Deep ruby-red. Took 20 minutes to open up in the glass after opening. Black raspberries, blackberries, black currants, mocha and licorice in the nose with hints of spice. Deep complex black fruits in the flavor, blackberries and black cherries. Perfectly balanced, great mouthfeel and nice structure and complexity and a long silky finish. A great food wine.

What a beauty....Ornellaia never fails. This 2009 has great depth of fruit and power, but with great elegance and complexity as well. I think this wine will be incredible in another 10 yrs.

- Nose: Present and full-bodied nose, jumping out, lots of Cabernet aromas of peppers, spices, tomatoes. Rather dark fruity, black pepper. Unfortunately, there is also a little too much coffee and some black chocolate. Fleshy and leathery tendencies are also developing, not yet over the top, but I wouldn't necessarily give it another 5 years!! - Palate: The tannins are polished but still give enough grip. For me personally, the lightness and acidity are somewhat lacking. Very suitable with food, almost a little too heavy on its own. The length is outstanding in return. - 93 points

Super Tuscans - Berry Brothers; 6/28/2023-7/28/2023 (St James St, London): Dark red, some bricking. Soapy opening nose, black fruit, some pepper notes, warm. Taste is fruity, fine age, cassis, open structure and very good. Additional air increases the sweetness compared to the more Snagiovese based Tuscans. Interesting how the cab sav/merlot combinations in the Super Tuscans makes this/them a more 'international' and easier drinking wine. Does this make them too similar to Bordeaux?

An outstanding wine that continues to evolve well. Highly concentrated dark fruit with notes of cassis, plum, cigar box, with hint of game and spice. Rich velvety mouth fell with long satisfying finish.

Bouquet of ripe blackberries, bilberries, liquor. Intensive full palate, with ripe berries, salted caramel, spices, sweet with some acidity, super-smooth, balanced, relatively long finish. Great wine that is getting more interesting with a bit more age, likely even nuanced in 2-3 years, but a true pleasure to drink.

Drank from a magnum along w/ 09’ Masseto. This ornellaia is full of very ripe blue fruits with silky tannins and smooth texture to it. A little bit too rich at the moment, could use some years to mellow out, but absolutely delicious at the same time.

Nose: agreeable ripe, dark fruit, paired with licorice, graphite, leather, well balanced and round nose with first sights of matureness
on the palate fresh, with good acidity, drinking very well. the warm vintage is noticeable, which makes the wine a little less elegant than I would prefer.
it has still aging potential, it developed well since I last tasted one bottle of the 09 vintage 1.5 years ago

Dense and concentrated with a ripe dark cherry fruit, sweet notes reminding me of toffee and gingerbread, and herbal notes of fresh sage and laurels. Beyond this, the 2009 Ornellaia also offers initial aging notes of barnyard, finely scented pipe tobacco and an element of spice. Firm tannins provide for plenty of body, but the palate feels well integrated and the tannin are a great match for the acidic structure . First time tasting the 2009 and for me this was on a par with other great vintages such as 2015 or 1998. Decanted for approx 1h which worked, but feel free to go longer to fast-forward to the sweet spot.

Unbelievable nose of cassis, black cherry, old cigar box with a dusting of ancient tobacco at the bottom, oregano rubbed on roasting game. Sublime palate of blackcurrant, red currant and licorice with vibrant, almost dancing acidity and incredibly fine integrated tannins. Enchanting, lingering and glowing finish of leather, stewed fruit and warm Tuscan earth. Just… stunning. 95 with upside(!)

TS’ Birthday Gathering (CdC/DP/old Dominus/Latour): Tasted double blind. This was a spectacular bottle and easily deserves a 95+ point rating. Very expressive, intense aromatics, fairly complex with already first tertiary aromas, high precise, creamy yet light structure, good density but no excess weight, good length. We guessed Tuscan Bdx blend but I was quite surprised that this is a 2009 and not more mature due to its completeness. This wine is in a great drinking window right now. While age should certainly add more complexity I’m not 100% convinced that the structure will hold up that well for another 20 years but 10 for sure. This confirms my view that Ornellaia is a clear step up from Sassicaia and that Sassicaia, today, is overrated, especially now that secondary market prices are higher than for Ornellaia (while my personal scores and CTs average ratings for Ornellaia are higher).
TN: Medium+ expressive nose displaying dark red and black fruit, hints black truffles and warm, dry Tuscan earth. Very harmonious and inviting nose with good precision. More expressive and more spectacular on the palate with lots of tension and freshness, a good tannin structure with melted tannins, good density and weight and a beautiful creamy structure. Slightly higher complexity than on the nose with the same ripe but not too ripe dark red and black fruits, warm earth, some hints of forest floor, black truffles, herbs and bushes I would associate with
Decanting: Not decanted, no extensive decanting necessary (at least with this bottle).
- Decanted for 1h - Nose: intense nose, complex and quite ripe at first taste: blackberries, dark plums, bacony Cabernet spice, which also brings earth and peppers. In addition some fresh herbs. A magnificent back and forth of primary, secondary (vanilla, chocolate, wood) and tertiary aromas (forest floor, mushrooms). All in all, very delicate and beautifully done. - Mouth: Very mouth-filling (the aromas are carried to all corners of the mouth), ripe and silky (medium +) tannins, medium in acidity and medium + body. The Cabernet spice keeps standing out. The length and complexity is very very great. The finish is also very long - wow! - Still has a good 5-10 years in the tank.

Decanted for 1h Bouquet full of ripe fruits: cassis, blackberry, dark cherry. also dominant spice aromas such as cloves and pepper. The wine is still youthful, but has already hints of tertiary aromas such as licorice. On the palate this Ornellaia 09 is a bomb that explodes and showcases its aromas: ripe dark cherries, blackberry, calves, black pepper, paprika and spice, vanilla... medium acidity, ripe high tannins, high alcohol, full body, incredible length, immensily high intensity of aromas. every spot of the mouth gets filled with the aromas. got 10+ years in the bottle

Decanted briefly. Really opened up after an hour with amazing balance and finesse. Black fruit, acid, and earth make up the medium-plus body and the seamless finish. A beautiful high-production wine and the best vintage of this I've had.

Bouquet somewhat raisiney and pruney, slightly masking more complex and elegant aromas, showing the vintage. Palate in this context is surprisingly elegant, lush and smooth, not heavy at all, with a slight acidic, tannic backbone, and a long finish, with spices and light sweetness, showing the pedigree of the wine. Best 2009 Italian I’ve had so far. Feels like can benefit slightly from more time but already fantastic to drink.

A terrific and easy accessible wine at this stage. Not as complex as you might expect but easy to drink. Needs to be open about 2 hours to open up. Tannins are not strong. Acidity is medium to low. Young. No sign of age on color or flavor profile.

Ditto other reviews. This wine is still super tight and closed. It shows promise of a top quality bdx blend. Forest, herbs, mint, violet and hints of black fruits. Very gravelly and taught in the palate. The cab franc shows through. Going to wait another 5 . . .

Easy drinking and undeniably pleasurable, but all in all too polished and refined for me to really desire. Ripe, smoky nose showing plenty of oak in addition to the rich black and blue fruit. Some minerality on the palate keeps things interesting, but the brightness of the fruit prevents any real balance from being achieved.

18.5 vvPunkte (93/100). vvWine.ch

A lovely wine but surprisingly young. A youthful Left Bank nose with sweet tannins, blackberry, and an earthy leather component. Silky mouth feel, even a bit voluptuous. Beautifully balanced, a slight bit hot, but layers of flavor and a long finish. It will drink well into the 2020s and even beyond. A perfect wine to accompany Christmas Day prime rib dinner.

Popped and poured from split. This is a darker red wine with some modest sediment toward the end of the bottle -- decanting is recommended given the sediment and benefits some aeration would bring. On the nose, I get mint, herbs, vanilla, blackberry, and black licorice. In the mouth, this is a medium-weight wine with a solid structure and rich dark fruit flavors, all culminating in a layered finish. Overall, this is a very classy and structured Cab-based wine. It should have a long life ahead of it. 93 points.

i agree with others here, e.g. J Moon, "deep, dark, and structured". Brought to our home by Italian friends, we opened it for tasting before dinner, and it was all gone before we served the meal. Fortunately they had brought another nebbiolo that went nicely with the food, as well. What a generous treat.

Decanted this wine for 3 hours and took to an Italian restaurant with another couple. Boy this wine rocked. I thought it may need a lot more time or we were opening prematurely but everyone enjoyed it, especially over the 2012 Cali Cab Venge before it. More red fruit especially red raspberry, plum nose, earth, cedar all working together. Finish was not tannic at all. Complexity is there and I won't be afraid to drink the next few over the next two years. Really pairs well with meat and red sauces.

Needed a good 2 hr decant as was very tight and tannic when opened, suggesting a 10-20 year window. When served w beef, exploded into a thick beautiful array of blue berries and dark fruits. Georgeous and worth the hype, complex and beguiling. First growth quality.

Amazing complexity. Wonderful aromas of dark berry fruit and mocha. Flavor of dark chocolate, berry jam, and layers of flavor from front to finish. Loved every minute and wish we had more!
This wine lives up to the hype. Great inter-mingling of dark fruit, plowed earth, broken stones, maturing tanning. It's all there. All working together. Tannins supple yet showing. The bottle has a lot of time ahead of it but can be enjoyed right now.
This wine has evolved quite nicely since last try two years ago. Decanted for a short while as this was the second wine served with dinner. Tremendous wine, aromas of dark ripe fruits. A big and lush wine - hints of dark chocolate and black fruits on the palate. Still maturing with some mild tannins that need to resolve.
Blind tasted. 52/22/21/5 Cabernet/Merlot/Cab Franc/Petit Verdot. 18 months 70% new French oak. Nose shows earth, forest floor, sweet oak notes. Palate gives red fruit, plum, dried cranberries, dirty flowers, med plus tannins, med plus acidity. We were told it was a SuperTuscan and we all thought it was a Sangiovese blend, and if we hadn't been told the year, we would have guessed more age. My favorite of an impressive 5 wine lineup.
A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Stood upright for 12 hours, 6+ hours breathing in the bottle. Dark-purplish red. Aromas of soft, black ripe fruit with hints of chocolate and herbs. Silky, elegant with baby tannins that develop in the middle of the palate and spreads throughout the mouth. The tannins continue to develop from "barely legal" to tantalising 20-something year old. We cannot wait to sip the balance of our case over the next ten years or so as she becomes an elegant lady!! A fairly long finish. We were pleasantly surprised to sip this vintage now as it clearly is ready, but displays huge potential over the next decade or so. Just finishing after nearly 9 hours breathing...it is now magic and pushing us to 97. Molto interessante!

Ti sbatte in faccia tutti i sapori senza pudore ne riservatezza.

I opened this for a Prime Rib dinner with friends on 4/11/15. It had a complex, supple, focused and truly spectacular bouquet of plum, raspberry, mocha, cocoa, toast and spice aromas. The palate was rich, deep, elegant and layered with flavors of plum, black raspberry, black currant, mocha, cocoa, toast and spice.
Derin yakut-mor renkte ve mor rofleli. Damakta son derece kompleks, kirmizi meyveler, bitter cikolata, bogurtlen, murdum erigi aromalari birbirine girmis.
Outstanding!!!

Out of 0.375: Dark in color. Nose of dark fruit and berries, chocolate and herbs. Shows still lots of tannins and some tartiness. Acidity is not (yet) integrated. Very long and powerful. Massive nose, very ripe fruit, smoky, sweet, slightly tight, some herbal and vegetal notes, too. Very tannic, but round and friendly, sweet fruit somewhere underneath, lots of concentration, really long and persistent but a bit chunky and hot and too much. Definitely needs time but not the most elegant. Not sure if for the long term. During the tasting the comparison has been made with some 2003 Bordeaux and I tend to agree. 91-93+(+?)

Wine Adventure - Alto-Adige, Valpolicella, Soave, Bolgheri, Barbaresco & Barolo; 9/11/2013-9/20/2013 (Italy): Sassicaia vs. Ornellaia Smack-Down - Tasted with a plate of prosciutto, cheese, olive oil and bread. No notes. Typical Super Tuscan... light texture, subdued alcohol, red and black cherry fruit with a dark chocolate finish. Well made, but doesn't leave you with that "wow" factor. For the same rough price point, the Sassicaia bowled me over, whereas the Ornellaia just had me thinking this is "pretty darn good". Maybe a little too thin in comparison? Strong tannins and acidity. Perhaps the comparison was unfair and it was simply that particular vintage, but the difference seemed to be in the vinification, rather than the quality of the fruit. Of course, it could just be a personal preference and my palate matches the Sassicaia better...
Very dark and brooding in colour. Lots of tannins up front which I suspect gives this great ageing potential. I was wowed by the nose. Lovely bouquet of red fruits. This is going to grow into a delicious wine

Gambero Rosso 2013 (Metropolitan Pavilion): The nose was densely packed with black currant, blackberry, and plum with hints of herbs and orange peel. On the palate, it was rich and youthful with black fruits and dark chocolate but lacking depth. The finish was long, showing silky structure with lingering black berries and dark chocolate. This was certainly enjoyable, but I can’t justify the price, and I find their second bottle to be just as enjoyable for a much lower tariff.

2013 Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri tour (Union Station, Chicago, IL): Nose: This is wound very tight right now on the nose with tones of red cherries, roasted herbs, spice tones, florals, and some hints of cedar. There is very good balance and depth that is showing through the tightness.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with big and chewy tannins as well as medium+ acidity. The structure is extremely youthful along with classy and balanced tones of red cherries, roasted herbs, spice tones, and some cedar.
Overall: This is painfully young right now, but it shows the class and depth one would expect from Ornellaia. This is certainly a long distance wine and needs a good amount of time to fully show itself.

As the 2002 vintage showed there is no bad Ornellaia just vintages that will come round earlier than others, and this I believe is the case with 2009. Leaner than the magnificent 2008 with slightly bitter tannins on the finish, it still has a nice nose with florality, minerality, ripe black fruit and new oak and a palate which is elegant and refreshing and medium concentration relatively to other vintages. I think this can be approached in 3 or four years.

Tasted at the estate. Far too young to appreciate but were really surprised that throat here is not overdone ( even at this young age). Underneath the youth the fruit is their begging the tannins to soften and become silky. Harsh tannin on the finish at this stage. Wait 5yrs+. Too young to rate for us.

- Decanted for 1h
- Nose: intense nose, complex and quite ripe at first taste: blackberries, dark plums, bacony Cabernet spice, which also brings earth and peppers.

Bouquet full of ripe fruits: cassis, blackberry, dark cherry. also dominant spice aromas such as cloves and pepper.

Bouquet somewhat raisiney and pruney, slightly masking more complex and elegant aromas, showing the vintage. Palate in this context is surprisingly elegant, lush and smooth, not heavy at all, with a slight acidic, tannic backbone, and a long finish, with spices and light sweetness, showing the pedigree of the wine. Best 2009 Italian I’ve had so far. Feels like can benefit slightly from more time but already fantastic to drink.

18.5 vvPunkte (93/100). vvWine.ch

93 points.

Deep ruby with a focused nose of black fruit and spice along not very pleasant caramel notes. Great power on palate but kind of heavy with a bitter finish. Expected more.

(Tenuta dell' Ornellaia vertical by Oenocosmos) Deep purple color. Dense nose, deeply fruity, with baskets of berries and plums, seductive flowery notes as well.
Very round in the mouth, soft and juicy tannins, high acidity but very concentrated. Filled with vanilla and forest fruits that remain all the way to the end in the medium to long aftertaste.

Ornellaia Tasting organized by Oenocosmos (Vezenes Restaurant, Athens, Greece): Extremely youthful, with fresh dark cherry and blackberry fruit, intense oak of excellent quality, licorice, mint and spice. Full-bodied, powerfull but elegant, yet extremely youthful and vigorous with tameless tannins, amazingly fresh fruit and high acidity. Endless aftertaste. Needs several years to settle down but already shows its beauty and character, like a wild thoroughbred.
