earth, saddle leather, garrigue, and bittersweet chocolate. There's a perceptible oak element but it's well integrated into the bouquet. On the palate there's massively concentrated black fruit flavors contrasting with firm, dense tannin. Flavors of leather and tar come through on the mid-palate before the tannin envelops them through the long, tapering finish. An amazing wine that will only get better with age.

Tasted at the estate.much like the Ornellaia far too young and although the fruit is their the harsh big tannins on the end spoil the show. Too young to rate but we loved the balance on wood or maybe how even at this young age the oak is not overdone. Wait 3 yrs minimum.

Incredible inky concentration, similar to that of Aldo conterno or El Nido clio. Oodles of thick black fruit but the savoury palate, whack of tobacco, fresh acidity and slightly rustic but fine tannins give it class.
This a Bordeaux blend and has one foot in the right bank with its merlot coffee/cocca notes but I struggle to think of an RB that does a better job at this price point. Superb. 92 points.

Umiddelbart rå, mørk frukt og noe ubehagelig underlivsaktig, gummi. Dette blåser bort og gir etterhvert en fin fruktdrevet nese som bekrefter området. Noe slappe tanniner som strammer seg med luft. Fin syre. Gir etterhvert silkefølelse imunn men det tar tid. Kantete de første to timene. Bra greier!

Decanted 4hrs prior. Nose with some flit, plum, black berry, and cedar. Lush dark fruit on the palate, very ripe almost coying as it has a hint of sweetness and hollowness transitioning to th finish. This bottle with a similar flavor profile to the last, but seemed softer and less structured, almost flabby. Maybe because it was paired next to a bdx. Hopefully this will tighten up with time.

Decanted an hour before tasting. Shy nose with a little subtle spice and dried berries that slowly opened up with ripe cherry and licorice notes. Palate is ripe and fat, with dense dark berries and plum--showing a distinctly merlot profile with a little cassis from the cab. Well structured and balanced, with fine polished tannins and enough acidity to keep the fruit "bright". Lengthy fruit filled finish and hint of stone. This needs time to drop the baby fat but seems to have the structure to age. Nice wine, but maybe better suited in the $30-40 range. I was expecting a harder, more tannic, less ripe wine with a little more depth. On day two, this had deepened, showing more cab character with a leafy herbal note and showing an exotic quality that the grand vin has. Still fat and ripe, but much more interesting and showing an aspect of terrior not noticed on night one. based on this, probably needs 3-5yrs to come into it's own, but still delicious now.

Double decanted for four hours, served at room temperature. Color: Dark Red. Nose: Cinnamon, Blueberry, Clove, Vanilla, Green Pepper. Palate: see nose. Finish: Medium. Tannins: Medium to High. Alcohol: 14.5 % showing a little. Full bodied lush mouthfeel with dark fruit upfront. Mid-palate adds baking spices transitioning into a vanilla infused finish with blueberry pie. Big and bold at this early age showing potential with very dark quality fruit and spiciness. I would hold for another 5-8 years to let the second tier flavors resolve. 90-91 points.

Sassicaia and Ornellaia Masterclass at Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (Landmark Hotel, London): Deep red colour. Nose with sweetish fruit including blackcurrants and some other dark berries, coffe and eucalyptus. More than medium bodied on the palate, blackcurrants, some blackberries, rather sweetish attack, some spice and tar notes, medium+ tannins, but tannins of a soft and polished nature. Young but accessible. 89-90 p A wine with a very serious nose in modern style, but one that give me rather much New World vibes, more than the 2009 Guidalberto when tasted alongside.

Decanter Sassicaia & Ornellaia Masterclass (Landmark Hotel London): Dark ruby color fading to a narrow purple rim. Expressive young nose just beginning to show some secondary aromas. Macerated cassis, sweet spice, espresso and tobacco, elegant but evident and not fully integrated new oak, typical Cabernet herbaceousness - even capsicum. Ripe and sweet nose with depth and concentration of fruit and elegant aromatics. Some mineral notes like graphite are also evident, as is an elegant note of licorice. Palate is very refined with smooth texture and good definition of fruit. Flavours include espresso, licorice and cedar besides the cassis. Medium to full bodied with a lovely cedary bitterness. Tannins are firm but ripe and there is some very good acidity balancing sweet fruit. Elegant, ripe but very refined wine. Young but approachable.

I cannot help but be disappointed. I had tasted about 8 months ago the 2006 vintage and was very pleased with it. I know this is much much younger but it really was below expectations. Fruit is there but slightly muted and tanins are still very strong. The wine seemed uni-dimensional... Maybe time will improve it but i am in no hurry to drink my next one.

(Decanted for one hour)
Deep red colour with a maturing nose showing hints of leather, some dried fruit, chocolate and warm red berries. Still showing some austerity on the palate from tannins combined with some warmer fruitiness on the mid before showing some Corinth on the nice and lengthy finish.

The quality could easily be mistaken for a far pricier right bank but this is desperate for a long decant. 91

More than medium bodied on the palate, blackcurrants, some blackberries, rather sweetish attack, some spice and tar notes, medium+ tannins, but tannins of a soft and polished nature. Young but accessible. 89-90 p
A wine with a very serious nose in modern style, but one that give me rather much New World vibes, more than the 2009 Guidalberto when tasted alongside.
