shared with pat at selkirk manor. tasting on schedule as per my tasting note of 1/30/2019. we have enjoyed wine from this producer since 1973. reviewers say that the cerro anon is intended by the producer to be lighter in style although there have been vintages that are the exception to that rule. this vintage appears to be in the middle of that range. tonight's bottle showed very well. as good as or slightly better than last time. the wine continues to show less sweetness and more substantial mouth feel than the bottle tasted eight months ago, however, at this point i feel that the wine has gone as far as it is going to. still taste the cherry notes. all, in all, a better than average rioja. drink up.

This bottle was really singing and had less of the overbearing oak that I remember from my last bottle. I drink a lot of traditional Rioja and this is every bit as good as and in the same vein as La Rioja Alta’s 904 or 890. A ridiculous bargain from a relatively unknown producer.

Dark red color with a 5mm transitional margin. PNP, drank a small pour over 30 minutes, but this had been open for a good 6 hours.. There's still plenty of wood infuence here, though I find it fairly pleasant with spices and tobacco, tart dark berries and sour cherry, medium body, and firm tannins. Dad liked it and thought it was a cab at first - took awhile to work our way to Spain.

Drank at WWS dinner supplied by SW. Very dark color; nose of sweet cherries & perhaps some raspberries, with plenty of vanilla. Medium bodied, quite tight with lots of sweet new oak, & somewhat 1-dimensional. Very new world in style, and very much in need of several hours decanting. Took a very long time to open up. Quite young and tight, but I would imagine would be far more enjoyable the 2nd day after opening. I'd lay this one down for a good 5 years.

Saturated very dark ruby color; appealing, refined, cherry cordial, tart blackberry, vanilla, black raspberry nose; tight, creamy textured, youthful, cherry cordial, ripe blackberry, vanilla, black raspberry palate with lowish acidity; needs 5-6 years and should go 10+; medium-plus finish (14.5% alcohol; ripe, modern style of Rioja that's a great value at about $12) 91+ points

I always feel like I've stolen this wine from wtso. Excellent quality for price. When ever I see it I'll order a half case. 2006 is showing beautifully, no real signs of age, no obnoxious fruit/oak/tannin bomb. Pop open decant for an hour or so and eat some tapas. There are no notes or score from Jonathan H Newman, which is usually a good buying tool when ordering from wtso. I would imagine it would have scored 100+ or something like that following his fly by night rating scale.
90-92: quite good, as noted previously, this wine is young and needs time to open up a bit. Really well-balanced, I am always hesitant to buy Rioja Reserva for fear of over-oaking, but this wine is harmonious, with a bit of nice Rioja salinity. Very well done and great with food. Best value from WTSO in quite a long time.

PnP from wine fridge and this came out firing. Potent aromas of dark red fruit, spice, oak, touch of leather; very surprising for a wine at this price point. Medium to full bodied, with a long yet simple finish with spice on the palate. Went very well with pork. Excellent QPR. This should last until at least 2017.

Popped and poured. Dark ruby with slight bricking at the periphery. Even a bit of sediment beginning to show. Oaky notes of leather, white pepper, vanilla, boosting the ripe dark fruit, and blackberry with a little heat still blowing off, making me wish I had decanted this. Entry shows a balanced medium bodied wine, the tannins and acidity provide the structure, for the tobacco, plum and cherry notes that come to fruition on the mid palate. Medium finish . . . I'm gonna say hold for at least 2 more yrs. Great QPR at $12.

Stronger on the first day than the second. Being a 2006 the legs are thinning so same day consumption would be wise. Great taste, fruit forward, strong and memorable finish, big and well blended and drinking beautifully right now. Glad I purchased two cases from WTSO!

didn't quite click for me... seemed like an odd mix of high acid and ripe fruit with an artificial vanilla note in the background.. not bad, but not what I was expecting based on others notes here... perhaps an off bottle... will reserve judgement until my other bottle...
Medium weight and body. Lots of fruit, new world style. Ok wine, blends fine with food, but nothing special. Reminds me of the Ercavio several years ago that was very popular and received a 90 rating from WS. The 92 from WA is overrated. Fruit tastes more like a sophisticated and dense grape soda pop than what I would expect from a highly rated wine, but some may like this style. Got better with aeration and with food. 86 on its own and 88 with food.

Wow this is really good and genuinely Rioja. This wine genuinely excited me on the first sip, right out of the bottle (do not decant). Mixed berries on a medium body, with the typical Rioja oak/leather/vanilla notes. A hint of orange as the pro reviewers noted. Extremely smooth on the palate with a crazy, 30-second finish. How can a wine at this price point have that kind of finish? I have three more, but wish I had a case. 91-92.
Sweet blackberries, currant and a touch of leather and spice. Medium body with a bit of heat, but it's enjoyable because of the sweet fruit. Heat settled over the 2 hour consumption time. Acidity is low and the wine is drinking well. A bit of citrus and berry on the finish. For less than $12, a steal.

Complex aromatics showing blackberry, grilled steak, oak and earth. Drinking great now with flavors that match the nose. The oak influence is noticeable but balanced overall. Medium acid, medium integrated tannins and a fairly long finish. Fantastic for the WTSO price, don't hesitate to open a bottle now but it should last at least through its tenth birthday.

Fruktigt, medelfylligt och fin syra. Silkiga tanniner.

Deep ruby color. On PnP, it's got a fruity nose with cherry dominating. On the palate, I get less fruit than the nose would suggest but still some black cherry and blackberry, but what is really nice is the hint of leather and the soft tannins. Long finish with vanilla tones. I can't get to WA's 92, but it's well-balanced and a great deal at $12.

Very enjoyable, although nothing unique. That said, I can see WA's 92 rating given the beautiful balance, not overbearing but very lush. Gorgeous smokiness on the nose got my mind imagining this was going to open into something big in the mouth. That never happened. However, sipping on this I realized how beautifully understated this was, even elegant. The only thing missing was a notable/unique expressive flavor profile. That said, if I was a dinner guest and saw this on the table I would not be dissapointed. This is a midweek treat for about $15.

Drank after a bottle of prosecco. Decanted it and started drinking with dinner of pizza and wings after 15 minutes. It tasted sour as if it had turned. It open up after a while on the second glass. By the end of the bottle it had improved to the point that we'll try it again. We just got it from WTSO a few days before. Bottle shock maybe? I'll try another bottle in a few weeks and see what happens.

More time to take notes with this bottle than the previous one.
PnP. Garnet-purple color. Good clarity and legs. New leather and spice on the nose with a touch of fruit. Initial taste is red fruit, with moderate tannin and some bite. From experience I know this is still closed, so transferred the rest of the bottle to a decanter.
Second taste after ten minutes in decanter. Nose is a bit more intense and deeper, especially with darker spice – cinnamon and clove, with maybe a hint of anise? More leggy. Much more expressive in the mouth, with red fruits – cherries, raspberries, cranberries with a spice and leather undernote. Some decided bite and heat, and a decent amount of tannins. Partially integrated, but it seems to me there is some remaining. Based on what I am observing at this point I wouldn’t hesitate to sit this down for a few more years. But we’ll see if that opinion stands later on.
Still nursing the second pour and this is continuing to open up. The flavors are continuing to expand, and the components are integrating. The flavors persist through the palate, and the tannins and bite hang around for a long time. More bite now than previously. Very enjoyable.
Finishing the bottle two hours later. It has continued to open up. Still has some bite, and tannins continue to be present. Very nice now, and probably can be held for at least several more years. At $11.99 from WTSO this a great bargain.

Tasty and very enjoyable. Nice offering from this Rioja based producer. Blend of 80% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha and 15% Mazuelo and Mazuelo aged for 20 months in American oak.
Nice nose of dark fruit, which carried through front to back. Well rounded, not overly fruity and very pleasant to drink. Got a 92 from Neal Martin of WA in August of 2012. For $15, this is another example of the exceptional value that Spain offers.

PnVnD. About 30 minutes in decanter before consuming, Paired with shrimp, onion, and garlic enchiladas in green enchilada sauce.
Didn't make a lot of notes because we were too busy enjoying this splendid wine. Dark purple and semi-opaque. Both on the nose and in the palate this was a bit darker than most tempranillos; specs indicate this is 80% tempranillo blended with garnache, mazuelo (carignan), and graciano. Some forward fruit but not jammy; pretty much right to my tastes. Flavors hold on for quite awhile, and evolve. There's a decent amount of body behind the fruit, and some very well-integrated tannins that give very solid structure and depth. Dry, and with a dollop of heat and acidity.
This easily handled the enchiladas and then some. Probably at its peak right now. Rated very good (86-88). An outrageously good deal at ~$11/bottle.

Needs an hour to open up, nice cherry bouquet and lingering vanilla notes. I like this wine because its not too hot like so many of the moderately priced Spanish wines. Smooth texture /medium body so its drinkable in the summer months--great value here

Decanted for about 1/2 hour then drank before and with Delmonico steaks on the grill with grilled broccoli and corn on the cob. Started a little tart but soon opened up with more balance of fruit and acidity. Got better with time. Much better than the last bottle. Opened a second bottle and it was much the same.

Came across a little light this time. Decent balance, and a nice dry finish, but seemed to be lacking body. Still a great value at WTSO price though.

Big, buttery oak with cherries, bitter chocolate and milled lumber on the nose. Solid palate with balanced to fresh acidity and a long, toasty, buttery finish.
5/5

Levde verkligen inte upp till förväntningarna. Alldeles för mycket vanilj och dill, inte alls särskilt elegant.

where last bottle fell on the right side of the lush delicious vs overripe line..This bottle moves a little more towards the line.. some stewed plum...Still pretty tasty, and definitely well worth the $10 tariff ...but a little less than my last bottle. Curious how my remaining bottles will turn

Very ripe plum with some new oak, heat, and awkward lushness. Acceptable, but for me it's definitely a pass.

As before, with moderate length and good balance of acid and tannins. The cork looked bad with running to the top, but the wine seemed solid nonetheless with faint stewed fruit that seemed to blow off. 88-90

PnP, and had with pasta dinner. Wow!!! what a bargain. Immediately struck me how dark wine was in glass, Slightly sweet black cherry fruit wrapped in chocolate comes over in layered waves. Has enough acidity to not come across as flabby. Just a delicious drinking wine, and an outstanding QPR. Super super bargain at <$10, and a definite rebuy if I can find it anywhere near that price.

Deep purple with a red rim. Mint, plum, blackberry nose. Wish there was more there, though. Dusty on the palate with rich black cherry, blackberry flavors. Fuzzy tannins that don't overwhelm. Very nicely balanced by acidity. Finish is long and linear. Very nice for $12.
color 5/5
nose 7/10
taste 16/20

Wow....great sweet blackberries, currant and a touch of leather and spice. Light body with a bit of heat, but it's enjoyable because of the sweet fruit. Acidity is very nice and the wine is balanced right now. A bit of citrus and berry on the finish. For less than $12, a super steal.
