Very drinkable, but past its prime. Fruit has receded, there's acidity left, not a lot of tannin. After opening, orange rims that turned brown within about one hour.

Medium garnet colour. Dark fruit, cassis, dark cherry, floral notes, vegetal notes, cedar, leather, tobacco, graphite and complex spice notes, with good acidity, partly resolved tannin and good length. Only average concentration, but good balance and persistence. The wine greatly benefited from careful aeration, gained flesh and complexity, and grew on me over time. Much better than the vintage would suggest. Drink now.

Served blind so I could not be influenced by the vintage. Drank alongside a Pichon Lalande 94. This was much more closed, tighter and structured. The Lalande was drinking much better, open and floral. I was shocked this was a 94 as I thought it was early 2000s. Make no mistake, this is a big wine. Lots of dark fruit, spice and pepper. This is an awesome wine that drinks well above the reputation of the vintage. Quintessential Pauillac with pencil shavings, currant, flowers, and earth. The fruit is in great balance with the resolved tannins and supporting acidity. A complex classic Bordeaux that for my palate would put many modern wines to shame. I purchased this bottle on a whim in my early wine buying days and am so glad I did.
Decanted after disintegrated cork. Opened up well and seemed to have loads of fruit and spice. Felt it had held up really well. Color was a garnet look with lots of legs. Decanted for about an hour. Initial pours into glasses was very promising. However, this wine fell off a cliff! Ten minutes later in the glass, wine became flat and very watery. Lost lots of its fruit and no tannins. Not unpleasant, just not as vibrant. However, several,at the party thought this wine was WOTN. Last bottle.

Dinner at Limewood, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong (Limewood, The Pulse, 30 Beach Road, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong): Last of a case enjoyed over the past 8 years and the right time to drink it. Briefly double-decanted before taking to the restaurant. Still a bright, fresh-looking ruby semi-transparent colour. Textbook Pauillac nose of earth, cedar and still fresh-ish blackcurrent and blackberry fruit with some undercurrent asian dry powdered spices like cumin and cinnamon stick. Unfortunately the palate at this age is finally showing the weaknesses of the very wet vintage that the expert winemaking had masked for so many years. Not yet fully tertiary but showing a slight green stalkiness and not much in the way of length. But a fond farewell to a wine I have enjoyed a lot (although the 1994 Pontet Canet has always been the stand-out for this difficult Bordeaux vintage.

Popped and poured. Only needed 20 minutes to open up to red berries, a light-sih ruby, with slight pencil shavings and cigar box. Very well proportioned, very nice balance, slightly quick on the finish. Very pleasant to drink.

The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, raisin, meaty and tobacco. It tastes like blackberry, lead pencil, forest floor and mineral. The body is light/medium. The wine has angular texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has medium acidity.

Dinner at Seasons (Seasons By Olivier E., 3/F, Two Lee Gardens, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong): Briefly decanted and then drank over the next 3 hours alongside a Ch. Montelena 1994. Translucent ruby colour that is just turning to transparent. Nose is an immediate knife-edged definition and cut followed by well-delinated but restrained blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Palate is clean, lean and very blackcurrant but showing the leanness of the thin wet year.....but this is more than made up for by the lovely light-headed resonance and reverberance. Ah, then it started to keep adding body and filling out more and more on the palate and getting more velvety. Unfortunately it ran out of steam after about 3 hours and the final glass was skinny and slightly oxidised. Definitely time to drink up......unlike the Ch. Montelena, which is still a baby.91+.

At last this wine shows it´s class. That was a harsh and unapproachable bastard for a long time. Still a bit on the tannic and austere side of a Grund Cru Medoc, the wine gains a nice body and weight, complexity, even charme (!) and elegance after 2-3 hours in a decanter. Restraint fruit but it´s all there: Cassis, Cedar box, pencil shavings etc. Nice length. Old School, not great but spotless. Some people would say this wine calls for food (beef or lamb of course) but I love it just like it is. I don´t think it will further improve because the fruit is rather muted and it loses a bit structure and mid palate after 4 hours decanting. So drink up without a hurry.
There´s still a chance to find this on Ebay or at auctions under 50 Euros. Grab it, if you want to taste the classic Medoc style.

Austere in style, the best part of the experience with its tobacco, truffle, cedar chest and red berry perfume, there is a noticeable green note and some dryness to the tannins on the finish. Drink up. This is not going to get any better with time.

This is classic claret in my view. Mature nose, tobacco, forest notes, ripe fruit, liquorice. On the palate not too generous, slightly lean, good acidity, fruit is still present, hardly any tannins, medium+ finish. This is ready to be consumed now. I loved it for what bordeaux is about and it is showing brilliantly for a rather weak vintage but i don't see any benefit in keeping it.

At the lighter end of the spectrum for PB. Cedary nose in great condition and adorable wine with small oomph, but a slight, yet tannic, back bone. Nice! Mature! Struck by a cold, at La Rochelle in Omotesando (Tokyo).

Shared w/Grand Crew. Maturing in a lovely way, and perfectly ready to drink. Showed very very well among a bunch of 95's and 96's that really weren't ready to drink yet. THIS is what 'off vintages' are for.

NobleRottersSydney - Flagship wines (Alio's, Surry Hills): [12.5%, cork] {Stephen} Aged. All cedar nose. Attractive in an old-fashioned way, but there doesn’t seem to be much fruit left. Sure enough, the palate confirms this, being rather gaunt and anorexic. Greg observes “the brett adds interest”…really! In fact, being light-medium-bodied, with gentle dusty tannins and an almost medium-length (but desiccated) finish, the structural balance is pretty good. Oh, yeah, except for the missing fruit. “But apart from that, Mrs Lincoln, did you enjoy the play?”

Bill's Monthly Lunch - October 2012 (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – Medium red showing hints of age. Classic Bordeaux nose with blackcurrants, cedar, leather and a hint of sweet Bordeaux funk. The fruit is dark and sweet, yet classic in profile with excellent concentration and perfectly balanced structure. In a great spot right now. Excellent.

Not as impressive as the last bottle but still a good experience. Cedar, pencil lead, a bit of fruit, some torrefaction and slight tanins still present. Slightly past it's peak, I wouldn't recommend holding on to this and will open my last bottle in the next 6 months.

Lot´s of cedar. Allmost that much that it is more like resin. Very aristocratic wine. More tannins left than I expected but they fit perfectly in the whole ´experience´. Long finish and for the 45 euro´s paid highly recommendable

Dark red-purple, surprisingly intense and bright for the vintage. Nice nose of cedar, vanilla and a little eucalyptus. Full bodied and round. Black currants, dark fruits and cloves on the palate. Well balanced with mouth filling tannins and a nice long finish. Very, very good actually. Drinking well right now.

A fantastic bottle. Great fragrance that's everything I look for in an older Pauillac; savoury earth, graphite, cedar and tobacco combining seamlessly around a core of cassis and dark fruited flavours. Lovely balance, medium weight in the mouth with a polished texture and tannins fully resolved.

Very classic, beautiful nose of graphite, cigar, and black fruit. Medium-minus bodied. Good acidity and still a reasonable backbone of fine, gritty tannins. Short on fruit and length.

Perfect time to drink this wine. After a short decant, it opened up nicely. Complex dark fruit with a long finish. Age is apparent in the rim and the palate, which adds a dried fruit and leather character. Fruit has stood up nicely, however, although this wine should be drunk now or over the next 1-2 years at most. Nearing its past-peak phase.

Pre-Chinese New Year Get-Together (Chez Patrick Restaurant, 26 Peel Street, Central, Hong Kong): Dark ruby semi-transparent colour. Nose is classic pencil lead, graphite, cedar and deep but sharp blackberries. Palate is leaner and more dilute than the nose would suggest. More angular and shorter on length than the Pichon Lalande 1988 we drank alongside it...but who's complaining? Taut and tight, this has hardly unwound at all from the last bottle I opened in 2007 and I wonder whether it ever will.

Outstanding bottle. Opened up very quickly with a nose of roses and forest floor, toasted bread, coffee. Rim is showing the wines 17 years. In the mouth it's like liver, iodine, the flavours are so noble that every sip is pure pleasure. This is at its peak and maybe starting to go down slowly. Its time to drink it. Only slight fault is it was a little bit thin. Still, what great wine!

Popped and poured into 2 375s. Beautiful medium ruby red in color. Smells of damp earth. This wine has more power than the '94 Palmer or the '94 Leoville Barton. More tannins, more acidity, Tastes of cassis, and earth. No minerality to speak of. Pretty long finish. Not super rich in taste, but pretty darn good.

beautiful inky color. Still has quite a bit of life left. Nose was subdued with plum/strawberry (darker berry) , vanilla. tobacco/leather were definite non-fruits and it simply went down with no problem. Finish was strong, mouthfeel was great and this wine had great acidic balance with its soft tannins.

Medium-dark garnet. Red fruit, cinammon, coconut, bread dough -- a very inviting nose, exceptional. Similarly fresh palate, with tannins up front that integrate pleasantly mid-palate. Reasonably long, fruity finish, with a slight tartness. Nice.

Occasional tasting group: A mixed set; mostly Bordeaux (blends). (@ PVa): Acidic black fruits in the bouquet. Cassis and black cherries on the palate, as well as good oak. Pichon Baron Offline (UK Wine Forum) (Alba restaurant, London): 94/95/96 served blind. Fleshy, coffee-scented nose but a little thinner on the palate. A good wine though. Reasonably promient acidity but the lack of flesh on this leads me to the 1994. ***1/2

Bottle looked to be in great condition with a high fill and cork coming out cleanly without any signs of seepage/etc. Clear dark red colour with a gorgeous nose that develops over time, showing cassis, tobacco and pencil lead aromas at first and picking up earthy scents, herbs and some faint leathery notes with time. The aromatics offer a lot of pleasure, and it's very pleasant initially on the palate, offering high toned, clear flavours of dark fruits, green herbs and developed tobacco, earthy and smoky notes that slowly seem to thin out with extended air. Fine grained tannins on the back end with high acidity and a medium length finish. Very enjoyable now though, and lovely with food and cheeses.

Raiding the in-laws cellar - Christmas in France 2008; 12/24/2008-12/29/2008 (Lille, France): A major disappointment on christmas day. This was shut down hard. No nose for about 3 hours, and then only just a little whiff of dark fruit.. In the mouth again hardly a thing - eventually some bitter chocolate-like tannins but little else. The fruit is hidden. Blind tasted with 96 and 99 Batailley and 96 Pichon. We all prefered the 1996 Batailley to the 96 Pichon (probably to do with the Batailley being softer and less tannic - would probably give the Pichon 96 more cellar time). The 1994 Pichon definitely a poorer wine than the 1996. 1996 had more fruit and length compared to the 94's quite short finish.

Very disappointing indeed. Promising early nose - earthy with a bit of chocolate sweetness. Very high acidity, even after decanting and breathing for a couple of hours. Tart, tannic, acid on the front and then drops off a cliff-edge. No length at all. Either a poor bottle (not corked and bottle/cork in very good state) or this wine is way past its best. I suspect the latter.

Drunk with friends over dinner at Crown Winer Cellar, Hong Kong. Lovely colour, still very deep and clean. Lovely fresh barnyard nose, a touch musty but very pleasant. In the mouth there are green tones mid-palate but not weedy. Classic Pauillac. Needs food to take off the acid but lovely. Good length. Just drinking well now but not sure whether the green tannins will ever quite mellow.Drunk aside a 1997 Dunn Howell Mountain, which was quite a contrast.

Wow, this bottle was a huge and pleasant surprise. Very nice Bordeaux color, aging but still youthful. Beautiful, bright, sweetly perfumed nose with an underlying earthy tobacco and barnyard character. Silky palate showing sweet chocolate and cassis and a good tannic structure. Exceptionally long finish like sweet fruit candy. The acidity remains a touch aggressive, but a few more years may soften and improve what is already a very fine wine. My score is based on potential, but this bottle was easily 92 points right now.

Did not decant, but gave the wine a few hours in the glass to mellow. Still fairly youthful looking and pretty. Nose shows intense cassis, integrated oak, vanilla, and a slightly weedy untertone. Very similar on the palate, very concentrated, alcohol a bit out of balance, with some unresolved tannins that kick in on the short finish. Generally a bit too austere now, I'm hoping this may improve with a couple more years in the cellar, but I'm not sure.

Tasted blind next to a '95 Canon-la-Gaffeliere, '95 L'Eglise-Clinet, and '82 LaGrange. Drinking wonderfuly, especially if you like mature Bordeaux secondary characteristics like tobacco, cigar box, licorice, dill and smoke. A light-medium bodied wine with a silky mouthfeel and an expansive palate. Finish is just a little scratchy, but a very nice claret that is ready to drink (and can probably still be purchased for under $50).

From a lesse vintage and it showed. Already exhibiting some bricking around the rim of the glass. Gamey notes with berry mixed in. Not as deep as the other 1999 and 2002 which were poured. Rather fruity finish. Not a long ager. 86-87 points.

Decanted and poured. Medium-bodied wine that is medium garnet in color. On the nose, subdued red berry fruit and light wood. On the palate, tartly acidic plums and cassis. This wine picked up weight after a couple of hours of air, but the mid-palate is a bit lacking, and the fruit is losing the battle to acidity and tannins...the definition of austerity. The wine finishes long at 20-30 seconds. Actually reminds me quite a bit of some L' Ecole No. 41 Apogee blends from the late 1990's that I've had in the past year.

Drank without decanting. Nice black cherry, mineral, tobacco, smoke, licorice. Emphasis on licorice. But a bit thin. Fruit mostly gone but came back a bit after an hour. The flavor profile was nice except for a bit of herbaceaousness. But the wine was a bit austere.

Popped and poured. Dark maroon and looking thick in the glass. Nose is layered and sings of tar, dark plummy fruits, violets and spice. In the mouth good doses of dark cassis fruit - tannin is still gripping on the mid palate. Nice secondary notes. Shorter on the finish. Good example of QPR and classic bordeaux available for a song in an off vintage. Will drink my last bottle within the next 12-18 months.

Very 1994 in profile, with good fruit but way too much green pepper and tannins and a short finish. I have tasted better bottles, but still needs more time to see if it matures into something classic. My guess is that it won't.

A lovely brick red colour, with a little lightening at the rim. Wonderful developed nose of brambles, leather, aged cassis & oh-so-typical cigar box. The palate shows these developed notes, with soft fine tannins and a lovely even balance all across the palate (OK, the back palate is a little soft). It's a mid-weight wine only, but the finish remains very persistent. Wonderfully drinkable now, though may hold for a few more years. A pretty good save from a mostly mediocre vintage. A very satisfying drink -I reckon there's way more interest in chasing wines like these at auction than the latest blockbuster Barossa shiraz at $100+...

Mid brick red. The nose shows lots of developed secondary notes - smoke, tobacco, cedar, pencil shavings - which dominate the remnants of some slightly weedy blackcurrant fruit. The tannins have softened out on the palate, which has good flavour coverage, and a moderate length finish. It's a pleasant medium-weight wine, dry and dusty, although at this age it's beginning to look perhaps a bit skeletal. May hold, but don't expect any further improvement.

Dinner at Azul, $115. This was more than a bit much to pay for this, but it was slim pickings on the list. This was a charming enjoyable bottle of Bordeaux though. The nose was the highlight with textbook smells of cedar and graphite. The palate was loaded with minerals and hints of black fruit, somewhat hollow though and lacking the depth of a really terrific wine. The finish was also a bit choppy, still showing some tannins. Despite the 87 point rating, this did deliver a lot of pleasure.

Consumed at Chive restaurant with Ken Johnson, Kathy Swinyer, Frank Noble and Mike Stewart. Bottle provided by Mike Stewart. Similar impression to 1/26/03...I am very concerned that the harsh tannins will outlast the fruit, but I would now be more willing to risk cellaring it for a few more years, simply because the wine is not all that enjoyable at this point.

Tasted at the Superbowl wine and food extravaganza at the home of Amy Weinberg. Bottle brought from the personal cellar of Steve Nemeth. Bright disc. Opaque garnet with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense plum, chocolate, licorice and dried herbs. Full-bodied on the palate, with massive coarse tannins. The tannins overwhelm the fruit. Long, tannic finish. This wine still has plenty of fruit, but I doubt that it will improve with time as it appears likely that the tannins will outlast the fruit. Therefore, I would be inclined to drink up.

The 1994 Pichon definitely a poorer wine than the 1996. 1996 had more fruit and length compared to the 94's quite short finish.

Tart, tannic, acid on the front and then drops off a cliff-edge. No length at all. Either a poor bottle (not corked and bottle/cork in very good state) or this wine is way past its best. I suspect the latter.

Very similar on the palate, very concentrated, alcohol a bit out of balance, with some unresolved tannins that kick in on the short finish. Generally a bit too austere now, I'm hoping this may improve with a couple more years in the cellar, but I'm not sure.

Spicy oak, some light cassis, and licorice/five spice on the nose. A bit austere but really holds your interest on the palate. Nice.

the note by eric was quite accurate. I can not add much other than to say I will be drinking the rest of my 4 bottles w/i 4-5 yrs. I can't see this wine lasting to its outside drinking of 2014. Very nice wine.

Off Vintage Bordeaux (NYC): Great fruity nose. Sweet, tart cherry. Some tobacco. Lightly tannic. Nice but a little too tannic.

No specific tasting notes, this note is going from memory. Good wine, certainly enjoyable, but I thought it could be a bit more integrated and was a bit light in the middle palette.

huge intense fruit of cooked plum, cherry, earthy barn. Very big leady fruit on the palate, the tannins are unrelenting firm and drying. Do not open for 10 years, this is far from approachable.

This wine is full of creamy cherry licorice, vanilla, and asian spices. Enjoyable, yet still has some softening to go before it’s truly enjoyable.

Light cherry licorice with some spice came to mind. Not overly complex, yet enjoyable.
